    Birth:
Story in the Almonte Gazette, 1897, speaking of the Durham boats which brought the settlers up the St Lawrence. "As these uncouth craft are crawling cannily by the swirling waters of the Long Sault Rapids, there is observed an unusual commotion among the passengers. There is a hurried landing from one of the boats, and, by-and-by, the wail of a new born infant. Thus is born to Mr and Mrs Johnston a daughter - Janet, now Mrs James Black. The Durham boats landed the party at Prescott, whence it proceeded by wagon to Perth and on to Lanark Village. here scows were built to carry the settlers and their effects down the Clyde and the Mississippi to Ramsay.

    Died:
1916, Friday March 17, The Almonte Gazette, page 4
    Obit. ? Mrs James Black
Almost twenty years ago the Gazette published a sketch of two of Ramsay township's earliest settlers and most respected residents. In that sketch, descriptive of the experiences of a party of settlers who had left Scotland to make their homes in Canada, and who were coming up the St. Lawrence in Durham boats, the following sentence appeared: "There is a hurried landing from one of the boats, and by-and-bye, the wail of a new-born infant. Thus is born to Mr and Mrs James Johnston, a daughter ? Janet, now Mrs James Black." A few years later then the sketch Mr Black was called away, and now Mrs Black has reached the home for which she so long and earnestly looked. The year of her birth was 1821, and in her death at 94 years of age, one of the oldest residents of Ramsay township has passed to the great beyond. She was a daughter of the late Jas, Johnston, R.N., a veteran of the wars with Napoleon. She was married to Mr Back in 1844, and to them eleven were born, four of whom survive. These are Mrs C.W. Gilmour (Margaret), Braeside; Mrs A.A. Steele (Agnes), Steelton, Sask.; Robt, fifth line Ramsay, William H., at Morrisburg. For about six years the late Mrs Black was a patient in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, helpless from a broken limb, but possessing all her mental faculties to the end. She was a woman of exalted Christian character and remarkably patient and cheerful disposition. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon from the Presbyterian manse to the eighth line cemetery vault, and was attended by many from Ramsay and Almonte

    Died.
At his father's residence, in Ramsay, on the 8th inst- Mr. Chas. A. Black, in the twenty-fifth year of his age. The early death of this young man leaves a blank in a wide social circle in which he was deservedly respected. The deceased was the third son of James Black, Esq., Deputy Reeve of Ramsay, and Jeannette, his wife. Early in life he entered upon mercantile pursuits in the service of Mr. Jas. Reeves, in Eganville, and after a two years stay there entered the employ of Mr. J. H. Wylie, of this village, where he continued until failing health compelled him to withdraw. His attention to business and his employer's interests opened to him the highest position in the establishment, while his uniform courtesy, and desire to please, won for him the respect of a large circle of friends. For some time it has been evident that he was passing away from earth, all human remedies proving futile to arrest the progress of disease. He possessed his consciousness to the last and gave evidence that his affliction had been sanctified; "Jesus is precious." being amongst his last utterances. The very large concourse of people attending the funeral on Wednesday last proved the estimation in which the family in general and the deceased in particular was held.
He is gone from all he loved on earth
To him who died our souls to save
'Tis but the form of him we loved
That rests within the silent grave.

    W.H. Black Was Popular Figure
Former Almonte School Teacher Great Favourite With His Old Pupils
Following a lengthy period of illness, the death occurred in Toronto on Thursday, Feb 10th of Mr. William Hamilton Black, a former well-known resident of Almonte. He was born on the 7th line of Ramsay, 86 years ago, a son of the late James Black and his wife Janet Johnstone. Mr Black attended the local schools and while a young man went to the American West where he spent several years. He worked as a carpenter in the States of Utah, Colorado and California in the days when pioneer conditions existed and when the advice of Horace Greeley was being followed ? "Go West, young man and seek that better land." When he was in a reminiscent mood Mr Black sometimes talked of his experiences on the Western coast. While discussing newspaper work he once dropped the information that he was employed in the circulation department of the San Francisco Argonaut for a time.
