    A Healthy Neighbourhood
    Pakenham township must be an exceedingly healthy neighbourhood, if we judge by the facts contained in the following item, which has been kindly handed in to us by a resident of the above township: Within the compass of a mile on the 9th line of Pakenham there reside ten old settlers whose combined aged tote astonishing aggregate of 828 years - average of over the four score. As we know our readers will be interested to learn who the parties are, we give the names and ages as follows: ....... Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wood, aged 87 and 78 respectively, emigrated from Lanarkshire the same year as Mr. Waddell. At time of writing Mrs. Wood is laid up with what it is feared will prove a fatal illness.

    P.S. - Since writing, the above we learn that Mrs. Wood died on Sunday. During her long residence in this district the deceased lady, by her many excellent qualities, won for herself a very large circle of warm friends, one and all of whom will receive with deep sorrow the news of her demise. The bereaved ones have our sincere sympathy.

    Mrs Buchanan
    Death claimed a life at Cedar Hill at Cedar Hill on Saturday when Margaret Wood, relict of J.W. Buchanan, was called to the great beyond. The deceased had been in failing health for the past six months, owing to a gradual declension of her physical powers, and the end came when her strength had gone. She was a daughter of the late Walter Wood of Pakenham township, who died about eight years ago, her mother being a daughter of the late Peter Young, of Ramsay. the deceased was married about thirtyfive years ago to Mr Buchanan, who was then a resident of Perth, but afterwards removed to Utica, N.Y. where he died over twenty five years ago. After his death Mrs Buchanan returned to Cedar Hill and has since lived with her brother, Mr Wm Y. Wood. four children, two sons and two daughters, were born to Mr and Mrs Buchanan ? William, who lives at Cedar Hill, and John, who is also at Cedar Hill at present, and Mary and Aggie, who live with their aunt, Mrs Edwards, at Ottawa. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon to the eighth line cemetery, and was largely attended by friends and relatives who assembled to do honour to the dead. The pallbearers were the two sons of the deceased, Messrs John and William Buchanan, and four of her nephews, Messrs Taylor and Edwards, of Ottawa, and Jas and John Wood. Mrs Buchanan, who was seventy years of age, was the eldest of her father's family of six daughters and one son, and her death is the first break among the children. The others are Mrs Jas Barker, Ramsay; Mrs Taylor, Ottawa; Miss Janet with her brother; William Y., of Cedar Hill; Mrs Edward and Miss Jane, Ottawa. The deceased was a woman of quiet disposition, possessed of a sterling character and ready helpfulness, which won for her love and respect. The relatives and friends have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.

    Thursday morning word came to friends in Blakeney that Mrs Samuel Taylor of Ottawa, sister of the late Wm Y. Wood, of Cedar Hill, had died suddenly. This was all the more surprising as a letter received from her the evening before reported her as in usual health. Mrs Taylor was one of a family of seven, four of whom have died within the last ten months ? Jean, last January; Ann (Mrs Edwards) in August; a brother, William Y. Wood of Cedar Hill, in September, and now Mary (Mrs Taylor). The body is being brought to Almonte and the funeral will leave the C.P.R. station upon the arrival of the morning local from Ottawa on Friday for the eighth line cemetery, where interment takes place.

    Mrs James Barker
    Mrs James Barker died on Friday, at age of 37. She had been in the best of health until a month ago and was very active. Her maiden name was Agnes Wood, and she was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Walter Wood of the 9th con of Pakenham. She was the last of the family. Forty-seven years ago she was married from the home of her parents to Mr James Barker of the 9th line of Ramsay and there she lived until her death. Seven years ago her husband died, and she continue to live in the old home, cared for by the stepson, Mr Alex Barker, and his wife. The funeral took place from the old homestead on Sunday afternoon to the Presbyterian cemetery on the t line of Ramsay where interment was made beside her late husband. The funeral services were conducted by Rev D.H. Hodges and the pallbearers were: Messrs James Wood, W.J. Graham, John Thom, W.A. Snedden, John McGill and Wm Buchanan. The funeral was friends who mourn her loss.

