    Marion together with her family took part in homesteading the Northwest Territories as part of a large exudus of families from the Lanark County area of Ontario. These homesteaders banded together in loose family groups or "clans" with a similar history such as decendents Scottish setlers. In Marion and Hugh's case they made three attemtps to homestead in the Prairies with trips back to Ramsay Township between each attempt.

    Marion and Hugh's first attempt to homestead in the 1870s was in an area that is close to the present town of Emerson, Manitoba. Their second attempt was near Pilot Mound, Manitoba which was done together with members of the Heatherington family from Ramsay Twp, Ontario. Then in 1882 Marion, Hugh and some of their children homesteaded in the Armstrong Lake area in the Northwest Territories. Initially they homesteaded together with Marion's sister Jane and her family and were later joined by Marion's youngest brother Duncan. At that time the railhead of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was at Whitewood and the family group had to 'trek' north to the area near the York Colony.

    The orgiinal settlement at Armstrong Lake (Lakes) was renamed Rokeby when the CPR tracks on the northern spur line was extended from Saltcoats to Yorkton, NWT and the CPR arbitarily named the station Rokeby rather than the name of the settlement i.e. Armstrong Lake. (The present city of Yorkton is located just to the south of the old settlement of York Colony or Yorktown)

    While Hugh was away serving with the militia, Marion was able to prove up the homestead which she named Rosemount and ran the farm when her husband returned home wounded. Initially Marion and her family lived in soddies but with time hauled logs in to build a log house. Then Marion was one of the first in Saskatchewan to order a prefabricated frame house from British Columbia that was shipped to Rokeby in a boxcar and assembled on the farm. This frame house is still in use as the family home.

    Marion returned to Almonte, Ontario for the 1905 Reunion when many family members reunited for a short while.

    ?b?SYME -?/b?- In Ramsay Township, on Tuesday evening, Sept. 27th, 1949, Jessie J. Lockhart, widow of James G. Syme, in her 92nd year. The funeral will take place from the residence of her son, Mr. Herbert A. Syme, 10th concession of Ramsay, where service will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in the Auld Kirk Cemetery.

    The funeral of Mrs James Syme was held Friday afternoon from the residence of her son, Hubert A. Syme, Ramsay Township, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery for interment. The service was conducted by Rev. James Foote, of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Carleton Place and Rev. H.L. Morrison, of Almonte. Mrs Syme died at her home in Appleton on September 27. She was 91 years of age. The former Jessie Jane Lockhart, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Lockhart and his wife, Marion Fumerton, and was born in Ramsay. She was educated there and was married to Mr. Syme at Almonte. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary 17 years ago last May. He died about 17 years ago in January. Mrs Syme attended St. Andrew's Church, Carleton Place, and had been a member of the Women's Missionary Society and the Ladies' Aid. Survivors include two sons, Peter T., of Vancouver, and Hubert A., Ramsay; one daughter, Mrs Lou Persman, St. Claire, Mich: eight grandsons and granddaughters, Orville and Nelson, at home: Dorothy, Mrs. Hallet, Edmonton; Ena, Mrs A. Stark, Ottawa; Gladys, Viking, Alta; Ross and Donald Vancouver; Lorne, Camp Borden; also one brother, Alfred P. Lockhart, Rokeby, Sask. The pall-bearers were Ed. Dowdall, Joseph Symington, John Struthers, James Turner, Hubert Fee and Frank Paul. Many beautiful floral tributes were received.

    ALMONTE, March 31. Mr. David J. Lockhart, second son of the late Hugh Lockhart, formerly of Almonte, passed away at his home in Rokeby. Sask. He was born on June 23, 1862. He was married to Miss Sarah Amelia Fea. formerly of Rokeby, Sask. To them one child was born, Irene Myria, who died, aged eight months. He had four sisters, four brothers: (Jessie) Mrs. Jas.     The death occurred on Thursday, August 25th of Lois Mildred Syme, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Hubert Syme of Appleton. The little girl, aged four years and eight months had never been very strong but had shown marked improvement this summer thus raising the hopes of her fond parents that she would eventually be quite well. But she was seized with sudden illness and in spite of all that could be done for her passed away in a little over an hour. She leaves to mourn her the parents and three brothers, Orville, Nelson and Milburn. The funeral which was largely attended, took place on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock from the residence of the grandparents Mr and Mrs Jas Syme, 11th line of Ramsay, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev Mr McLellan, pastor of Bethany Church, Almonte, conducted services at the house and grave. The sympathy of friends and neighbours for the bereaved parents was shown in many ways. The pallbearers were Clarence Dowdall, Roy Low, Willard Aitken, and Vincent O'Brien. Among the floral tributes were the following:?     The entire community has been greatly stirred by the very sudden death of little Millburn Syme, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Hubert Syme on Sunday morning. The winsome little chap who was between two and three years of age, was taken ill on Thursday afternoon. Although medical aid was called in that evening, nothing seemed to afford him any relief and he passed away on Sunday morning. This event is the more sad because Mr and Mrs Syme buried their only daughter who died after a few hours' illness a few months ago. making the third funeral from that home in the last six months. Besides the parents and grandmother, two brothers Orville and Nelson are left to mourn the passing of their little playmate. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The officiating clergymen were, Rev Jas Foote, St Andrew's, Carleton Place; and Rev A. McLauchlin of Trinity, Almonte and Appleton. The pallbearers were young boys of the section, Bernard Pye, Arthur Fee, Miller Struthers and Alec Stewart. We extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved parents. We regret to record that Mrs Proctor of the 9th line, maternal grandmother of little Milburn Syme is confined to her bed with sciatica.
