Last Thursday evening Mrs John McIntyre, of Ramsay, who was 74 years of age, went over to spend the evening with Mrs C. Wallace, a neighbour, apparently in her usual health. A few hours later she took a weak turn, and passed away early Friday morning. The deceased lady, whose maiden name was Frances Lang, of Beckwith, was a sister of Mr. Wm. Lang, and was well known throughout the district, having resided hereabouts most all her life. The funeral took place on Sunday, to 8th line cemetery, and was very largely attended, some 75 carriages being in the procession.

Very Sudden Death
Last Monday Mr. John Lang, whose farm adjoins Almonte, was working about his home, in better health than usual, as he had been suffering for a time from rheumatism and a slight trouble of the heart, and when Mrs Lang went to bed at ten o'clock that night she left him reading beside the stove, as he intended removing the ashes before retiring. Mrs Lang awoke between two and three next morning, and finding that her husband was not abed, divined that something was wrong. Hurrying down, she found Mr. Lang in a kneeling position beside the stove ? dead! He had been fixing the stove and before his task was competed the hand to death was upon him. Heart disease was doubtless the cause. The news was a terrible shock to the household, and scarcely less so to many in town, who ha the pleasure of meeting Mr Lang here the previous Friday, about as genial as ever, though bearing traces of his sickness. Deceased was one of Ramsay's best known and most respected farmers, and his death is regretted by all who knew him. An upright, honourable citizen, a kind friend and neighbour, and a model in his domestic relationships, has gone to his rest, and leaves a home in the deepest sorrow; but the household does not sorrow as those who are without hope ? they have the blessed assurance that they well meet again under brighter skies. Sixty-five years ago Mr. Lang was born on the farm in which he died, his father being the late Arthur Lang, who came from Scotland to these parts in 1821, with the first settlers. Over forty years ago he married Jane Gilmour, daughter of the late James Gilmour, who was also one of the pioneer settlers. Of their children four survive, viz.: Henry and Alvina at home; Mrs Throop (Jessie), of Ottawa; Albert A., who is studying medicine at McGill College, Montreal. To add to the misfortunes of the family, Mrs Lang has been ill of late with pleurisy, and her son Albert is in an hospital at Montreal very seriously ill with typhoid. In their time of trouble Mrs Lang and family have the sincere sympathy of the whole community. Mr Lang was a charter member of Mississippi Lodge No 147 A.F. & A.M., Almonte, and the members of that lodge turned out in a body to attend the funeral which took place this (Thursday) afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery and was very largely attended. Rev A.S. Grant, B.D., pastor of St. Andrew's congregation (of which deceased was a member), was the officiating clergyman.

Died:
Businessman (ice cream and chocolate). William Neilson was born near Almonte, Ontario, but left his family's farm to earn a living. Stops in Rochester, Almonte and Toronto proved generally unsuccessful, forcing Neilson to join a brother in North Dakota until he could regain his financial footing. His break came through the production of ice cream in Toronto; first as a sideline to his grocery and then as his primary business in 1893. The firm branched into the production of confectionery in 1908. Chocolate bars followed soon afterward to further diversify the product line. William Neilson suffered a stroke while visiting Almonte in December 1914. A month later he stumbled in the company's Gladstone Ave. factory and, while recovering from that injury, suffered a second stroke, from which he finally succumbed. While William Neilson passed away in Toronto, the firm being his name went from supplying trans-Atlantic luxury liners to being the largest manufacturer of ice cream in the British Empire. The company continues as a dairy operation, having sold the ice cream business in 1990 and the confectionery line in 1996.

