    Retired physicist Robert N. Wolfe, 79, a retired research physicist for Eastman Kodak Co., died of a heart attack at home Dec. 11. Mr. Wolfe was born in Falls City, Neb., and in 1930 graduated from Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. From 1930-35 he attended the University of Rochester where he received his master's and doctorate degrees in physics. He was selected for membership in Sigma Xi, a national scientific honor society. Mr. Wolfe joined Kodak as a physicist in 1935 and worked in their research laboratory for 38 years. He retired as senior research associate in 1973. For 20 years Mr. Wolfe worked in the field of photographic sensi-tometry, improving the sensitivity of film, especially with the use of filters and more efficient light sources. Mr. Wolfe studied the way light is scattered by turbidity, as it is inside the light-sensitive coating on photographic film, and thereby distorting an otherwise crisp photograph. He also designed high-efficiency viewing screens for both front and rear slide and movie R.N. Wolfe dies projection. Mr. Wolfe was frequently called on by astronomers and scientists around the country involved with photographing and mapping the spectrum, to help solve problems that arose with their photographic systems. He also contributed many papers to scientific journals and was a fellow of the Optical Society of America. He is listed in American Men of Science and Who's Who in the East. In addition to his scientific career, Mr. Wolfe was socially active through work in his church and the community. He was a member for more than 50 years of the Downtown Presbyterian Church. He served as a deacon, elder and leader in their social action work. He was a founding member of the Friends of Fight, which became Metro-Act. Mr. Wolfe is survived by his wife, Ruth C. Wolfe; a son, Alan Wolfe; a daughter, Judith W. Mark; a brother, Laurence Wolfe, of Fairfield, Iowa; a sister, Elizabeth Seath, of Lexington, Ky.; and four grandchildren. Ben Loudon