    Becomes A Teacher.
Returning to his own country. Mr Black resumed his academic studies graduating from the Ottawa Normal as a teacher. He had been a brilliant pupil at the Almonte High School standing High in the estimation of the late P.C. McGregor for that reason. Under these circumstances it was not surprising that he himself proved a most successful educationist. He taught in many places generally in the capacity of principal. Among these might be mentioned Arnprior, Pakenham, Whitby, Carleton Place, Marmora and Almonte. He was principal of the public school here for some years and is remembered affectionately by his old pupils as one who mingled kindness and humour with that degree of discipline necessary to succeed in the profession of his adoption. When Mr Black retired as headmaster of the local school he was appointed secretary of the Public Utilities Commission of Almonte, a position he filled with the upmost satisfaction up to some ten years ago when he retired and made his home in Toronto where his son Eric resided. Aside from his work he had many interest during his long life in this town. He was a great reader of good books and he liked to discuss public affairs. His ideas on such subjects were reflected in letter which he sent to the press. Many of them appeared in the Gazette and were written in the style of essays. They were read with great interest and especially by those who were personally acquainted with their author.
    A Faithful Churchman.
A faithful and active churchman, Mr Black, a former Presbyterian, transferred to the United Church at the time of Union and worshipped with the Bethany congregation up to the time of his departure from Almonte. He served for years as clerk of the session and in other capacities on church organizations. For a time he also discharged the onerous duties of committee secretary in connection with the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Mr Black took a great interest in this last mentioned institution and on one occasion wrote an excellent history of this pioneer burying ground going to the personal expense of buying engravings to reproduce printed pictures of the new McLeod memorial entrance, the old church and other scenes. Among his donations to Bethany Church, outside of his liberal monetary contributions, was a fine brass name plate to be seen on the front of the building and a handsome pulpit lamp. After he left Almonte to live in Toronto, Mr Black kept in touch with his old friends through letters and occasional visits. He was always a cheerful conversationalist and people liked to see him back in the old town. For some years before he left he lived at the Hotel Almonte where he was a favourite with the proprietor, Mr Charles Tallon, the staff, other boarders and the travelling public. Shortly after the turn of the century Mr Black lost his wife, the former Anna Greig of Almonte. There was one son and one daughter, Eric Black who survives, and Marion, a clever young lady who died in a tragic level crossing accident about twelve years ago. This was a terrible blow to the father and it is doubtful if he ever fully recovered from it. There were nine members in Mr Black's family. Five brothers and three sisters predeceased him. They were: Walter, James, Gilbert, Robert and Charles; Margaret (Mrs A. Gilmour); Jessie and Agnes (Mrs E. Steele). The remains were brought to Almonte Saturday morning and deposited in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The body was expected to arrive on the Pembroke local and a number of old friends had assembled at the station to pay a last tribute to the departed. It developed, however, that the train from Toronto to Ottawa had been late and the local did not wait for it. The remains were sent to Carleton Place on the pool train which leaves Ottawa shortly after the local and they were conveyed by motor hearse from that town to the cemetery, A service was conducted by Rev W. J. Scott of Bethany Church and the following acted as pallbearers: Messrs. J.B. Illingworth, L.B. Jamieson, Ed James, W.A. Metcalfe, N.S. Lee and W.C. Pollock. Out-of-town friends present for Mr Black funeral were: Mrs Marion and Mr Maurice McFarlane of Ottawa; Mrs May Colborne of Ottawa; Mrs R. Tomilson and Mr Charles Gilmour of Braeside. All above are nieces and nephews of deceased.