    Miss Janet Wood, well known in Ramsay and Pakenham died on Wednesday at the home of her nephew, Mr Walter J. Wood, of the Ninth Line of Pakenham. She was in her 82nd year. Until about a fortnight before her death she had enjoyed excellent health; however she was able to be around until Sunday morning when she had a paralytic stroke, and she remained unconscious until her death on Wednesday. Miss Wood was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Walter Wood, of the Ninth Line of Pakenham. Her father died abut a quarter of a century ago, and her mother died some years before that. After her father's death she lived with her brother Mr William Y. Wood, in Pakenham, but for the last fourteen years she had resided with her nephew Walter. She was much loved and respected and lived a most useful life. She was a devout member of the Blakeney Presbyterian church. The funeral took place on Thursday from the home of Mr Walter Wood on the Ninth Line to the Eighth Line of Ramsay Presbyterian cemetery. There was a large attendance of friends. The service at the house was conducted by Rev W.T. McKenzie, of Pakenham. The pallbearers were: Messrs Robert Fulton, Thomas Fulton, James McCann, John Deugo, John Thompson, and Milton Lindsay. The late Miss Wood is survived by one sister, Mrs J. Barker, Sr., of Blakeney.

    The death took place Friday afternoon of Mrs Edwards, relict of the late William Edwards, aged 64 years, who had been almost a lifelong resident of the city. She had been ailing for some time with a complication of ills and during the last fourteen weeks had been able to be down stairs only twice so that the end was not unexpected The late Mrs. Edwards was a daughter of Walter Wood and was born Pakenham though she came to Ottawa as a girl. Her husband predeceased her thirteen years ago and she is survived by two sons, W.P. and J.M. Edwards. who lived with her at Queen street and who are engaged in the cartage business. A sister Mrs S.J. Taylor, and two nieces, Mrs A. Buchanan and Mrs. P.R. Hamblin, also resided with her. Mrs. James Barker of Ramsay and Miss J. Wood, of Pakenham, are sisters and Mr. W.Y. Wood, of Pakenham is a brother. Mrs Edwards was a member of Bank street Presbyterian church and during her long residence in the city had made a wide circle of friends. By all, she was held in the highest esteem and her death has aroused genuine sympathy. The funeral will take place this morning at 7.30 o'clock from ther family residence to the Union station and thence to Almonte where the body will be interred in the Eighth line cemetery beside the grave of her husband.

    Many friends from town and country assembled at the C.P.R. depot Monday morning to pay their last respects to the body of Mrs William Edwards (nee Anna Wood) of Ottawa, whose death occurred on Friday last after a long illness from a complication of diseases. The deceased lady was born in Pakenham township 64 years ago and was daughter of the late Walter Wood. When quite a young girl she moved to Ottawa and there married Mr Edwards, who predeceased her some thirteen years ago. Two sons ? Messrs W. B. and J.M. Edwards of Ottawa survive and also a sister. Mrs S.J. Taylor, and two nieces. Mrs A. Buchanan and Mrs P.R. Hamblin, who resided with her. Mr J.Y. Wood of Pakenham is a brother and Mrs James Barker of Ramsay and Miss J. Wood of Pakenham are sisters. Deceased was well known to many in this vicinity and her death will be regretted.

    Ann married William Edwards in 1874.     After an illness extending over a period of four months death came as a happy release to Jean Erskine Wood of Cedar Hill of Friday last. Deceased was the youngest sister of Mr Wm Y. Wood of Cedar Hill and had lived with her nephew, Mr Water J. Wood. Mrs James Barker, Ramsay, Mrs Samuel Taylor, Ottawa, and Mrs Edwards, Ottawa, and Miss Janet at home, are sisters of deceased. Another sister, Margaret (Mrs Buchanan) died about five years ago. Deceased was 63 years of age and was much respected by all who knew her. The funeral took place on Sunday last and was largely attended. The late Walter Wood was the father of deceased and Mary Young, sister of the late Robert and Peter Young, was her mother.

