    ?b?Death Calls John Reid
?/b? As He Nears His 100th Birthday
Farmed In Scotland For Years Before Moving His Family To Canada
    Lived Under Five Kings
Had Masonic Apron That Once Belonged To Famous Bobbie Burns
Believed to have been the oldest resident in the Ottawa Valley, with his hundredth birthday due on June 11th of this year. Mr John Reid of Almonte, died on Sunday last at the home of his son Thomas J. Reid. He had been in failing health for some months. The late Mr Reid was born on June 11th, 1831, in the historic Perthshire and for many years he farmed on a large scale at Hilton-of-Aldie, near Kincross, famous in the stories of Scott and the poems of Burns, and close to Loch Leven Castle, the place of imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots. He had a leasehold on part of the Scottish estate of Lord Lansdowne, once Governor General of Canada, and on which estate Mr Reid's forebears had lived for 650 years. He was proud of his clan and of the heraldic motto of the clan "Dum Spiro Spero," which translated means "While I breathe I hope." The three major events in Mr Reid's life by a peculiar circumstance all occurred on the 11th day of June; on that date he was born, again on that date was he married and when in 1881 he said goodbye forever to his beloved Scotland it was on June 11th. He had great confidence in the possibilities of this new land and with his wife he brought out his five young sons and one daughter; his confidence was not misplaced; the members of his family all prospered and their talents were splendid contributions to the communities in which they settled. Mr Reid enjoyed the unique distinction of having lived under four British rulers ? George IV., Queen Victoria, Edward VII., and George V. He was proud of the fact that he had been a Mason for 71 years and prouder still of one of his most cherished possessions, the Masonic apron once owned by Burns, the Scottish bard. Mr Reid was an enthusiastic Conservative and followed the fortunes of that Party during his long life time. He was the oldest man in Lanark County to cast a ballot in the last Federal election, going alone to the polls to register a vote for the sitting Mr T.A. Thompson. Mr Reid's faculties remained unimpaired to the end and in his declining years when he could not be so active as of yore he loved to read the newspapers and latterly the radio was a favourite with him. His wife, who was Catherine Haldane of Dunfermline, and his daughter, predeceased him a number of years ago, but his five sons remained. They are John, Robert and Andrew, of Beverly, Mass.; Alexander, of Arnprior, and Thomas of Almonte. He also leaves 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral which was private, was held on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. Services at the home and grave, in the Auld Kirk Cemetery were conducted by Rev J.R. MacCrimmon. The pallbearers were five sons: Thomas J. of Almonte, Alexander of Arnprior and Messrs. John Francis, Robert and Andrew S. of Beverley, Mass., and a nephew Haldane Reid of Arnprior.

Family/Spouse: Catherine Haldane. Catherine was born in 1839 in Fife, Fifeshire, Scotland; died in Mar 1907 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

?b?Almonte Loses Fine Citizen In Death Of Thomas Reid?/b?
Following a lengthy illness, Thomas James Reid died at his Union Street home in Almonte on Tuesday morning, Nov 15th in his 86th year. for many years he had been a leading business man of the town and during the long period of his retirement he continued to be active in public affairs, serving on the Council, the board of stewards of his church and helping to further the aims of other worthy organizations.

    Born In Scotland
Mr Reid was born on the Aldie estate, Kincross-shire, Scotland, Dec 17th, 1869, a son of John Reid and his wife, Catherine Haldane. He left Scotland with his parents, four brothers and one sister in 1881 and the family located in Almonte. He and his brother, Alexander now of Arnprior, were in business together for some years in a store opposite the present location of the O'Brien Theatre. They conducted a men's clothing business and when they sold out, Alex decided to open a similar store in Arnprior and the late Mr Reid bought the block where the Stedman store is now located on Mill Street and carried on a clothing business there for many years. He retired as a merchant 37 years ago leaving a reputation as a good businessman who carried an excellent stock and satisfied his customer to an unusual degree.