On Monday of last week Mr Arthur McIntyre of Ramsay was at the Telephone Co's. meeting, one of the interested shareholders; on Wednesday he was taken ill, and on Monday of this week he passed away from heart failure. His mother was a sister of the Langs ? James, Alex , and others. He was born on the farm on the 7th line of Ramsay, upon which he spent his entire life of 62 years. His wife died two years ago, but two daughters, Frances and Amelia aged 19 and 16 years respectively, are still living. There are also two sisters, Mrs J. Dunlop of Pakenham and Mrs Publow of Pilot Mound, Man. The funeral took place on Wednesday to the eighth line cemetery, and was a fitting tribute to the memory of one of the most respected citizens Ramsay township has ever lost. Quiet and retiring in disposition, yet he was possessed of a warm heart, a sterling character, and a reputation for honesty and probity that was an open sesame to all doors whether as a friend, a neighbour or advisor. He was a member of St. Andrew's church, Carleton Place, and the pastor Rev Mr Monds, officiated at the funeral.

The Late Arthur Lockhart
Following a lengthened illness the death occurred on Monday of this week of Arthur Lockhart, in his 68th year. He was born in Almonte and lived his whole life here. His wife, who is still living, was Miss Margaret Cowie, and with her are left to mourn seven sons. These are Messrs Walter, William, Harry and Attie, of Almonte; John and Herb, of Ottawa; and Robert of Smiths Falls. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from his residence on Ottawa street to the eighth line cemetery, Rev S.G. Brown conducting the services at the house and grave. The pallbearers were six sons of deceased.

The doctors decided that a further operation was unnecessary. Miss Lang was made comfortable, and was progressing quite favourably until Tuesday forenoon, when she began to sink.

Miss Lang's Sudden Death
Residents of this neighbourhood were shocked on Tuesday afternoon to learn of the death, in St Luke's Hospital, Ottawa, that day, of Margaret Alvina Lang, daughter of Mrs John Lang, Ramsay ? familiarly known as "Vinie." Deceased , who was 29 years old, was a pleasant-faced and pleasant-mannered lady, clever and popular, and the sudden ending of so useful a life has evoked the warmest expressions of sympathy with the doubly bereaved family, who have found of late years that misfortunes have come upon them in battalions. Miss Lang had been ill for some time, and latterly her trouble was diagnosed as an internal tumour. Hutcheon, M.A., of whose congregation deceased was a member, officiated. Miss Lang was a member of Atthewell Lodge No 29, Daughters of Rebekah, Almonte, and the members of that order attended the funeral in abody and conducted their impressive burial service.

Mrs Jas Bennett Granddaughter Of Almonte's First Teacher.?/b?
The funeral was held last Saturday afternoon, April 19th of Margaret Esdow Bennett, widow of the late James Bennett, from the home of Mr and Mrs Jos Gibbons, Wilkinson Street, where she had resided since the death of her husband 12 years ago. Services were conducted by Rev Wm Aird of the Baptist church of which deceased had been a member during her lifetime. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs Joseph Brooks, Jos Gibbons, Wm McCallum, James Barbour, Roy Thompson and James F. Patterson. Mrs Bennett, who was 86 years of age, had been in failing health for a number of years and death was hastened by injuries sustained in a fall some six weeks ago. She died on Thursday, April 17th. The late Mrs Bennett was born in Almonte a daughter of the late Alexander Lang and Janet Smith. She was a granddaughter of Arthur Lang, Almonte's first school master, who came to this part of the country in 1820. In 1885 she married James Bennett, who was an overseer in the plant of the Rosamond Woolen Co. for 50 years. She was the oldest member of the local Baptist congregation and of the Almonte Branch of the Women's Institute of which she was honourary president. She is survived by two nieces and two nephews. Among those attending the funeral from a distance were a niece, Miss Grace Cockroft, professor of history, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; Mrs Gordon Schultz, Westmeath, Ont, and Mrs Lorraine Desjardins, of Pembroke

The death occurred in new York City on Monday, August 29th, of Miss Mary Elizabeth Lang. She was born in Almonte on May 12th, 1870, a daughter of the late Alexander and Janet (Smith) Lang. Educated in the local schools she trained for a nurse in Paterson, N.J. and for the last 40 years had been a resident of New York city. She is survived by a sister, Mrs James Bennett of Almonte The remains arrived in Almonte, on Wednesday, accompanied by a nephew Mr Ralph H Cockroft of Woonsocket, R.I. Interment was made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery this Thursday afternoon, a service at the graveside being conducted by Rev William Aird, pastor of Almonte Baptist Church. Old Almonte friends were in attendance as well as Mr and Mrs Herb Smart and Mr and Mrs Asa Smith of Renfrew.

