    George Coad was born in 1783 at Wicklow, Ireland to James Codd and Ann Codd.

    In 1810 he married Mary Blackburn, .

    Later, they emmigrated to Ontario, Canada and homesteaded at Kitley Township, Leeds County, Ontario.

    They had nine children:
    1. Jane Coad married Stephen Campbell on Oct 19, 1851.

    2. Catherine Coad, was born in 1811 in Wicklow Ireland, died on Feb 18, 1889 in Wawanosh Twp. E. Huron County, ON Canada aged 78, and was buried in Deacon's Memorial, E. Huron County, ON Canada.

    3. William Coad was born on May 16, 1813 in Wicklow Ireland and died on Jan 24, 1901 aged 87.

    1. Thomas and Elizabeth Codd and their five children arrived in Canada in 1820, "and in

    the month of August of the same year proceeded to Lanark to obtain land." (See Upper

    Canada Land Petition's, 27 August 1828, p. 106). Thomas Codd and his son George

    located on lots 3N.E.., 4, and 5, concession 12. George obtained the patent for lot4S.W...
    2. Family information is that the outcome of a dispute about a political issue accounts for

    the difference in the spelling of the surname Codd in Canada. Thomas Sr., and his son

    Richard selected "Coad", George, Thomas, Abraham, and James decided on "Code".

    Codes who settled in Kitley in Leeds were also divided as to how they spelled the surname.

    Family information is that they were relatives of Thomas Codd.

    OBITUARY: ABRAHAM CODE
    June 11th, 1891 Rideau Record:

    One by one the pioneer settlers of this country are laid low by the hand of death and called away from the scenes and the associations as familiar and dear to them.

    The latest to obey the summons in this district is Mr. Abraham Code, who died at his home in Montague on Friday, after a lingering illness of several months.

    He had reached the ripe old age of 74 years and as were his years so was the esteem in which he was held by all his wide circle of acquaintances.

    He was buried on Sunday and his funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Smith's Falls. 117 vehicles as is said being in line.

    The remains were taken to St. John's church, where service was conducted by the rector, Rev. Mr. Nesbitt and thence to the cemetery.

    His wife Susanna followed her children to Duluth, Minnesota and she is buried at Forest Hill Cemetary, Duluth, Saint Louis, Minnesota.

    While they were married and raising their family, James and Susanna had homesteaded on land and at Dunn's Valley, Algoma District, Ontario, Canada. The property had a lakeshore (Skookum Lake) where the children could swim to cool off in the summer.

    James' brother Abraham also came to Dunn's Valley, homesteaded and raised his family on adjoining land.

    They lived in a log house that James built. There was an out building that housed a pump and stored some food for winter. The house had an inside pump just inside the door and a wash basin in the kitchen. The kitchen had a large cook stove fired by wood, used for cooking all their meals. They raised all their own food such as pigs, cows and chickens, and stored it in the root cellar(a dug out place in the side of a hill with a door on it), vegetables were always stored there for the winter. They slaughtered their own animals, stored the meat in crocks, and salted it down so it would keep during winter.

    Meals were often stew, potatoes, and homemade bread or rolls. Dessert was usually canned fruit like a large bowl of blue berries, raspberries, gooseberries, apples, and/or carrots. Small individual bowls were set beside the big bowl and it was dished with a spoon. When they were done with their meal, everyone would would have a dish of sauce.

    Laundry was done in the out building. Water for washing was heated in big wash tubs and carried to the out building. They used kerosene lamps for light, and they had no television or radio.

    Their days in summer were spent tending crops. The vegetables were usually tended by the women, and the hay and oat fields were taken care of by the men. In the summer the children went to the woods and pick berries to be canned, they also helped make hay stacks and filled the barn for the animals winter feed. They also had to feed the pigs and water the horses.

    The school was one room, and also used for the church. A teacher, usually a young woman, came out to teach from Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario. She was usually single, and would board and room during the school year with whatever farmer had room for her.

