Obit. ? The Late William Cannon
On July 1st, at the residence of his sister, Mrs J.A. Gemmill, Mr Wm. Cannon passed from earthly scenes, in the 77th year of his age. For the past fifteen years he had been paralyzed, and had but little use of his limbs of the power of speech; but heart failure, or another slight shock of paralysis, is supposed to have been the immediate cause of death. Deceased was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in October, 1816. He was the eldest son of the late Dr. Cannon (who practiced his profession in these parts many years ago) and a brother to Mr Gilbert Cannon, Almonte. They came to Canada in 1835. The subject of this sketch married Miss Carswell, from Glasgow, four years after arriving in Canada; the latter died in February, 1877. They had no children. Mr Cannon entered business with the late John A. Gemmill in Carleton Place, and remained there some years. He went to Lapasse in 1850, and afterward to Beachburg, where he was clerk of the division court for fifteen or sixteen years ? until he was paralyzed, in 1878. He was a most useful citizen, being a conveyancer, and doing a great deal of business that is now done by lawyers. He was a very intelligent man, and was held in high esteem by those who knew him for his excellent qualities of head and heart. During the past fifteen years he resided with Mrs Gemmill here, and was tenderly cared for. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, and was largely attended. The remains were interred in the eighth line cemetery.

    THE LATE GILBERT CANNON
Death Carried off One Who or Over Sixty Years
Was a Familiar Figure in These Parts.
It was known for some time back the Mr. Gilbert Cannon was near the end of life's pilgrimage, yet when the announcement of his death was made on Monday last it was received with deep regret that one who was for so long a time prominent Almonter had gone the way of all flesh. A few months ago he went to Pembroke to live with his sister, Mrs A. Irving, and the heart affection from which he suffered brought his life to a close on Sunday at noon. He had gone three months beyond the allotted span of threescore-andten. The late Mr Cannon was born in Glasgow, Scotland, came to this part in 1835 ? sixty-four years ago ? and has been actively identified with the growth of Almonte and Ramsay nearly all those years. In his earlier years he was head clerk and book-keeper in the store of his brother-in-law Mr Thos. Leckie, who had a store at Leckie's Corners. and after the place was called. Later on Mr Cannon got interested in the woolen manufacturing and flouring industries, and for the last quarter-of-a-century or more was actively connected with some of our factories. He was one of the stockholders in the first paper started in Almonte ? the Examiner. That was in 1858. Mr Cannon was highly esteemed by a host of friends, and those with whom he came in business contact respected him as a man who was upright, honest and true in his dealings. He was a warm Conservative, and took a great interest in political matters. He was well educated, and might creditably have filled many public positions but for his exceedingly sensitive nature. Mr Cannon was connected with the old Free Kirk on the Eighth Line of Ramsay ? almost the last link between the old-time friends who held aloft the banner of the blue at the Disruption contest. Deceased mother, widow of the late Dr. Cannon, gave her barn for those to worship in who were locked out of the old stone church, and ever had an open house ready to receive the homeless Free Kirk clergymen on their journeys. Gilbert Cannon had a kind and genial manner and a cherry greeting for his friends at all times. The body was brought to Almonte by train on Wednesday. At the station many of our citizens took a last look at the familiar features prior to their being consigned to the tomb in the eighth line cemetery.

    ?b?John Cannon?/b?
A well known and respected resident of this community passed peacefully away at his home on the eighth line of Ramsay on Monday evening, April 16th, in the person of Mr John Cannon, after a lingering illness. Up to about a year ago, Mr Cannon had been able to be about the farm, though he had not worked on it for some years. Then he had the misfortune to slip on a step and fall, breaking his hip bone. But, owing to a wonderful vitality and careful nursing during this time he recovered, and was able to walk about again. In January, however, he was forced to keep his bed entirely on account of a general weakness, and from then on, gradually sank in spite of everything that could be done to save him. Deceased was born in Ramsay township 79 years ago, on the farm on which he spent the greater part of his life. He is survived by a widow, who resides at the home in Ramsay, and seven daughters, ? Minnie of Edmonton, Alberta; Mrs A.J. Carswell, of Cobalt; Mrs F.E. Graff of Cochran; Mrs S. Savage, of Big Valley, Alberta; Mrs H. Irving and Mrs T. Irving, both of Smiths Falls and Gladys of the Kapuskasing Public School Staff; also by one son, Carswell Cannon of Big Valley, Alberta. Another daughter who died some years ago. With the exception of her son and Mrs Savage, who were unable to be present, all the members of the family attended the funeral. Besides the sorrowing family, he is survived by five brothers, his only sister being dead. The brothers are, William, on the homestead, James, of Edmonton, Allan and David in the West; and Dr Cannon of Watertown, New York. The sympathy of many friends goes out to them in their bereavement.

