    LINES
Written on the death of Buchanan Paterson, who died
    15th Feb., 1881.
Again Death's cold, dull hand His sceptre sword hath swayed ? Severed from this baleful land ? in a clayey grave hath laid A faithful friend and father ? A frame of life and love: Gone ? to dwell with "Our Father;" He lives with Him above.
Methinks, as upon thy face With weeping eyes I gaze, In that happy, holy place, I hear thee sing His praise. Though thou wast not rich in gold, Thou are rolled around with glory; Thou canst all mysteries unfold; No more thy mind shall worry.
We miss thee from our home, Around that happy hearth. Thou art where ? no more to roam ? Light and love ne'er knew of dearth. We miss thee ? the neighbourhood In which thou didst reside, Thy parental hand and brotherhood Ne'er more with us shall abide. "Who is he for whom our tears Flow'd and will not cease to flow. Full of honours and of years, In the dust his head lies low. It was one whose open face Did his inmost heart reveal, One who wore with meekest grace On his forehead heaven's broad seal." We mourn not as those to whom, Frail man, no hope is given ? Though thy body's in the tomb, Thy soul doth sound in heaven. Dust to dust and clay to clay, How prone and wont man is to stray, Fill not your mind with dismay Christ will save you if you may.

    Mr Wm Paterson Passes Away
Mr Wm Paterson, of "Rose Hill Farm," passed away this (Thursday) morning, following a paralytic attack. He was in his 88th year, and was one of the oldest residents of the township of Ramsay. The funeral will take place on Friday 10th inst., at two o'clock, to the eighth line cemetery, service at the house at half-past one. A fuller reference will be made next week to the late Mr Paterson, who, in his earlier life, was a prominent resident of the township.

1916, Friday November 17, The Almonte Gazette page 8
    The Late Wm Paterson
The late Wm Paterson was born at "Kelvin Bank" on the farm within a half a mile of the one on which he spent his whole life one, on October 1st, 1829. This was seven years after the first settler appeared. At this time the country was in a very primitive state, the road to Perth being to follow the limestone ridge from Ramsay, likewise to Brockville. The road was blazed through the woods on the trees. When they had to get some necessaries of life their mode of travel was on foot. Bills in those days were paid more in exchange than in cash as at present. In those days the settlers could tell on many trilling experiences with the wolves, which were plentiful at the time. Though educational advantages were not so good as ours the late Wm Paterson acquired a good education by improving his evenings. The first school he attended was held in the log barn still standing on the farm on which he lived, with sparse advantages compared with the present day. He was married in Ramsay on the 31st day of December, 1857, to Margaret Paterson. Mrs Paterson predeceased her husband a little over two years, after living to celebrate their sixty-fifth anniversary. This was a hard blow to him. Mr Paterson was for many years engaged in Sunday School work and die not give up till almost his eighty-fifth year, when his strength failed him. He was the instrument in God's hand of helping many to a saving knowledge of Christ. The funeral on November 9th was large, and testified to the good feeling that prevailed toward one who had been a life-long member. The pallbearers were six elders from the congregation in which he had for many years officiated in that capacity. The family that mourns his loss are George and William at home, Robert M., at Luseland, Sask., Dr. T. R. in Almonte, and Dr. John R., at Bow Island, Alberta.

    Killed Instantly
On Friday last a telegram came to Mr R.M. Paterson with the shocking news that his brother, Mr Jas. B. Paterson, had been instantly killed in San Julian, Chihuahua, Mexico, on the 13th of June, by falling into the drive wheel of a stamp mill. These are the meagre details that told the sad story. The delay in getting the word is accounted for by the fact that Mr Paterson was engaged in putting in a mining plant at a place some two hundred miles back in the country the only means of travel to and from being on horseback. The deceased was the eldest of five sons of Mr Wm Paterson, of Ramsay, and was about 44 years of age. When twenty years of age he went to Ottawa and learned the machinist business and afterwards went West, and finally landed in Mexico about sixteen years ago. having possessed himself of a knowledge of mechanical engineering he at once secured lucrative employment at the mines, and it was while engaged at this work that he met his death He was married a few years ago to an American lady in Mexico, who survives him. On receipt of the telegram Mr Paterson at once communicated with the sender, and expects to shortly receive full particulars of the shocking occurrence.

    DEATHS
In Ramsay, on the 19th inst, Mary M. daughter of Wm Paterson, Esq., Rose Hill, Ramsay, aged 8 years.
When we see a perfect blossom, That we tended with such care, Rudely taken from our bosom, How our aching hearts despair. Round her little grave we linger Till the setting sun is low, Feeling all our hopes have perished With the flower we cherished so. Chorus We shall sleep, but not forever, There will be a glorious dawn, We shall meet to part ? no, never ? On the resurrection morn.

    Dr John H. Paterson
Dr John H. Paterson, of Bow Island, Alta., died on Saturday at Medicine Hat following an operation. An elder brother was with him when he died. The remains were interred with those of his wife at Bow Island. The late Dr. Paterson was a son of the late Mr and Mrs William Paterson, of Ramsay. He was educated at Almonte High School and proceeded to McGill University, where he graduated in medicine about twelve years ago. Immediately after his graduation he went west and settled in Bow Island, in the province of Alberta. He became a very successful practitioner and was recognized as the leading citizen of the place. While he was a student at McGill he underwent an operation for appendicitis, from the effects of which he never fully recovered, although the operation after which he died was performed to remedy a stomach trouble. He lived only a week. He had been passing through Medicine Hat to have a yachting holiday on a cruser on the Pacific coast which he had purchased. His brother, R.M., who was a merchant in Luseland, had hope to be able to join him. Six years ago Dr. Paterson visited his old home here and he had expected to be here again for the Old Boys' Reunion at the end of July. Besides his brother in the west, he is survived by three brothers, W.C. and G.E. are farmers in Ramsay, and Thomas R. is the well known dentist of Almonte. The late Dr. Paterson's wife was a Port Dalhousie girl. She died about two years ago.