    On Sundays, everyone went to the one roomed church. Usually the minister was a circuit rider. He would be provided a room and board by some farmer. He would come and stay, sometimes just a week, and sometimes longer. The local families would take turns feeding him his meals, and after he was done he would move on to the next town.

    Their evenings were usually short. After they were done with their chores and their schoolwork was done, it was bedtime. Sometimes in the evening, the mother or someone else in the family would play the pump organ in the parlor, and the family would sing hymns together.

    Susanna sewed clothes for the children. When the kids were out of school, vacations were sought for some of them. They would go to Sault Sainte Marie, and work as a milliner's helper. They would work for their room and board while attending school. Others were apprenticed as dressmakers. Most of the married went to quilting bees and made their own blankets and bedding from flour and feed sacks.

    Occasionally things were ordered from Sears Roebuck catalogs. If they were lucky, once a month or once in three months, they would all be able to go to town in the horse and wagon for supplies. It was a long trip and if they were coming back late, they would have a neighbor take care of their evening chores, and then they would return the favor.

    In the fall it was threshing time. One family owned the thresher and they would all move from farm to farm to do the threshing. Then the family would cook meals for the threshers until it was all done. Then all the threshers would move to the next farm. This was a very cooperative thing.

    Saturday nights, dances were held in the schoolhouse or the church. The men would play fiddles for music. The women would bring clothes baskets filled with sandwiches for lunch. The whole family gathered. If there were babies they came to and they slept in the clothes baskets in the kitchen while the music played and the adults and children danced. Coffee was made at mid evening and the dance floor was cleaned. The men put up saw horses and table on tops on top of them, and lunch was served on them. After eating, the men took down the tables, put the benches against the walls and swept all the mud that they tracked in. Then it was time to dance again. Young, old, and all who could walk would dance.

    In the winter they went to church by sleigh and cutter, keeping warm by covering up with wool blankets. Sometimes they were snowed in and unable to get mail for weeks at a time, so it was important to load in the supplies, like flour and sugar, before the snow came in. The highlight of the evening on cold days was the kitchen. The kitchen stove burned most of the time during the night. The fire wood was piled up in the stove, but burned out quite often. The family gathered in their winter underwear in the kitchen trying to keep warm while dressing by the stove which was started early in the a.m. by mom or dad.

    Thus was life on a farm during the early 1800's in Canada.

    One of Calgary's oldest citizens died this week in Detroit, Mich., in the person of Abraham Jackson, father of Messrs. Thomas, Charles and Kelsey Jackson of Calgary, of Mrs. Charles W. Leech, of Detroit, and Mrs. A. G. Harrison and Mrs. G. T. Bragg, of Edmonton. He was 83 years of age. The remains were brought here for interment and the funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the undertaking parlors of A. M. Shaver to the Union cemetery, where the remains of his wife repose.
    The late Mr. Jackson came of a pioneer Canadian family, his parents having settled near Carleton Place, Ontario, more that a century ago. They carved out two farms in the bush and their son, who is the subject of this notice, followed their example and engaged in farming for some years near Wingham, Ont., coming west in 1890. He went east to visit his daughter in Detroit about a year ago and was taken ill about six months ago. He was a member of the Methodist church, and a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters for more than 45 years.

    Hezekiah Stewart Flinn passed away Wednesday, April 26, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hobbs, east of Innisfail, at the age of 85 years. Born at Smith Falls, Ontario, Mr. Flinn came to the district 36 years ago and has resided around Wimborne and Innisfail ever since. Surviving are three daughters, Margaret Smith of Rossland, B.C.; Sarah Hobbs of Innisfail, and Celesta Hicks of Dapp, Alta.; three sons, William of Calgary, and John and Edward of Knee Hill Valley; also twenty-two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services were held on Friday, April 28, at 2:45 p.m. from the Mayton Hall, with Rev. A.D. Currie officiating. Burial took place in the family plot at the Mayton cemetery.

    PEARL ETHEL SINGLETON was born on March 15, 1891 in Dunn's Valley, Algoma District, Ontario, Canada to James Singleton, and Susanna Pattison.

