Mrs P. Naismith Dies in Ramsay
Aged Lady Had Only Been Ailing for the Last Two Months
Mrs Peter Naismith died at her home on the ninth line of Ramsay, on Sunday morning, She was 81 years of age, and had been in poor health for the past two months. Mrs Naismith, whose maiden name was Catherine Gilmour, belonged to a pioneer family of Ramsay Township. She was a daughter of the late William Gilmour and his wife, Helen Burns, settlers from Scotland, who made their home on a farm on the outskirts of Almonte. Sixty years ago she was married to Mr Peter Naismith and their wedded life was an ideal one. He predeceased her in 1914. On both sides of the house they were widely connected. They had a family of eleven children all of whom reached maturity. They are: Peter and Albert on the homestead in Ramsay; John of Calgary; James of Vermilion, Alta; Welland, of Exparto, Calif; William, of Denver, Col; Lawrence, of Almonte, and Maggie on the homestead. Robert, who resided at Calgary, served in the Great War and was killed overseas. Jennie died in 1914 and Jessie, Mrs Wm Steele, in 1917. Mrs Naismith was a member of the Auld Kirk on the eighth line of Ramsay, as a girl and continued as a member of St Andrew's, now Bethany United Church until her death. She was of the finest type of the pioneer stock, always ready, despite her busy home life, to render help to neighbours and friends when needed. She was one of the best known ladies in the district, and this was evidenced by the very large assembly of mourners at her funeral on Tuesday when she was laid to rest in the Auld Kirk Cemetery beside the remains of her husband. Rev J.R. MacCrimmon conducted the service and the pallbearers were old neighbours: Messrs Andrew Cochran, Wm Paul, Wm Phillips, Greville Toshack, Alex Barker and Jack McGill. Besides her children and grandchildren she leaves to mourn her loss two brothers, Messrs William and Robert Gilmour of Ramsay. There was an impressive number of beautiful floral tributes.

Catherine married Peter Naismith on 17 Oct 1867 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Peter (son of Peter Naismith and Jane Carswell) was born on 19 May 1842 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 14 Jul 1914 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 17 Jul 1914 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. The Late Mrs. Steele
The angel of death which hovers over humanity descended to this community last week and claimed the bright young life of Jessie Gilmour Naismith, beloved wife of Mr. Wm. Steele, of Claysmore, Alta., at the early age of forty-seven years. Deceased, who was the eldest daughter of the late Peter Naismith and Catherine Gilmour, was born in Ramsay township and spent her life until her marriage to Mr. Steele about nine years ago, when she went west to reside at Claysmore, Alta. About for years ago she was taken ill with a serious form of paralysis and came east to get the best medical attention and loving care but all was of no avail and death released her from all suffering on Friday. The late Mrs Steele was of a bright cheerful disposition, making the most of life although it had been darkened for years by suffering and affliction, all of which was borne with Christian patience and resignation. She leaves to mourn her husband (who was with her when she passed away), a little daughter, Kathleen, her mother, one sister and seven brothers. These are Margaret and Albert at home; Peter of Ramsay; Wm. of Denver, Col; Welland, of San Francisco, Cal.; John, Edmonton, Alta.; Jas, Heward, Sask,; Lawrence, of Morse, Sask., all of whom have the deepest sympathy of many friends in their sad bereavement. The funeral which took place from Mr. Albert Naismith's residence on the 9th line on Sunday afternoon, was very largely attended. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Turner of Montreal, in the absence of Rev. S.G. Brown, interment being made in the 8th line cemetery.

Jessie married William Mostyn Steele in 1907. William was born in 1868 in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 14 Jul 1957 in Vermilion, Lloydminster Census Division, Alberta, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