Death Concludes Long Career In Medical Practice
Dr Gilbert Cannon Oldest Living Graduate of McGill In Medicine
Death removed the oldest living medical graduate of McGill University, Saturday afternoon, in the person of Dr Gilbert Cannon. He was in his 85th year and died at the home of Mr John M. Chapman, 9th line of Ramsay. The funeral, Monday afternoon, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, was largely attended. Services were conducted by Rev C.D. McLellan of Bethany United Church, assisted by Rev A.J Fowlie of Almonte Presbyterian and Rev Donald Munro of Carleton Place. Pallbearers were Doctors Dunn, Kelly and Metcalfe of Almonte, and Messrs W.W. Keats of Watertown, N.Y., Melville Paul and W.C. Pollock. The late Dr Cannon was born April 14th, 1855, on the old family homestead, eighth line of Ramsay. He was a son of the late John Cannon and his wife Harriet Carswell and a grandson of Dr William Cannon, the first qualified medical man to practise in this district. The grandfather was a surgeon in the Royal Navy and came to this country n the early 30's. A son of his, who died at the age of four and who was born in the Old Country, was the first person buried in the Auld Kirk Cemetery in the year 1836. He made his calls on horseback and had an office on the corner of the Baird farm, now the Mill of Kintail. Later he removed his surgery to the Cannon homestead on the eighth line of Ramsay. His wife was Margaret King of the Isle of Bute. The grandfather died in 1841. The late Dr Gilbert Cannon was called after an uncle who ran a woollen mill in Almonte, years ago, and was one of the best known in the town. The place was located at the foot of Cannon falls below the stone bridge. Born April 14, 1855, Dr. Cannon got his early education at the country school near his home and at the Almonte High School. He enrolled on the medical school of McGill University and graduated with honours on April 1, 1877, at the age of 22. After a short interne period in Montreal General Hospital, followed by a post graduate course in New York Polyclinic he began practice at Oxbow, Jefferson County, and afterward at Watertown, N.Y., where for 35 years he specialized in eye, ear, nose and throat work. Dr Cannon served as vice-president of the old Watertown Medical Society Aid and was one of its founders. Dr Cannon was a pioneer in the use of X-ray as an aid to medical surgery and his X-ray pictures taken in the famous "Hachets Harbour murder case," are said to have been the first accepted by the United States Supreme Court as evidence. After a distinguished career of 50 years in medicine, Dr Cannon retired in 1928 and returned to the old family homestead, 8th line of Ramsay, to spend his remaining days where he lived with his niece, Mrs John Chapman, the former Dora Cannon. Dr Cannon was a bachelor and the last member of his immediate family, one sister and five brothers having predeceased him.

    Ottawa Journal - January 20, 1896 -
Death of John Bryson - The Conservative M.P. For Pontiac Passes Away - But Forty-seven Years of Age - A Representative of the County Since 1882 - Sudden Attack of Disease on a Recent Lumbering Trip with Mr. Alexander Fraser

John Bryson, Conservative M.P. for Pontiac county, died at Fort Coulonge yesterday morning. The news was received in Ottawa with surprise and by many with deep regret. Few public men in the Ottawa Valley were better or more favorably known than the late Mr. Bryson. His death was very sudden, so sudden indeed that many friends did not know of his illness previous to the announcement of his death.

A week ago last Tuesday, accompanied by Mr. Fraser of this city, Mr. Bryson left on an inspection of his lumber business on the Coulonge river. Mr. Fraser speaking to The Journal this morning regarding the trip, stated that Mr. Bryson was in good health when they started. The distance to the limits was ninety miles from the mouth of the Coulonge river. After three days drive they reached the shanties. On Friday they went out and inspected the logs that had been cut, Mr. Bryson feeling in the best of spirits.