    She spent her formative years on the farm and at school in Dunn's Valley, Algoma District, Ontario, Canada.

    She later immigrated to the USA and resided at Duluth, Minnesota.

    For a time in 1910 she worked as a servant for Duluth Lawyer, James Wanlass.

    Pearl married Ira Lycurgus Ricketts. on Dec 19, 1911 at Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. They had four children:

    1918-1977 - Calvin Ira Ricketts
    1921-2005 - Mrs. Helen Grimm

    Pearl's husband Ira, was a detective sergeant with the Duluth Police Dept. He spent eighteen years with the Department and served as a popular policeman who was known for hard work and efficiency in his duties. Ira L. Ricketts died in 1933 due to a paralytic stroke after which he had suffered several weeks.

    After her husband's death, mother Pearl took in laundry and ironing and rented rooms to boarders to ensure that the family wanted for nothing. She was a devoted mother and wanted to ensure the success of her children, which she did.

    Pearl died on 25 April 1976, aged 85, of old age, in Duluth, Saint Louis, Minnesota. She was buried on 25 April 1976 in Forest Park Cemetary, Duluth, Saint Louis, Minnesota.

    Note:
    Pearl played the "Autoharp" and sang beautifully. She loved to recite nursery rhymes, and tell her grandchildren stories. Portland Square Park was across the street from her home in Duluth and she brought her grandchildren there when they visited. The swing set was the most fun for everyone.

    Note: Pearl had a dog named "Blondie" and a tabby cat named "Tiger."

    Pearl's headstone is marked with the symbol of the Eastern Star, a branch of the Freemasons, open to all family members.

    Surviving are a son, Calvin, Las Cruces, N.M.; two daughters. Mrs. Helen Grimm and Mrs. Alma Ostrander, Duluth, 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

    Mrs David Metcalfe
    Mrs David Metcalfe passed away on Wednesday, June 14, at her home in Ramsay after a long illness. Her maiden name was Sarah J. Rea and she was born in Ramsay 59 years ago. She is survived by her husband and one daughter, Miss Gertrude M. Metcalfe, of the Civil Service, Ottawa. She leaves to mourn her loss two sisters: Elizabeth (Mrs John L. Paul) of Carleton Place; and Emma (Mrs W.H. Robertson) of Ramsay; and five brothers: George Rea, of Westboro; Joseph W. Rea, of Kincardine, Ont; Wm B. Rea of Dauphin, Man; James H. Rea, of Grand Forks, N.D. and Wesley H. Rea, of Ramsay, Elijah and John are dead. The funeral service which was conducted by Rev J.D. McCrea, her minister, was very impressive. It was attended by a very large concourse of mourners although the weather was wet and the roads heavy. The scene at the beautifully situated Metcalfe home was a notable one. The spacious yard and the long roadway leading to the eminence on which the house is situated, and which commands a magnificent view of the surrounding country were blocked with motor cars and other vehicles and when the long procession wended its way along the beautiful eighth line the occasion was one long to be remembered. On both sides of the house there are many relatives and while very many of these were present there was also a very large representation of neighbours and friends who came to pay their last respects to the much beloved lady. Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were: M r Joseph N Rea, Kincardine; Mr and Mrs Geo Rea, Westboro; Mrs Jas Smith, Pembroke; Mr and Mrs Jas Metcalfe, Beachburg; Mr Wm Metcalfe, Beachburg; Mr Jas Gilmour, Cobden; Mr and Mrs Robt Metcalfe, Pakenham; Mrs Jas Metcalfe, Ottawa, and Miss K. McNabb. The pallbearers were: Messrs John, Hugh, Alex and Wm Metcalfe, Wm J. Rea and W.H. Robertson.