    Liked to Curl
During the period of his retirement, which was a lengthy one, he took an active interest in many things including properties which he own in town, two of which were very good blocks in the business section, which he disposed of some years ago. He was an ardent curler, enjoying the game to the full as most Scotsmen do. A faithful member of the United Church, Mr Reid served on the Board of Stewards and for some years was a member of the Town Council. He married Agnes Jane Drummond who predeceased him seven years ago. There was no family. He leaves two brother, Alexander of Arnprior and Andrew S. Reid of Wenham, Mass., both of whom attended the funeral this Thursday. Legion's Good Friend
In 1947, the local branch of the Canadian Legion approached the Town Council to finance it in the purchase of the Montreal Bank residence on Bridge Street, now the Legion Memorial Home. This fine, big, stone building had been used as the home of the local bank manager for a great many years, but as time passed and big residences passed out of favour, a smaller house was purchased by the Bank on Union Street for its representatives here. The Bank on being approached by the Legion, agreed to sell it on more favourable terms than would be accorded any other prospective purchaser. But the Town Council of that day, turned down the pleas of the returned men. On hearing this, Mr Reid, who no longer was a councillor, approached a friend who was a Legionnaire with an offer to finance the venture. This word was passed on to the president of the Legion, Mr Arthur Smith, and the two interviewed Mr Reid with the result that he agreed to back the deal on most generous terms. In a year or so he wrote off the indebtedness, thereby converting his action into something that was practically a donation. Thereby he earned the never ending gratitude of the veterans and it was a satisfaction to him that the organization prospered and did much good work in the community.

    Honoured By Legion
He was made an honourary life member of the Legion and in the main lobby of the fine hall, opposite the great brass plaque that bears the names of those who died in two world wars is a smaller bronze plate on which is engraved this inscription:
Erected in honour of Thomas Reid Esq., whose generous contributions toward the purchase of this memorial home will always be remembered by the Almonte Branch, Canadian Legion, B.E.S.L., 1948." Mr Reid was a very kindly man and he practised charity in the most commendable manner ? without ostentation and, in fact on a strict understanding with those he helped that if they made public his good deeds he would withdraw the assistance. He was a modest, self effacing person and it was only after great pressure that the Legion could get him to be present for the unveiling of the plaque in his honour.

The funeral was held this Thursday afternoon from the Comba Funeral Home to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Rev J. Ray Anderson, pastor of the Almonte United Church, conducted the services. Members of the local Legion Branch formed a guard of honour as the casket was borne from the funeral parlours to the hearse. Pallbearers were: Dr. A.H. Reid and A.J. Farmer of Arnprior; Bon Boland and W.K. Boland of Pembroke; Austin Symington and George Elliott of Almonte.

Thomas married Agnes Jane Drummond on 25 Mar 1903 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Agnes (daughter of Peter Drummond, Jr. and Jane Dunlop) was born on 2 May 1872 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 20 Nov 1948 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 22 Nov 1948 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Notes:

    Died:
Wife of the late Barry George Newman, devoted mother to Duncan (Melody), Joanna (John) and Charlotte (Bruce). Much loved Granny to Patrick, Nicholas, Robert, Andrew, Peter and Robin. Predeceased by her sister Elaine Roy. Private family service. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Dans La Rue.
Mum was small town royalty. She grew up in a frontier mill town in the Ottawa Valley, the daughter of a shopkeeper. After the war she set out for Europe with a friend, travelling by boat and train taking in the sights. Later, armed with a high school diploma and a typing course, she took an apartment in Ottawa. For the next 10 years she witnessed history, working with three prominent figures of the day.
She was personal assistant to Duncan MacTavish, a lawyer, senator and advisor to governments.
She worked for Paul Martin Senior, deputy prime minister and minister for health who brought in universal health care. Mum remembers discussions about the legislation to make seat belts mandatory in cars, prompted by the deaths of movie stars (and Duncan MacTavish). She was also present for sensitive talks with the Russians at the United Nations. She would fly to New York in a Canadian military plane, with her steel filing cabinet and typewriter, and set up shop in the Beekman Tower. She recalls going out on the town with the pilots, eating lunch at the Automat and enjoying New York in simpler more glamourous days.
She worked for Mohammed Ikramulla, High Commissioner for Pakistan and one of the fathers of Partition. Joan took him and his family across Canada on the famous Vista train, visiting the mosques with ceremony. When Ikramulla was impressed with a desk in a scene in a Clark Gable movie, Joan had the job to contact Hollywood and buy it.
After that time with diplomats and politicians, she married an engineer, Barry Newman, a Cambridge graduate who was a young full professor at McGill University in the field of aeronautics. In 1961 they bought the house in Montreal West that housed the family and that Joan remained in until 4 days before her death.
Joan is remembered as a strong personality, charismatic, well turned-out. Many people enjoyed long chats with her on her porch over the years.
And, for those who are curious about longevity, she lived until age 95 with no major health problems even though she had smoked when it was popular, never exercised, and loved brown sugar.

Family/Spouse: Barry George Newman. Barry was born in 1926; died in 2000. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