William married Annie Mclaurin Greig in 1891. Annie (daughter of James Fortune Greig and Elizabeth "Belle" Campbell) was born on 28 Mar 1864 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 23 Dec 1906 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Mysterious Disappearance ? A Boy Apparently Drowned
The people of Almonte were greatly excited and much sympathy was evoked for Mrs Kate Black on Saturday evening last when it became known that her only child, little Gilbert Black, nearly six years old, was missing, with indications that he was drowned. Mrs Black, being busy in her shop down town, had not seen her son since early in the forenoon, but, as this was frequently the case, she was not alarmed, thinking he was at Mr Ragdale's, on Church street, where they boarded, Early in the afternoon, she began to make inquiries, and asked Chief Lowry to keep a lookout for Gilbert on his rounds. Late in the afternoon some boys rowing a boat on the Bay found a boy's cap floating on the surface of the water one hundred yards or so from the Bay Hill road. Mr Ragdale identified it as the one worn by the missing boy, and at once the greatest alarm was felt. The little fellow had ben in the habit of playing by himself, and was known to be afraid of the water, but there seems little doubt from what can be learned that he was playing on the bank of the river near Mr Cannon's mill on the shore of the bay, as well as just above the flume at a dangerous point near the old electric light house opposite the mills of the Almonte Knitting Co., (and some say on the steep embankment at the rear of Mr T. Ringrose's shoeshop) and was throwing stones into the raging rapids there. This was about 11:30 a.m. After that hour no trace whatever can be fond of his movements. Without alarming the mother when the cap was found, searching parties were at once organized and a thorough patrol of the river banks and the river itself was made. The was kept up far into the night, and all day Sunday twenty-five or more boats, well-manned and equipped with grappling irons, kept up the search, without the slightest encouragements. The water at the flume was shut off, but without avail. On Monday Mr J.B. Wylie sent to Carleton Place for a quantity of dynamite, and about a dozen shots where put off in several parts of the bay, without effects, On Monday evening an informal meeting of about fifty citizens was held in the office of Messrs Wylie and Shaw, when the council was requested to place on the river four boats manned each by two men to continue the search, and Mr James Metcalf was sworn in as special constable to direct their movements. The search was kept up diligently on Tuesday and Wednesday, and on Wednesday night another meeting was held, when arrangements were made to keep up the search for the rest of the week by both volunteered and paid help. It was further resolved to sent to Montreal or Ottawa for a searchlight. Owing to the belied of some that the missing boy had wandered to Col Gemmill's bush near the Bay Hill, a large searching party was organized on Wednesday and made a thorough search, but without result. As usual, a number of exaggerated reports got into circulation, but on being traced to their source they were proven foundation-less. Two booms have been stretched across the river, one at "Brown's Clearing," a mile down from town, and the other at Rosebank, in order to stop the body from passing down, acting on the belief that the body is in the river, of which there is little doubt. Word was also sent to people along the river all the way to Pakenham to be on the lookout for the body; but the belief of many in that owning to the coldness of the water, the body may not rise for some time. The deepest sorrow is felt for Mrs Black, and any fate for her little boy, is positively known, would not be so painful as the terrible suspense, through which she is passing. He was the only solace left her at the time of her husband's death.

1898, Friday April 22, The Almonte Gazette front page
    Found in the Bay
The diligent search for the body of little Gilbert Black, who disappeared on Saturday, 9th inst., and who, it was generally believed had been drowned, was kept up all last week, and on Sunday forenoon was rewarded by the finding of the body by Messrs. Ted Boothroyd and Elmo Moreau in about thirty feet of water close to the west shore of the river near the residence of Mr E. Edmonds, and a few yards from where the boy's cap was found. The place had been dragged over a hundred times before by the searchers, but as the body was imbedded in a large mass of sawdust, the hooks had failed to catch on to the clothing. The fact that deceased had been seen on the high bank behind Mr T. Ringrose shoe shop, and that when found there were two cuts on the head, leads many to believe that the little fellow in his childish play had fallen off the bank and was probably stunned before he reached the water, and was carried down the rapids and across the bay; but all is mere conjecture. Undertaker Donaldson, after preparing the body, which was well preserved took it to the residence of Mr Ragsdale, where Mrs Black was staying, and the number of people who called during Sunday and Monday testified to the deep sympathy felt for the bereaved mother, thus deprived of her only child. The sympathy of the community was still further manifested by the very large attendance at the funeral, which took place on Monday at 3 p.m., to St. Paul's church, where the beautiful burial service of the Church of England was conducted by Rev Canon Low, assisted by Rev C. Saddington, of Richmond; thence to the 8th line cemetery.