    That peer of all tragedians ? Death ? last week made Pakenham township the stage of his fell activities. Two men living within a short distance one another, both possessed of these peculiar qualities which make life valuable and death regrettable, were called beyond the mists to the heaven we call Rest. On Saturday William Y. Wood, of the 9th line, who had been suffering from a spinal trouble, was relieved from suffering, having lived on this earth 58 years. He was a man known not so widely as well, famed more for his manhood than ambitious desire. He was a son of the late Walter Wood and had been twice married. His first wife, Miss Lizzie Smith of Blakeney, predeceased him some twenty-five years, leaving two sons, Walter and John. To his second wife, Miss Bella Moore, were born five children ? Misses Minnie and Maggie, at home, Allan, Willie, and one child which died in infancy. Mr Wood's death is the third that has taken place in his father's family within eight months. One sister, Jean, died in Janaury, and another, Ann, in August, and now Mr Wood. Three sisters survive, Mrs Jas Barker, Ramsay; Mrs S. Taylor, Ottawa, and Miss Janet at home. Pakenham township has lost a good citizen.

    William married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Smith in 1878.     Mr William D. Buchanan
    Impressive tribute was paid to the memory of William D. Buchanan of Pakenham Township by a large circle of friends and relatives who attended his funeral on Saturday afternoon, Mr Buchanan passed away on Thursday morning, Dec 5, and was in his 70th year. Rev H.A. Turner, pastor of Zion United Church of which deceased was a valued member officiated. The funeral was held from the home of his son-in-law, Mr Howard Lowry and interment was in the family plot in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were Jno Dowdall, William Lawson. John Lawson, Stewart Boal, Ernest Miller and Wm Y. Wood, Mr Buchanan was born in Utica, N.Y., the son of John Buchanan and his wife Margaret Wood. Following the death of his father, he came to Canada at the age of three years with his mother and made his home on the 9th line with his uncle Mr Wm Wood On reaching manhood, he took up farming and followed that occupation all his life. in 1894 he married Miss Elizabeth Reid of Pakenham and they settled on the 7th line of Pakenham. Mrs Buchanan passed away in 1932, of a family of three, two survive, one son John R. of Syracuse, N.Y. and one daughter Lucy, Mrs Howard Lowry of Pakenham, with whom he made his home, for the past few years. A daughter died in infancy. One sister, Mrs David Georgeson of Ottawa, also survives. Many beautiful floral tributes testified to the esteem in which deceased was held. Among them was a piece from the Cedar Hill W.I. Present at the funeral were his son John R. of Syracuse, his sister, Mrs David Georgeson of Ottawa and his nephew, W.E. Hamblin, Detroit Mich.

    William married Elizabeth Sophia Reid in 1894.     Very sad indeed was the death of Walter Wood, son of the late William Wood of Cedar Hill, who died at his residence in Cedar Hill, on Friday morning after a lingering Illness. The late Mr. Wood had been in poor health for some time, and underwent an operation about a year ago, but never fully recovered. There survive a family of six children to mourn the loss, the eldest being just 15 years of age, namely: Annie, William, Robert, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Jack. His wife predeceased him about two years ago. Mr. Wood was very well known in this vicinity, being a councillor for the township of Pakenham, and also a very prosperous farmer, and highly esteemed by all who knew him. There are three brothers and two sisters of the deceased namely Jack Wood, Allan and Willie, Mrs. Stuart Boal and Annie Wood. The funeral, which took place on Sunday from his late residence and was conducted by Rev. W.T. MeKenzie, was one of largest ever seen in the Cedar Hill community. The pallbearers were: Robt. Fulton, Thomas Fulton, J . Deugo, J. McCann, John Thomson, Milton Lindsay. Interment was made in the Presbyterian cemetery, Pakenham. Mr. Jack Wood, uncle of the children, intends living with them for a while.

