    Notes:

    ROBERT DUNCAN

Robert Duncan was born near Almonte Ontario, December 7, 1854. His parents, James and Elizabeth Duncan, had a family of eight boys and three girls. Robert was the eldest.
As money was scarce Robert was obliged to leave home in his early teens to make his way in the world. Equipped with a team of horses and a sleigh he found work in logging camps along the Petawawa and Mississippi Rivers. Wages were a dollar a day. In the spring of each year he came back to help his father with the farm work. He would go back to the "shanty" as the camps were called, for the winter months.
In the spring of 1878 he and some other young fellows decided to go West. They left Almonte on May 5th and travelled by train and boat to Emerson and finally to Winnipeg. They worked there for the summer. He told of getting his wagon, with a load, stuck in the Red River mud of what is now main street. The load was removed from the wagon but even then the wagon had to be taken apart to free itself. Having met some men who had been farther west, Robert decided on their advice to go too. The result was that he filed on a parcel of land the west half of 12-3-12. This land was owned and operated in recent years by his only son James Hamilton Duncan until his death, November 1972 in Pilot Mound. Robert then went back to Ontario logging camps for the winter.
In the spring of 1879 James Duncan gave his eldest son, Robert a team of horses, a wagon and provisions for the trip west. Again he went to Emerson and then drove west along the Boundart Commission Trail to his homestead near Pilot Mound. This 100-mile trek was completed on May 29. Some grain was planted and a log house was built that summer. The remains of this pioneer dwelling exist on the present farm-site. This log house is a very special one. In 1879 there was not a minister or a church in which to conduct divine services. A meeting was held in Robert Duncan's log house to organize the first Sunday School. The next year, 1880, a meeting was held there to organize the Goudney School district. Until then the community was identified only by their post office, Preston, about three miles west of the present town of Pilot Mound.
In 1880 Robert Duncan and William Butchart (who was later to marry Robert's sister, Margaret Jane) bought a horse powered threshing machine. They threshed most of the grain in the settlement that fall and winter as this was one of the first threshing machines in the area. In those days the harvested grain was stacked, pending threshing operations so that work on the land could continue until freeze-up.
Robert Duncan returned home in the spring of 1881, returning to Pilot Mound in June with his bride, Ellen MacPherson Hamilton. The young bride could hardly visualize the ruggedness of the new country she was coming to, in comparison with the relatively gently and settled Ottawa Valley countryside which had been her home from birth. On the last leg of their trip from Emerson to the homestead, the young couple enjoyed the warm hospitality of the Mennonite homes as they passed through their communities. At last they reached the end of the hundred miles and arrived in the Goudney District. That summer the grass was so tall that even the cows seemed lost. When Ellen opened her kitchen door she could hear the cows mooing and running towards her but all she could see above the tall grass was their heads and tails.
"Bear stories are always interesting, especially when they have the added interest of being true. One day when Robert was harvesting a field of oats with his three-horse binder he saw a bear coming towards him. At the same time a neighborhood "character" an old chap who loved to hunt and fish, and who dropped in frequently to visit the Duncans arrived on the scene. Unfortunately his gun was not powerful enough to reach the bear from his distance. Robert unhitched one of the three horses and mounted it. Horse and rider pressed the attack but the Duncan mount was a colt that had never been ridden and he ran wild. However, the battle continued with added force and finally the bear, exhausted, lay still on the ground to be dispatched at close range by the itinerant hunter.
In the early 1900's a Mr Dearlove needed power for his newly-constructed brick yard north of town. He contacted Robert Duncan for the use of his steam engine which had replaced horsepower on the Duncan farm. It might be noted that the Duncan's second home succeeding the beloved log shack, was a spacious dwelling made of red brick from the Dearlove yard.
It is no exaggeration to say that Robert Duncan was an active leader in the community endeavors. Before 1905 when the Statute Labor Law was in effect, he was a path master. This meant that he was to see to it that roads and trails were kept passable in his section of the township. In later years he served as a councillor in the Rural Municipality of Louise and President of the Pilot Mound Agricultural Society. During his tenure with that Society he promoted the formation of a Board of Lady Directors. It proved to be a valuable innovation.
He was also a devoted church goer, serving as Sunday School superintendent and elder on the Presbyterian Church Session and following church union in 1925 he served with the United Church Session until his death in 1943.
His wife Ellen had many talents and interests. She was renowned for baking and butter-making. Her baking skills were such that local merchants would have her test newly arrived flour shipments. She could tell them how many loaves could be made from a hundredweight.
In 1911 she won a sweepstake prize for her butter making at the Winnipeg Exhibition, also first prize for a tub of butter at the Chicago Fair. She encouraged boys and girls in furthering farming skills, a work now done by the famous 4-H Clubs. She held sewing and cooking classes in the local school (after 4:00 PM.)
She was a member of the Ladies Agricultural Society her husband founded, a Charter member of the Women's Institute, Life member of the Red Cross and life Member of the Women's Missionary Society. Robert and Ellen Duncan turned the farm over to Their only son Jim in 1930, retiring to Pilot Mound. Mrs Duncan passed away in 1937, her husband in 1943. Both of them had been truly public-spirited and contributed enormously to the economic and cultural health of the community they had seen grow from pioneer days.
In the United Church at Pilot Mound are two beautiful candelabra, presented by members of the family in memory of their parents. These are fitting memorials to two who had shed the light of life on many a pathway.

Neilson) was born on 21 Sep 1859 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 1 Jan 1937 in Pilot Mound, Pilot Mound Census Division, Manitoba, Canada; was buried in 1937 in Greenwood Cemetery, Pilot Mound, Pilot Mound Census Division, Manitoba, Canada. Notes:

    James MacKenzie Duncan-his life story

To Mr. Duncan the history of Regina from practically its beginning to the present relates scenes almost as familiar to him as the chapters of his own life story. He was one of the early settlers of thirty years ago, saw service during the rebellion of 1885, and for many years has held a prominent position in business affairs and public service.