That evening Mr. Bryson took ill in the shanty. Saturday he was no better and Sunday he was worse. Fearing that Mr. Bryson was in the first stages of typhoid fever or some serious disease, Mr. Fraser says he urged him to start for home. Fixing Mr. Bryson up comfortably in a sleigh, the homeward journey was begun Tuesday morning. They reached Mr. Bryson's home at Fort Coulonge on Wednesday afternoon, at five o'clock. Medical attendance was at once procured. Dr. Klock, who was the medical attendant, saw that Mr. Bryson's illness was chronic and that death could not be averted, suffering as he was from heart-failure. Mr. Bryson lingered on until early yesterday morning when he expired.

Mr. Bryson was born Nov. 30, 1849, the second son of Hon. George Bryson. He went into the lumbering and farming business and did well, but always showed a liking for public work. He became Mayor of Mansfield in 1882, and in the same year was elected to parliament in the Conservative interest. The vote was Bryson, 1,047, N. McCuaig, Liberal, 931, and W. Somerville, Independent, 293. At the general election of 1887, he was again successful, defeating Thos. Craig, Liberal, by 1,681 to 966.

In 1891, there was another three cornered contest. Mr. Bryson was opposed by Thomas Murray, Liberal, and H. McLean, equal rights, and the vote resulted: Murray 1,100, Bryson 795, McLean 787. But, Mr. Murray, being unseated, Mr. Bryson defeated him in the by-election the following year.

Mr. Bryson was connected with a number of private enterprises. He was president of the Pontiac Telephone Company, and a director of the Crow River and Coulonge Boom Co.

He was twice married. His first wife, married in 1874, Miss Mary Bryson, daughter of Thomas Bryson, M.P.P., of Fort Coulonge, died some years back. Less than two years ago, Mr. Bryson married Miss White, of Montreal, who survives him, as well as two children, one boy seventeen years of age, and the other a girl aged seven months. One of Mr. Bryson's children, it will be remembered, was asphyxiated with her grandmother while visiting friends in Montreal. Mr. Bryson was a prominent Presbyterian.

The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon, at two o'clock. A special train will leave Aylmer for Fort Coulonge on the arrival of the Ottawa 9:30 train tomorrow morning to attend the funeral of the late John Bryson, M.P., returning after the funeral.

John married Mary Christina Bryson on 30 Dec 1874 in Fort Coulonge, Pontiac County, Quebec, Canada. Mary (daughter of Thomas Bryson and Jane Fumerton) was born on 4 Jul 1854 in Fort Coulonge, Pontiac County, Quebec, Canada; died on 22 Sep 1892 in Fort Coulonge, Pontiac County, Quebec, Canada. Ottawa Citizen - May 10, 1937 - Bryson

At Spruceholm, Fort Coulonge on Saturday, May 8, 1937, George Bryson, MLC, in his 85th year. Funeral from his late residence on Tuesday afternoon, May 11 at 2 pm (standard time). Interment in Fort Coulonge cemetery.

Ottawa Citizen - May 10, 1937 - Hon. Geo. Bryson, Noted Canadian Figure, Dies; Lumberman and Banker

Dean of the legislative council of Quebec, of which body he had been an honored member for half a century. Hon. George Bryson passed away Saturday at his residence, Spruceholm, Fort Coulonge, Quebec. The noted politician and businessman and outstanding citizen, not only of his native community or province, but of Canada, died in his 85th year. He was of a very philanthropic nature and made many contributions, not only to his own church, but to many other churches throughout the district. At all times he took a keen and active interest in the affairs of the Presbyterian Church, with which he had been connected since childhood. His passing will undoubtedly be the cause of keen regret by all who knew him.

He was not only a public servant of single ability, but also a keen businessman and at various times in his life was connected with many of the important commercial concerns in the Dominion. His business acumen was of the highest order and his advice on matters of moment was frequently sought by those high in the mercantile world.

Mr. Bryson was a true Quebecer, a man whose sympathies were strong toward both races in his native province. It was frequently stated by his colleagues in the legislative council, in which he served under five sovereigns, 11 lieutenants-governor and ten prime ministers, that he was responsible in no small measure for the warm feeling of cordiality which radiates through the Upper Chamber.

