    ALLISTER (AL) MURRAY INGERSOLL - Flags at Victory Memorial School are at half mast to honor a man whose genuine caring and concern made an impression on generations of Ingersoll students. Allister (Al) Murray, principal of the school from 1942-1977 and member of the Oxford County Board of Education for four years, died Tuesday. He was 77.

    As a teacher and principal, Murray Murray demanded respect and got it said Gail MacKay, himself a former principal of the school. MacKay was a student in Murray's Grade B class in 1953-54 and remembers him as someone who could show great sensitivity to a child with problems. Murray saw the school change from one of two Ingersoll public schools to the senior public school It is today.

    He was deeply involved in his community and was one of the founding members of the Ingersoll Lion's Club in 1939. Murray was the last remaining charter member.

    Murray served a term as president and was instrumental in the Lion's sponsorship of safety patrols in Ingersoll. He became a life member in 1984. He was also a dedicated Mason and will be honored at a Masonic memorial service this evening at 7:30 under the auspices of King Hiram Lodge No. 37 A.F. and A.M.

    Murray is survived by his wife Marion, son Harry and his wife Shirley, son John, daughter Ruth and grandchildren Lindsey and Michael. Visitation will be at McBeath Funeral Home today from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lonnie Atkinson officiating. Donations can be made to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation or St. Paul's Church memorial fund.