? Word was received here this week of the death of Mrs R. Bruce, which took place on Sunday evening at Rochester, N.Y., where she had gone for medical treatment for an internal trouble from which she was suffering. In the early stages of the treatment hopes were entertained of her early recovery, but the tax on her strength was greater then she could bear. About two weeks ago word came that she was growing weaker, and her sister, Miss Millie Lang, with her little daughter, Flossie, went to Rochester, and were with her till death ended her sufferings. The funeral took place on Wednesday at Rochester, Her husband and child survive. Mrs Bruce will be remembered by many for her bright and cheerful nature, and her readiness to give aid and encouragement to those who were in need when it was in her power to do so.

Mrs Agnes Hamilton
Attended by many friends from Ottawa and outside points the funeral of Mrs Agnes Hamilton was held from her home, 129 Waverley street, Ottawa, Saturday afternoon. The service was conducted by Rev Dr John W. Woodside, of Chalmers United Church and following the service was made at Almonte. The service at Almonte was conducted by Rev James Blanchard, of Trinity United Church, in the place of Rev John R. MacCrimmon, who was to have officiated. Rev Mr MacCrimmon's mother, Mrs Isobel MacCrimmon died suddenly Saturday morning. Among the many beautiful floral tributes received were those from Charles Ogilvy Limited; John M. Garland and Sons; Timber and Grazing Land Branch, Department of the Interior. The chief mourners were four sons, T.L. and W.G. Hamilton, Ottawa; J.G. Hamilton, Toronto, and J.H. Hannah Frances Cooke, Lanark Lodge, Perth , died in hospital at Perth , Ontario , Friday, Feb. 3, 1978, age 83 after a short illness. Born in Ramsay Township August 24, 1894, Mrs. Cooke was a daughter of the late Arthur McIntyre and his wife, Mary Jane Price. Mrs. Cooke was a graduate of Carleton Place High School, Ottawa Normal School and the University of Guelph . Married to the late Edward Chamney Cooke in 1927 at Carleton Place, Mrs. Cooke taught in the Carleton Place area until her retirement in 1956. She was a member of Rocky Ridge Women's Institute for many years and a member of Zion-Memorial United Church . Mrs. Cooke is survived by her only daughter, Mary Stedman, and two grandchildren, Bruce and Brian Stedman, Don Mills, Ontario . She was predeceased in 1958 by her sister, Amelia (McIntyre) Driskell, Midland , Michigan . The funeral service took place, Sunday, Feb. 5, 1978 , at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Barker Funeral Home, Carleton Place, with Rev. Kenneth J. Murray officiating. The Committal service took place in the chapel and interment will take place in the spring in Boyd's United Cemetery.

Margaret Cowie married Arthur Lockhart September 4th, 1873 at Almonte and Walter is found with them on the 1881-1901 Censuses and with his widowed mother on the 1921 Census. He is found again at Almonte on an 1935 voter's list working as a painter. He is recorded on an 1955 voter's list as an inmate at the House of Industry and Elmwood Burial records record his death there on December 11th.

Mr J.W. Lockhart
The remains of the late J.W. Lockhart of Ottawa, were conveyed to Almonte, this afternoon, by motor hearse and interment was made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Born and educated in Almonte, He was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Arthur Lockhart of Almonte. Going to Ottawa, after living for most of his life in Almonte, he entered the decorating business and became well known there. Surviving in addition to his widow, are six brothers, Walter, William and Arthur of Almonte; Harold of Carleton Place; Herbert of Ottawa and Robert of Montreal. The funeral service was held at the residence of his brother-in-law, J.A. McLachlin, 380 Cooper street, this Thursday afternoon, at one o'clock, after which the body was conveyed to Almonte, accompanied by mourners from the Capital.