    Mrs W.H. Robertson
    Final tribute was paid to the memory of Mrs William H. Robertson by a large number of relatives and friends who attended her funeral on Tuesday, Dec 30, at the home of her son, Mr Harold R. Robertson, 10th concession of Ramsay Township. Rev H.C. Wolfraim of Almonte United Church officiated and interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Mrs Robertson passed away at Carleton Place on Sunday, Dec 28th, in her 81st year. Deceased was born on the 9th line of Ramsay, a daughter of the late Joseph Rea and his wife, Margaret Code. She received her education in the public school in the district and Almonte High School. Fifty-eight years ago she married William H. Robertson and they farmed in the township latterly on the 11th line. Mr Robertson died in 1933. For the past 16 years, Mrs Robertson resided in Carleton Place and Almonte. Surviving are two sons, Harold of Ramsay and Arthur of Guelph. Two other sons, Bert and Russell, predeceased her several years ago. Of her immediate family she leaves one brother, Wesley Rea of Carleton Place and one sister, Elizabeth, Mrs J. Paul of Toronto. Many beautiful floral tributes testified to the esteem in which Mrs Robertson was held. The pallbearers were: Messrs D.W. Stewart, Alex Stewart, Cecil Turner, W.T. James, Victor Kellough and Wm Neilson.

    Mr Wesley Rea
    The funeral of Wesley Rea took place on Friday afternoon from Fleming Bros Funeral Home, Carleton Place, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte, for interment. Rev D.C. Munro officiated at the service. Mr Rea died at his home on January 13th as a result of a heart seizure. He was born on April 2nd, 1874, in Ramsay Township, son of the late Joseph Rea and his wife, Margaret Code. He was a farmer all his life an all his active years were spent on the family homestead on the 9th line of Ramsay Township. He was married to the former Miss Isa Hilborne, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Hilborne also of Ramsay Township. They were member of Trinity United Church in Almonte. About five years ago, Mr Rea sold his farm to Mr Geo Wylie and Mr and Mrs Rea moved to Carleton Place. Mrs Rea died on Dec 19, 1950. In Carleton Place, Mr Rea attended Memorial Park United Church. Survivors include two sons and two daughters, Howard, of Renfrew, and Melvin, of Almonte; Evelyn Rea of Carleton Place and Mrs H. Holland of Toronto; also a sister, Mrs E. Paul of Toronto, and two grandchildren. The pallbearers were H. Rea, H. Robertson, E. Robertson, J Brydges, L. Watson, Almonte; A. Matthews

    Charles Jackson, 86, well-known Calgary pioneer and past president of the Southern Alberta Pioneers and Old Timers Association, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Eva Lapp, 1711 29th St. S.W.
    Mr. Jackson, who had been ill since the spring, died on a corner of the homestead he established in 1882. His daughter's house was built on a corner of his original property which originally occupied "Shaganappi Point" now part of the Municipal golf course and the Killarney municipal subdivision.
    Born in Wingham, Ontario, Mr. Jackson came directly to Calgary on coming west in '82. In 1884 he started the city's first milk delivery, and was one of the early supporters of the Salvation Army when it first came to Calgary in 1887.
    Mr. Jackson was the only original member of the Army's citadel corps to celebrate the 60th anniversary in Calgary, celebrated in October, 1947. He was a member of the Army bank for many years and donated the site now occupied by the Booth Memorial Home.
    A familiar figure in Stampede parades, Mr. Jackson continued to drive the old steamer automobile which had once made him famous as "the first man in Calgary to own a car."
    During his many years in Calgary, he farmed for several years and later was engaged in real estate business. During the past few years he had continued to make his home here, although he had spent much time traveling through the United States and Eastern Canada.
    His wife, Mary Jane, died in Calgary in April, 1933. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Eva Lapp, Calgary, and Mrs. William Meaker, Lethbridge; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

    Abram Kersey Jackson, 73, died Saturday at his home, 2410 27th St. W., following a lengthy illness. Mr. Jackson had lived in Calgary district for 43 years.

    Born in Wingham, County Heron, Ont., Mr. Jackson came to Calgary and began farming in the west Calgary district. He erected the first three stores on 17th Ave. W. directly across from Western Canada high school. Mr. Jackson retired in 1932.

    Surviving are his wife, Minnie of Calgary; three sons, Cecil and Everett of Detroit, Mich., and Beverly of Calgary; one brother, Charles of Calgary; eight grandchildren.