    ?b?John Arthur Steele Passes?/b?
After funeral services in Ottawa, John Arthur Steele (Art) was interred at the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte, September 4th. Mr Steele was born in 1894 on the Steele Century Farm, 8th line, Ramsay Township, the son of John Steele and Amy Coulter, and grandson of a Scot who came to Ramsay in the 1820's. Mr Steele always had great affection for Almonte and its people. Mr Steele leaves his wife, Laura McGregor, formerly of Pakenham; five daughters, Aileen, Amy (Mrs Robert Kempster) and Patricia, all of Ottawa; Joan (Mrs Humfry Peake), of England; Dr Marion Steele of Guelph; a son, Dr John Steele of Ottawa; two sisters, Louise of Cobourg and Beth (Mrs Hal Kirkland) of Almonte; a brother, Ernest of Toronto. He was predeceased by a sister, May and brothers Alex and James. After graduating from Almonte High School he entered the Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph. He, together with his comrade, the late Hal Kirkland, enlisted in the First University Corps which in July 1915 reinforced the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. After the war, he again attended the O.A.C.; later at Iowa State College he received his M.Sc. In 1920 Mr Steele joined the staff of the Soldier Settlement Board, working in British Columbia and Alberta. Later he served as a dairy promoter in Ontario and organized cow testing associations in Quebec. In 1925 he joined the livestock branch of the Canadian Department of Agriculture as a livestock fieldman for Nova Scotia. He is fondly remembered by many farmers and former Calf Club members there, where he introduced such then-new procedures as artificial insemination. In 1946 he returned to the Ottawa Valley on his appointment as assistant chief registration officer. In 1960 when he retired he was head of the Record of Performance, cattle section, of the livestock division. After his retirement he contributed articles to the Family Herald and other farm journals commenting on such subjects as the valuation system for farm price of milk. Mr Steele was a member of the Mason, the Canadian Legion, the Agricultural Institute of Canada and the O.A.C. Alumni. From the O.A.C. year book of 1920, the following quotation reveals aspects of Art which endeared him to so many: "In the spring of 1915 he took a trip to the Old Country with the P.P.C.L.I. serving with them until demobilized in 1919. While in France his thoughts wandered back to the old orchard on the farm upon seeing a pear tree some short distance from the trenches, and his fondness for pears was responsible for him being the object of an enemy sniper. However, Art got the pears and cheated the sniper of the coveted notch in he but of his rifle. Later, however, he selected an enemy bullet more to his liking and took a trip to the hospital areas. While convalescing, Paris claimed his attention and by the time he returned to his unit he could say, "Oui, la la." At the college many humourous sayings have originated in Art's cortex. He hold the record for breaking chemical apparatus, his bank account and monotony. To art all life's troubles are soluble in a grin and we expect to find him growing two turnips where one grew before, when he returns to agricultural life."