Wm. E. Lockhart
Following an illness of five weeks, William Edgar Lockhart passed away in an Ottawa hospital on Thursday, Sept 29th in his 74th year. Born in Almonte, he was a son of the late Arthur Lockhart and his wife Margaret Cowie. In 1904 he married Miss Jean Houston of Almonte who survives. Most of his life was spent in Almonte where he followed his trade of painting and decorating until recent years when he and his wife lived with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs Arnold Illingworth in Carleton Place. Besides his wife, he leaves one son Gordon of Belleville; one daughter, Madeline, Mrs Arnold Illingworth of Carleton Place; four brothers, Walter of Perth; Herbert of Ottawa; Harry of Carleton Place and Arthur of Almonte. There are also four grandchildren. The funeral service was held on October 1st at 2 p.m. at Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Carleton Place and interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev H.W. Giffin of Memorial Park United Church officiated. The pallbearers were Messrs M.R. Young, Martin Maxwell, Alex Houston, Dan Dutrizac all of Almonte; Elmer Barber and John McGregor of Carleton Place.

Well-known Painter And Decorator Passes
Mr Arthur Lockhart, a life-long resident of this area, passed away at Almonte General Hospital on Sunday, February 23, 1969. Born in Almonte, August 20th, 1893, he was the youngest son of the late Arthur Lockhart and Margaret Cowie. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, the former Lila Bennett and three children, Mel and Archie of Almonte, and Hilda (Mrs Keith Jackson), Bowmanville. One brother Harry, of Carleton Place also survives. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Almonte. Rev Skoutajan conducted the service. Burial was in Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were four grandsons, Wayne and Don Lockhart, Brian and Arthur Jackson, Clark Larocque and Edgar Carroll. Many beautiful floral tributes and donations to worthy causes were received.

A new sorrow had been thrust upon the household by the death, on Tuesday morning last, after a few days illness from convulsions, of Mrs Bruce's child, Clarence, aged six months. Hamilton, at the Warrington Apartments, 415 Elgin street on Tuesday morning. About ten days ago Miss Hamilton, who lived at 218 Waverley street, felt ill and went to her nephew's apartment, where she became worse and was forced to go to bed. Within a few days her illness had become serious and Tuesday morning she died. She was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Duncan Hamilton, early settlers in Almonte. A year ago her father was buried and six week ago her mother died. A member of Chalmers United church, she was possessed of a quiet retiring nature and devoted most of her attention to her home life. She was employed by Charles Ogilvie for the past 15 years. Surviving are: one sister, Miss Nellie M. Hamilton, and four brothers, T.L. Hamilton, and W.G. Hamilton, of Ottawa; J.G. Hamilton, of Toronto, and J.H. Hamilton, Capreol, Ont. The funeral was held from her nephew's apartment on Thursday at 1 p.m. by motor to Almonte. The service at the house was conducted by Rev Dr J.W. Woodside.

On Tuesday, at 11 a.m., the white winged messenger entered the home of Mr D. Hamilton, bearing away the spirit of his youngest daughter, Mary, at the early age of nineteen years. The news of her death came as a sudden shock, causing a wave of the deepest sympathy from all citizens towards this much respected family. The deceased had been ailing for some months, and on the advice of her physician, she was taken to St Luke's hospital, Ottawa, where everything was done to relieve her pain and prolong life, but without avail. She was brought home Saturday, and gradually became weaker until the day of her death. Mary was beloved by all for her sweet disposition and her upright Christian life. In all her illness she was bright and cheerful, never complaining, and her death is a blow to her parents. The funeral took place on Thursday at 2 p.m, to the eighth line cemetery, Rev Mr Bennet conducting the services. Beautiful flowers, in bouquets, wreaths and sprays were received from kind and sympathetic friends in Almonte, Ottawa and Wakefield.