This community was suddenly overcast with gloom when the angel of death claimed the bright young life of Jean Carswell, second daughter of the late Peter Naismith of the 9th line Ramsay, at the early age of 37 years and 4 months. Deceased was of a king, cheerful disposition, making the most of life although at intervals for many years past it had been darkened by suffering and affliction, all of which had been borne with Christian patience and resignation. A few weeks ago the late Miss Naismith was taken ill with pleurisy, which, with other complications, proved too much for the already weakened body and death released her from all suffering on Friday morning. Sudden Passing Of Tobe Naismith Widely Mourned
Death of Popular Citizen Comes As Great Shock To This District
Sad and sudden was the death this Thursday morning at the Rosamond Memorial Hospital of Lawrence Naismith, more familiarly known to his many friends at "Tobe." Mr Naismith had been indisposed for the last few weeks but was going about up to Monday afternoon when he took a turn for the worse and was confined to bed. By Tuesday noon his condition had grown so serious that he was rushed to the hospital and an Ottawa doctor was summoned to perform an emergency operation. This disclosed that Mr Naismith could not recover and the announcement came as a distinct shock to the whole town and district. There was no more active, cheerful or kindly man in Almonte than "Tobe" Naismith. His associations formed as representative in this district for General Motors Limited, of Oshawa, and a patron of sports and athletics brought him many contacts which added to his wide popularity. His passing is a great loss to a town which has suffered many similar losses in the last few years and which can ill afford the removal of such citizens.
    An Active Life
The late Lawrence Naismith was born at the homestead, ninth line of Ramsay, of February 19th, 1879, and was 56 years old at the time of his sudden passing. He was a son of the late Peter Naismith and his wife, the former Catherine Gilmour, and attended school at Bennies Corners. Going West in 1898, Mr Naismith settled in Wawanesa, Man., where he operated an insurance business until 1908 when he moved to Morse, Sask. There he established a hardware, real estate and insurance business. While in Morse he served for some time as a member of the council and Board of Education, In 1922 Mr Naismith sold out his western interests and returned to the old home town of Almonte, where he formed a connection with General Motors and was a most successful representative up to the time of his death.
    President Bowling Club
Deceased was a member of Bethany United Church and a life member of Morse Lodge, A.F & A.M. and a member of Granite Chapter No 61. Since coming to Almonte he served on the Board of Education and several other bodies. He was president of the Lawn Bowling Club at the time of his death and was an enthusiastic supporter of all lines of sport, especially baseball and hockey. The late Mr Naismith leaves a wife, formerly Miss Helen Snedden of Ramsay, and a daughter Miss Helen of Almonte. Brothers and sisters surviving are Peter of Almonte, Welland of Asparto, Cal; William of Denver, Col Jack and James in Saskatchewan and Albert and Margaret on the homestead. One brother Robert was killed in France during the war. Two sisters (Jessie) Mrs Wm Steele and Jean died a number of years ago. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock from his late residence, Church street, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, under the auspices of Morse Lodge A.F. & A.M. Morse, Sask. Officers of Mississippi Lodge, Almonte, will have charge. The sympathy of a host of friends in Almonte and district goes out to the bereaved wife and daughters.

Great Tribute Paid Ramsay Farmer At His Funeral Sunday Afternoon
This part of Lanark County lost one of its most popular and successful citizens on Friday, May 9th, in the death of Albert George Naismith who died in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, in his 58th year, after a short illness. Mr Naismith was born on the homestead, Ninth Line of Ramsay, in sight of Almonte, a son of the late Peter Naismith and his wife, Catherine Gilmour. A short time after his father's death, he acquired the farm which is a very good one and which he continued to improve in every day during his all too short lifetime. Thirty-two years ago he married Olive May Paul who survives together with two sons and two daughters, namely, Robert of Ramsay, William at home; Mrs Wm Toop (Elsie) of Ottawa and Mrs William Endersby (Betty) of Toronto. In his own immediate family there are eight ? James of Vermillion, Alberta; Welland of Esparato, Calf.; John of Calgary; Miss Margaret at home. Deceased ? Peter, Lawrence (Tobe) Jessie (Mrs Wm Steele) and Jean. Mr Naismith's death came as a great shock and sorrow to a wide circle of friends. Whether he felt well during the winter no one knows outside of his immediate family because he wasn't a complainer. He was the jolly, jaunty type of man whom everyone likes to meet, especially those who felt down a little themselves. He was always cheerful, well informed and a good conversationalist. He knew his business as a dairy farmer, specializing in Ayshires, and it was a pleasure to hear him talk on the subject of agriculture in which he was most interested. Some years ago, in addition to running his farm with which the two boys were associated, "Ab" decided to take on the district agency for the Massey-Harris Co. His warehouse was next the Gazette office and the staff of this newspaper never had a better of more congenial neighbour. He was eminently successful in his work as an agent but his heart was in the farm. he had it in mind to turn the agency over the elder boy an when he declared he would rather farm Albert gave up the sales business with no regret at all. He took little active interest in public or semi public affairs. His heart was at home because he was a great family man. He loved to talk with the boys and girls of the immediate circle and he welcomed the friends who passed the gate and traversed the one lane up to his home. He was a director of North Lanark Agricultural Society for a few years but outside of that he attended strictly to his own affairs. He was Conservative in politics. The funeral of the late Mr Naismith, held last Sunday afternoon was one of the largest ever seen in Lanark County. When the head of the cortege reached the turn to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, at MacDonald's service station, the tail of the sad procession was still coming out his gate about two miles distant. Services were conducted at the home and graveside by Rev H.C. Wolfraim, pastor of the Almonte United Church. Pallbearers were Robt Toshack, Jas Steele, Peter Syme, Melville Paul, Clifford Rivington and Charles Black, the latter from Carleton Place. As might be expected, there was a profusion of floral offerings from organizations and individuals. It is no exaggeration to say that the death of Albert Naismith at a comparatively early age is one of those sad things that mortals have to contend with in this strange life. He was full of energy, cheerfulness and good-fellowship and had attained a position in his career where he could sit back and rest on the oars while the boys carried on. One of them was on a farm on his own a short distance away and the other was at home. But this rest after toll was not to be. Mr Naismith will be sorely missed by all who knew him. There were many at the funeral from adjacent towns and Ottawa, and Mr and Mrs Sam McKee and son, Don Don McKee and Mrs Porterfield from Toronto.

Albert married Olive May Paul in 1919. Olive (daughter of William Paul and Christena Porterfield) was born on 31 May 1895 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 11 Feb 1985 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