When he celebrated his 50th anniversary as a member of the council in November of last year, Hon. Hector Laferte, in a statement in the Upper House at that time, said that it was a remarkable event, not only in Quebec, but in Canada, and perhaps the whole empire. He said that it certainly falls to the lot of a few men to spend a lifetime in one legislative body.

In 1931 he was sworn in as minister without portfolio in the Tachereau administration, a post he held until 1934 when he resigned. He was chosen to represent the English minority in Quebec.

The last of the second generation of Bryson's on the Upper Ottawa, George Bryson was born on the Bryson farm at Fort Coulonge on July 20, 1852, the son of George Bryson of Paisley, Scotland and his wife, Robina Cobb of Glasgow, Scotland, both of whom had emigrated to Lanark County, Ontario in 1821. He received his primary education at Fort Coulonge, later attending colleges in Toronto and Montreal.

Following his graduation from college, he entered the lumber business with his brother, the late John Bryson, MP under the firm name of J. and G. Bryson. The lumber business was not entirely new to this young man, his father having made a notable contribution to that industry for many years previous. In 1909, he became a director of the Fraser-Bryson Company.

In banking circles he was an esteemed figure. His father was one of the founders of the Bank of Ottawa at the time of it's inception.. During it's early days this bank was known as the 'Lumberman's Bank' for the reason that four of its early directors were directly identified with the lumbering business, while others had direct interests in that line.

At the time of the merger of the Bank of Ottawa and the Bank of Nova Scotia in 1919, Hon. Mr. Bryson was its president, an office which he held from 1914. During the time he was president the bank made rapid strides, and at the time of the merger there were branch offices across Canada. Following the merger, Mr. Bryson was nominated to the office of director of the Bank of Nova Scotia, an office which he filled with honor during the balance of his life.

In 1887 he was appointed to the legislative council, a body upon which his father had served with distinction for many years. Mr. Bryson Sr. was a Liberal member in politics. His son was a Liberal and throughout his entire lifetime was an ardent and worthy supporter of the party.

In church circles, coming as he did from a long line of Presbyterians, his work was well-known. He gave generously of his time and talents to the many demands made upon him for charitable work and supported freely his home church, St. Andrew's, Fort Coulonge. Local politics also proved of great interest to Mr. Bryson, and he was a former mayor of Mansfield and Pontefract.

He married the late Helen Craig of Glen Walter, Ontario in 1875. Her father, James Craig, represented Glengarry County in the Ontario legislature at the time of Confederation. She predeceased him in 1933. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bryson enjoyed the utmost popularity not only in their own community, but wherever they were known.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J.H. Francis of Indian Head, Sask, and Mrs. Owen C. Toller of Ottawa. A sister, Mrs. Albert Boulter, of Fort Coulonge, died in February. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren; Miss Helen Cameron, who lived with Hon. Mr. Bryson at Fort Coulonge, J.B. Francis, Indian Head, Mrs. Curtis Bogart, Noranda, Miss Jean Moore, Master Bryson Moore, Mrs. Fred Bingham, Mrs. Arthur Henry Smith, Miss Nora Bryson, Master George Bryson, Miss Jean Bryson, Master George Toller, Master Eric Toller and Miss Joan Toller, all of Ottawa, one great-grandchild, Miss June Bingham, Ottawa and a son-in-law, Owen C. Toller of Ottawa.

The funeral will take place at 2 pm Tuesday to St. Andrew's Church, Fort Coulonge, and burial will be in the family plot there.

He was a keen sportsman and took great delight in hunting and fishing. He was an expert angler and whenever possible took the opportunity of going away with a few friends on a fishing trip. Another major interest in his life the Ottawa River Forest Protective Association, an organization which he served for many years as a director.

George married Helen Craig on 11 Aug 1875 in Cornwall, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry United Counties, Ontario, Canada. Helen (daughter of James Craig and Flora MacLeod) was born on 1 Sep 1855 in Charlottenburgh, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry United Counties, Ontario, Canada; died on 9 Sep 1933 in Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Sep 1933 in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery, Fort Coulonge, Outaouais Region, Quebec, Canada.