    Walter married Margaret Naomi Aikins in 1904.     Mr. John B. Wood
    The death occurred in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Aug. 10 of Mr. John B. Wood in his 68th year. Mr. Wood was born in Pakenham Township July 26, 1880, the son of the late William Y, Wood and his wife Elizabeth Smith. The late Mr. Wood spent several years in Moosomin, Sask., before returning in 1920 to take over the management of his deceased brother's farm. During his active years he took a keen interest in the affairs of the community. His kindly disposition and genial nature won for him a host of friends. Ten years ago he retired from active life disposing of his farm to his nephew Mr. Lloyd Dickson with whom he made his home until the time of his death. Mr. Wood had been in failing health for some years, but only recently was confined to his bed. The deceased is survived by his nieces and nephews namely. Mrs. Lloyd Dickson (Annie); Wm. Y. of Pakenham; Robert of Smiths Falls; Mrs. R. A. Stuart (Elizabeth) of Sudbury; Margaret and Jack of Ottawa. In addition are two half-sisters and brothers, Mrs. J. Deugo (Minnie); Mrs. Stewart Boal (Maggie); Wm., all of Pakenham and Allan of Indian Head, Sask. The funeral service held at his late residence on Tues., Aug. 12 was largely attended. Rev. H. A. Turner officiated. Many beautiful floral tributes were received. The pallbearers were Messrs John Deugo, Hiram McCann, E. J. Rose, Milton Lindsay, Thos. Fulton and James Connery.

    ?/b?Mrs. John S. Deugo (Mary Wood), who had been in declining health for the past six years, passed away on Monday morning, May 14th, at the Ontario Hospital, Kingston. She was born in Pakenham Township on November 20th, 1886 and was the eldest daughter of William Wood and Isabel Moore. In March 1936, she married John S. Deugo, who predeceased her May 1st, 1955. They lived in Kinburn for some years, later moving to the Cedar Hill district. The service was held from Comba Funeral Horne, Almonte, and was conducted by Rev. Mr. Henley. Interment was in St. Mark's Cemetery, Pakenham. She leaves to mourn Allan of Indian Head, Sask; William of Pakenham; Margaret, Mrs. Stewart Boal, predeceased her last December. Pallbearers were Messrs. William Wood, Cobden, Edward Wood Clarence and Harold Boale, Lloyd Dickson, Pakenham and Robert Cochrane of Almonte.

    Mrs. Stuart Boal
    Following an illness of two weeks, Mrs. Stuart Boal passed away in an Ottawa hospital, in her 67th year, on Wednesday, Dec 21st. Mrs. Boal's maiden name was Maggie Wood, and she was a daughter of the late William Wood and his wife, Isabella Moore, and was born on the 9th line of Pakenham Township. She was educated in the local schools, and 43 years ago married Stuart Boal and they farmed in the Cedar Hill section of Pakenham Township. Mr. Boal predeceased her in August 1949, and since that time Mrs. Boal lived with her daughter, Mrs. Jos Melanson, in Almonte. Left to mourn are three sons and one daughter, Clarence of Cedar Hill, Kathleen, Mrs. Jos Melanson of Almonte; Howard of Almonte and Harold of Cedar Hill. and also two brothers, William Wood of Pakenham and Allan Wood of Indian Head, Sask.; one sister, Minnie, Mrs. John Deugo of Kingston. Two half-brothers, Walter and Jack Wood, predeceased her. Mrs. Boal was a member of Zion United Church and of Cedar Hill W.I. The funeral, which was largely attended, was held on December 24th, from the Comba Funeral Home, at 2.00 p.m. Rev J. Ray Anderson officiated. The pallbearers were Messrs Wilbert Morphy, John Smithson, John Dowdall, Lorne Melanson, Lloyd Dickson and Ted Wood. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery.

    Margaret married Stuart Boal in 1912.     Peacefully at Willowdate Retirement Centre, Smiths Falls on Thursday, June 25, 2009 in his 90th year. Beloved husband of the late Eleanor Giles. Much loved father of Donna Timmins (the late Alvin), Shirley Madden, (Ray), Patricia Albert (Peter), Bonnie Armstrong (Cliff) and David Boal. Proud and loving Grandfather of 9 grandchildren and great-grandfather (GGP) of 14 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by brother Clarence (the late Marion), twin brother Harold (the late Vera) and sister Kathleen Melanson (the late Joe). He will also be greatly missed by brother-in-law Willard Giles, and many nieces and nephews of the extended Boal and Giles families, and his special "Card Playing" friends. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff at Willowdale Retirement Centre for all their love and care. Friends may call at the Almonte Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 154 Elgin Street on Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Monday at 11 am, followed by cremation.