John married Laura Isabelle McGregor in 1927. Laura (daughter of Alexander S. McGregor and Martha Martin) was born on 21 Jan 1898 in Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 16 Jul 1982 in Ottawa, Ottawa Municipality, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. James H. Steele Dies Suddenly
Residents of Almonte and the surrounding farming community were saddened to learn of the sudden passing of James Harold Steele of the 8th line of Ramsay, on the morning of Friday, May 24th. Mr. Steele had gone to the mailbox about 10 a.m., when he was apparently stricken with a heart attack . He was in his 78th year. Mr. Steele was born on the 8th line of Ramsay, on April 26, 1897, a son of the late John Steele and his wife, Amy Coulter. Raised on one of Ramsay's pioneer farms in a family of brothers and sisters who chose a wide variety of careers, Jimmie, as he was affectionately known in his community, modestly referred to himself as a "tiller of the soil." It was his love of the land, his great knowledge of agricultural production and his ability to recognize and adapt to modern tillage methods, new strains and varieties of crops that enabled him to establish a reputation of being an outstanding agriculturist. Jimmie in his own quiet way was always prepared to share his experience, his knowledge and his energies with his friends and neighbours and help them in this way to share the success he realized in his own chosen career. In fraternal circle he was a member of Mississippi Lodge No. 147, A.F. and AM., Almonte, and was a Toronto Shriner. A Masonic service was held Saturday evening at 7.30 p.m. at the funeral home. Died:
2014, Saturday June 14, The Toronto Star
KIRKLAND, John "Jack" Steele, QC - On Saturday, June 7, 2014 in his 78th year, surrounded by his family, Jack left the world as he had lived his life: with courage and dignity. Predeceased by his parents, Hal and Beth (Steele); his infant son, John; and his precious son, Joseph (2006). He will be forever missed by his loving and cherished wife, Beverley; his adoring children, Jimmy (Crystal Lemay), Mary, Catherine (Christopher Newton) and Jacqueline (Gene Bruce); his beautiful grandchildren, Alexa, Leah, Olivia, Madeline, Adam, Jackson, Clara, Clayton, Celeste and Atley; his devoted brother, James T. Kirkland of Toronto; his daughters-in-law, Louise Kirkland and Lisa Giffin; special family friend, Freddy Laphen; and his many wonderful friends and colleagues. Jack practiced law in Smiths Falls for 54 years. He went to work until his body could no longer take him there three weeks ago. He was the consummate small town lawyer - he did a little bit of everything, but he flourished in criminal law because he loved the drama of the courtroom. The law was his calling as he was a keen observer of the human condition and fierce defender of the underdog. He will be sorely missed by the many people whose lives he touched. Honouring Jack's request, there will be a private family celebration of his life and no visitation or funeral.

Jack married Beverley K. Fraser in 1962. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Obituary?tab?WILLIAM ROBERT DUNCAN APRIL 4, 1944-APRIL 7, 2010 Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind; Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave. It is with sadness, but relief that Bill's fight with cancer came to a peaceful end on Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Predeceased by his father Willis Duncan ( 1998) and his mother Grace Duncan (2004), Bill leaves to remember all the good times his wife Eleanor, his son Chad (Christina) and granddaughters Kimberly and Jessie; daughters Marquita (Grant) and Jana (Tim) ; and stepson Trevor Gates (Sonia) and grandson Atticus. Bill is also survived by his sister Carole Splett (Ed), brother Doug, father-in-law Paul Desjardins (Barbara), sisters-in-law Marie and Cindy (Gary), and brother-in-law Wil Desjardins (Rhonda), as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Most of Bill's life was spent in Regina; he attended the University of Regina for his Bachelor of Arts degree, as well as his Bachelor of Administration. Although Bill was tempted to pursue a career in science, he opted for economics and had a long and successful career as a civil servant, retiring as Director of Finance for Social Services in 2004. Bill's interests were many, including astronomy, rock formations, nature, history, genealogy, creating home videos, downhill skiing, ballroom dancing, golf and travel. Bill loved the Rocky Mountains camp trips when his children were young, downhill skiing and more recently hiking at Jasper. He also enjoyed spending time at the cottage on Pasqua Lake where, under protest, he would help Eleanor with one of her many projects. Last April's hot air balloon ride over the rock formations in Cappadocia, Turkey was a highlight of Bill's travel experiences. A Celebration of Bill's Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 12, 2010 in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina. Flowers gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, memory gifts may be made to the World Wildlife FundCanada (wwf.ca/donations) or Willi...
