    A Prominent Resident Gone
    It was sincere regret that his many friends learned a few weeks ago of the serious illness of Mr Wm Snedden, of Pakenham township, but that regret was changed to heartfelt sorrow when news of his death on Tuesday afternoon was heard. Mr Snedden had not been in good health for some months, advancing years and the consequent relaxing of physical energies telling upon the vigour and activity of his earlier years until he was laid aside from the everyday duties of life, and was finally called upon to pay the debt due Nature. The deceased was the eldest son of the late Alexander Snedden, having been born in Ramsay township at Blakeney and was 77 years of age. Over fifty-three years ago he was married to Miss Eliza Ann Dickson, daughter of the late Samuel Dickson, and to them ten children were born ? four daughters, Catherine Mary, Tena and Tillie, all of whom are dead, and six sons Alex, at home, Samuel, dead, William, Lumsden, Assa.; Robt A., at Pakenham; David, in British Columbia and Dr. Sylvester M., in Pembroke. Of his father's family three brothers are still living. These are James, in town, and Alex and David in Ramsay. Three sisters Mrs Gomersall, Mr Thos Mansfield and Mrs James Snedden are dead The late Mr Snedden was not a man who sought after publicity in his life time, but his natural ability and good judgement made him a man whose opinions were valued and whose advice and aid were frequently sought after, and it is not to be wondered at that repeated and determined efforts were made to induce him to accept public positions. But though he took a deep interest in both municipal, county and provincial matters, he steadfastly set his face against more than an ordinarily prominent position in any these capacities. In politics he was a Liberal, and to that party he gave an intelligent and conscientious support, always standing up manfully for what he was convinced was for righteousness and truth. He was a Presbyterian in religion, and was for many years a consistent member of the Blakeney church, prior to his connection with which attended the Pakenham church which the late Rev Dr. Mann was pastor for so many years. The funeral of the late Mr Snedden take place this (Thursday) afternoon at 1.30 to the eighth line cemetery. Much sympathy is felt for Mrs Snedden, the family and friends in their bereavement.

    William married Eliza Ann Dickson on 29 Mar 1853 in Pakenham Village, Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Eliza (daughter of Samuel Dickson and Catherine Lowe) was born on 5 Apr 1832 in Cedar Hill, Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 4 Jun 1909 in Rosebank, Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 7 Jun 1909 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Mr James Snedden
    Although called away in the full fruition of a long life, and the call one looked for with almost eager anticipation, the death of Mr James Snedden on Monday morning brought sadness to the hearts of many. He had been confined to bed for only a couple of weeks, but at times suffered severely, and though borne with that brightness and cheerfulness that characterized his whole life, he longed for release. The late Mr Snedden was born in the township of Ramsay, in 1831, a son of the late Alex. Snedden and Mary Whyte, and spent his whole lifetime within a small radius. He was married in 1856 to Catherine C. Snedden, daughter of the late Wm Snedden. To them two daughters were born, Mrs George Paterson and Miss Matilda Snedden, both living in Almonte. Mrs Snedden died in March 1897, since then Mr Snedden and his daughter have lived in their comfortable home on the river bank, which to Mr Snedden was a home indeed, his greatest pleasure being to spend his days in caring for it. Though possesses of ability and judgement that eminently fitted him for public service he could never be prevailed upon to take any part in such matters. He was of a kindly and genteel disposition that won him the friendship on many. Of three brothers Messrs William and Alex. are dead and David is the only one left. There were several sisters, but they passed away in early life. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, and though the day was a disagreeable one there was a good turn out of friends and acquaintances both from the town and from outside points to pay tribute to the memory of a worthy life. The pallbearers were Messrs A.D. Snedden and R.A. Snedden of Pakenham; W.A. Snedden, of Blakeney; Mansfield Snedden, of Appleton, George Mansfield, of Manotick, and Dr. M.H. Steele of Carleton Place.

    James married Catherine Cochran Snedden in 1856 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Mr David Snedden
    The last member of the older ones of the Snedden family passed away on Sunday when Mr David Snedden, youngest son of the late Alex Snedden and Mary Whyte answered to the inevitable summons and went out to cross the bar. The late Mr Snedden was the youngest son of the family of which he was the last, and was born in the old stone house that was built by his father near Blakeney, and where he spent his whole life. The building is now used as a cheese factory. The late David Snedden was married to Mary Snedden, a sister of the late James Snedden, and to them three children were born, Miss Minnie C., and Wm A., who are still living, and David, who was killed by being thrown from a horse about 25 years ago. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, and notwithstanding the almost impassable conditions of the roads in many places, a very large number of friends and neighbours gathered to show their respect for one whom they had learned to esteem and to value as a neighbour beyond that which is retained for others. He never sought public prominence, but his good judgement and kindly advice were often sought for by those who needed such. The pallbearers were Alex D. Snedden, R.A. Snedden, Mansfield Snedden, Geo Mansfield, Thos Geddes, and Grenville Toshack. The services at the house and the grave were conducted by Rev Mr Merrilees.