A familiar figure on By Ward Market where he was weighmaster and collector for the past 12 years, Thomas L. Hamilton died suddenly at his home, 415 Elgin street, Wednesday afternoon, He was at his usual post during Tuesday's market and seemed in good health. During his service with the city, "Tom", as everyone called him, weighed hundreds of tons of meat and coal and became known to farmers and dealers for miles around. Reporters "covering" the market beat were always certain of getting a cheery message from him as they made their rounds. "He was one of the most efficient men we ever had", T.A. Hand, market superintendent, said today. Born near Almonte, Ont., Mr Hamilton was the son of the late Duncan and Agnes Hamilton. Educated at Almonte schools, he married Ruth Dauley there before coming to Ottawa in 1925. Mrs Hamilton predeceased him in Ottawa four years ago. Before taking the By Ward Market post in 1930, Mr Hamilton worked for various department stores in the city, including Charles Ogilvy, Limited, and C.D.S. He was a member of the Pembroke Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of the Rebekah Lodge, I.O.O.F., and of the Pembroke Masonic Order, also. In Ottawa he attended Knox Presbyterian Church. Surviving are three sons, Roy, of Pembroke; Allan, of Ottawa, and Morris, of Sault Ste Marie; one sister, Nellie Hamilton, of Ottawa, and two brothers, G.J. Hamilton, of North Bay. Three grandchildren, one in Pembroke and two in Sault ste Marie, also survive. Funeral services will be held at the parlours of George H. Rogers, Ltd, 172 Elgin street, on Friday at 1.30 p.m. Burial will take place in Auld Kirk cemetery, Almonte.

Going to Ottawa quite a number of years ago, he was employed with various departmental stores. until 12 years ago when he became weigh-master and collector at By Ward Market. His wife, the former Ruth Dauley, predeceased him by four years. In Ottawa, Mr Hamilton attended Knox Presbyterian church, He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Pembroke and the I.O.O.F, and Rebekah Lodges. Surviving are three sons, Roy, of Pembroke; Maurice, of Sault Ste Marie; and Allan Hamilton, Ottawa' two brothers, J.G. Hamilton, of Toronto, and J.H. Hamilton, of North Bay. Madeline Illingworth
A longtime resident of the Carleton Place area, M. Madeline (Lockhart) Illingworth died at the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital on June 3, 1989. The daughter of the late William Lockhart and his wife Jean Houston, Madeline was born in Almonte. After completing her early education in Almonte, she pursued a career in nursing. Outside of work, she was a member of Zion Memorial United Church, Carleton Place. Madeline was married to Arnold Illingworth in Almonte on July 23, 1938. Aside from her husband, she is survived by four nieces and sister-in-law Edna Lockhart of Belleville. Predeceased by brother Gordon Edgar Lockhart. Rev W. McDowell officiated the funeral from the Kerry Funeral Home, Carleton Place, on June 5, 1989 at 11 a.m. Interment in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. Staff members of Kerry Funeral Home acted as pallbearers

Local Businessman Archie Lockhart Dies Suddenly
A well known area businessman, Archie Lockhart, proprietor of Lindsay Farm Equipment in Almonte passed away suddenly in Almonte General Hospital on Saturday, September 14th, 1974. Mr Lockhart had suffered from a heart condition for some time. He was 55 years of age. Born in Almonte on October 3rd, 1918, the son of the late Arthur Lockhart and Lyla Bennett, who survives, he was educated in local schools and was a lifelong resident of the area. On May 23rd, 1942, he married the former Margaret Lindsay at Almonte United Church. Well known in the agricultural field throughout the area, Mr Lockhart was associated with the farm equipment business for over 30 years during which time he worked with Mr John Lindsay finally taking over the business in 1963. For many years he was an active member of the Almonte Curling Club and was an avid competitor until the local rink burned down a few years ago. Besides his wife, Margaret, he is survived by a son, Donald, one brother, Mel, of Almonte and a sister, Hilda (Mrs Keith Jackson), of Bowmanville. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Heather. Funeral services for Mr Lockhart were held from the Kerry Funeral Home to Auld Kirk Cemetery for interment on Monday, September 16. Rev Robt J McCrea conducted the services. Pallbearers were Brian Jackson, Arthur Jackson, Wayne Lockhart, Ronald Lindsay, David Drummond and Gilmour Drummond.