    David married Mary Snedden on 7 Jun 1860 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Obit. ? The Late Samuel Snedden
    Deep and sincere sorrow has been created in the hearts of a host of friends by the untimely death of Mr Samuel J. Snedden, son of Mr Wm Snedden, of Pakenham township, which took place rather suddenly last Sabbath evening. He was 28 years of age. Deceased was a most exemplary young man, and was very popular with all who knew him. He was for several years a clerk in Mr Jas Robertson's store in this town. Over a year ago he took ill with a lung trouble, which developed into consumption, and he grew weaker gradually till all hope of recovery was given up. The day on which he died, however, Mr Snedden had been in better spirits than usual. He had been up most of the day, and in the evening was in the act of retiring when he was seized with hemorrhage of the lungs, and died in a few minutes. Deceased being a member of Alpha Lodge I.O.O.F., Almonte, the funeral, which took place on Wednesday, to the 8th line cemetery, was under the auspices of that body. About 50 Oddfellows from this place attended. The cortege was one of the longest ever seen in the township, being nearly a mile in length. beautiful floral tributes adorned the coffin, one of them being from the Oddfellows, who held their lamented brother in very high esteem. Rev Mr Knowles was the officiating clergyman. Expressions of regret that one so young and promising should be cut off were heard on all sides. The parents have the sincere sympathy of their host of friends in their bereavement.

    DIED
    At the residence of her father, in Pakenham on the 2nd inst., Matilda, youngest daughter of Wm. Snedden, Esq., aged 15 years.
    She's gone to be an angel?
    But ah! our home is sad;
    This is the great sorrow
    That ever we have had.
    Her traces are around us
    Where'er we turn an eye;
    We can but bow to anguish
    And weep that she should die.
    Father in heaven, forgive us
    This wild and yearning grief;
    Our hearts are breaking for her?
    In pity send relief
    Teach us to bow before Thee,
    To say, "Thy will be done,"
    And to give us in meekness
    Our pride, our darling one.

    H.M. Snedden Was Well known Resident of Appleton District
    On Thursday night, Oct 5th, the whole community was shocked to hear of the sudden demise of Mr Herbert Mansfield Snedden which occured at the home of Mr Robert Barker, 8th line Ramsay, where Mr and Mrs Snedden and friends were spending the evening.
    He has recently remarked to friends that he felt better than he had for years, but about 8:45 p.m. he complained of not feeling very well, though the symptoms were not alarming. However in a few minutes, medical aid was summoned and though everything possible was done for him, he passed away in about half an hour, a slight hemorrhage of the brain having developed.
    Deceased, who was a son of the late Alexander Snedden, was born on september 6th, 1875, on the 7th line of Ramsay. In June 1899, he married Agnes B. Coxford of Blakeney, and they resided on the homestead for several years. Later they purchased the Wilson property on the Mississippi River, near Appleton.
    In religion Mr Snedden was a Presbyterian until Church Union in 1925, then he became a member of Memorial Park Church, Carleton Place.
    Mr Snedden is survived by his wife and two sons, Harold A. at home, and Herbert R. at Rosetown, Sask.
    He was a man highly esteemed for his many sterling qualities and when the intimation of his passing was received, deep regret was expressed by a host of friend. His genial, generous disposition, his patience and thoughtfulness of others, his kindly consideration for the poor, made him the centre of a very large circle of friends. "The best portion of a good man's life is his many, little nameless acts of kindness and love."
    The funeral was one of the largest ever witnessed in the community, took place on his many, October 8th, at 2 p.m. from his late residence.
    the service was conducted by Rev Donald Munro B.A. of Memorial Park Church and Rev Andrew McLauchlin B.A., B.D. of Trinity Church, Almonte and United church Appleton.
    Interment was made at the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay. The pallbearers were: Messrs Thomas Coxford, Herbert Coxford, Robert Barker, Frank J. Paul, Alex Cochran and Wilbert Cochrane.
    Along the many floral offerings testifying to the esteem in which deceased was held were wreaths from the family and Appleton friends and a spray from the A.F & A.M. the sympathy of the entire community goes out to the family in their bereavement

    Serious Accident
    We regret to have to report an unfortunate accident met with by David T. Snedden (son of Mr David Snedden, near Blakeney) on Friday last. He was riding home from the store of Mr Jas McDougall, Blakeney, with a parcel of nails. The horse was somewhat restless, and threw him. He was not hurt, and remounted, but when going down the hill at Mr Peter McDougall's the parcel dropped from his hand and frightened the horse, and he was again thrown. This time he fell heavily on his side against some boards and was very seriously injured. He was found there by Mrs McDougall, who quickly secured help, and he was conveyed to Mr McDougall's house, where he now lies. We trust the accident will not prove fatal, although we regret to say that but slight hopes of his recovery are entertained. He has been vomiting blood freely, and suffering acute pain. The unfortunate young man is well known in this town having been a clerk in Mr Hobblewhite's store for several years, and is popular with all who know him.
    LATER ?
    The young life went out to its Maker to-day (Thursday) at 12:30 a.m. The sad news will cause a profound feeling of sorrow among those acquainted with the circumstances, and the mourning ones will have whatever solace there be for such a loss in the sympathy of the whole community. It is a severe blow to the parents. Deceased was their eldest son, was but 22 years of age, and was fully fitted for the active duties of the calling he had chosen. He had just completed a course in a commercial college. Although of a retiring disposition, his exemplary conduct and geniality made for him many warm friends. The funeral takes place on Saturday afternoon.