James MacKenzie Duncan was born in Lanark county, Ontario, in 1859. His parents were James and Elizabeth (Lockhart) Duncan, the former a native of Ramsay Twp. Lanark County, Ontario and the latter of Paisley, Scotland.

At the Almonte high school Mr. Duncan finished his education and in 1882 came west and located at the little settlement of Regina, which had barely started on its progress towards metropalitan importance. He was a farmer in this vicinity for a couple of years. With the breaking out of the rebellion he joined the North West Mounted Police, and was with the force throughout the period of hostilities. At the engagement with Chief Poundmaker at Cut Knife Creek his horse was shot from under him, but otherwise he came out of the battle without injury to himself.

For more than fifteen years after the rebellion Mr. Duncan was a merchant at Regina, a business which he followed until 1902. In that year he was appointed sheriff of Western Assiniboia, and gave a fine measure of efficient service to this office for several years. Since that time he has had an office in Regina and has handled a large amount of real estate sales in this city and vicinity.

At McGregor, Manitoba, in 1888, Mr. Duncan married Miss Sarah L. Winter, formerly of Brandon. They have one daughter, named Kathleen. Mr. Duncan affilites with the Canadian Order of Forresters and the Ancient Order of United Workmen, is a member of the Assiniboia Club, and his chuch is the Presbyterian. Among other business interests he has investments and other connections with several of the local companies. He was alderman of the city during 1895-1896. He was a member of the board of works in 1895 when the city held its first territorial exhibition, and was instrumental in securing the grounds now used for this annual event. Wherever he could, he has given his help toward advancing his home city in prosperity and upbuilding, and it is with no small patriotic pride that he regards the resources of the present capital and metropolis.

In 1878 James M. Duncan went West, first to Manitoba and then to Regina in 1882. At the time of the Riel Rebellion in 1885 he served as transport driver with the government troops. While doing this work he was captured and held hostage by Chief Poundmaker, one of Riel's allies. Despite this unpromising introduction to the West James decided to remain there. When Saskatchewan became a province in 1905 he became Sheriff of the Regina District. He died in 1937.

    Notes:

    JOHN DUNCAN

John Duncan son of James and Elizabeth (Lockhart) Duncan was born on April 19th 1865 in Ramsay Township Lot 10 Concession 11, near Almonte Ontario. John married Jessie Steele of Ramsay in 1903. They had four children all born in Regina, Saskatchewan, James (Jim), Mary ,Johnston and Willis.

In Regina when mother died in 1905.

Memories of My Father John Duncan by his oldest son Jim.

In his earlier days on his parents farm, he helped with various chores and farm work. During the winters as he reached his late teens he went to the bush to haul logs with a team of horses. He commented about a spring when returning home there was a track on the snow over the ice on the river; the track on the snow started to rot in the spring thaw and one of the horses broke through the ice and was nearly lost. I failed to pay the attention I should have of his earlier days.
He arrived in Regina in 1890 and here filed on a homestead. Farming at that time on the Regina plains was about as primitive as the early days in Ontario except the land was very flat, few trees or stones to clear. As other Homesteaders of that time he broke his land with a hand plough, which was single share controlled by two curved handles at the back for the operator to gage the depth he wanted. The plough was hauled by horses, the reins secured around his waist so his hands were free to guide the plough. Two acres a day was a good days work; homesteaders often hired out to do breaking for others pay ranging from five to ten cents an acre.
In later years I always admired his adapt way of handling and binding the loose stalks of grain. The grain having been cut with a sythe and bound together to make a sheaf. This was before binders and threshing mills. Father talked of threshing grain in the winter, the engine from which they got the power and the separator having to be hauled by horses. Our house was small but it had a big kitchen, large enough to feed a threshing crew of twenty men. The farmers had a "Beef Ring" each farmer provided a beef animal in rotation and in rotation they accepted their turn at each cut of beef. The butcher was another farmer who got a free ride in that he didn't have to provide a beef.
In February of 1912 our mother died and my father's sister came and looked after us for some years. For the first twenty-one years of my life father saw a great deal of me and I of him, seemed to me that my father and all his brothers were mild mannered men who were able to accept their setbacks and proceed as though nothing much had happened to dampen their optimism.
Johnston my brother who had remained on the farm with our father took over the farm when father retired.

    AGNES DUNCAN

Agnes the daughter of James Duncan and Elizabeth Lockhart was born September 14th 1872 in Ramsay Township Lot 10, Concession 11. Agnes was married in Almonte, Ontario in 1899 to Ben Holden. Agnes and her husband travelled to Western Canada the same year of their marriage and settled in Glenboro, Manitoba. They later moved to Brant Alberta where they farmed until 1943 when they retired and moved to Calgary, Alberta.
In 1905 when her mother died she is noted as from Pilot Butte, Ass.

The following is taken from a Calgary paper:

    "OSTOGENARIAN ARTIST
This is a Saturday for coincidence, I journeyed up the North Hill Friday to see Mrs. Agnes (Duncan) Holden, who still enjoys a fair reputation as an artist despite her age -86yrs. While we were chatting she turned to me and suddenly announced she had been in the Regina cyclone of 1912.
Agnes is better known here for her work with paints, although that reputation can go back 60 years ago to Almonte, Ontario - a farm community outside Ottawa. I'm not a judge of art but the best illustration I saw in the Holden home was a winter landscape that was done in 1899. Mrs Agnes Holden grew up on the farm and came from a large family. When she married she had seven daughters.
On the day of the tornado (June 30,1912) she had four children but they were away from the main path of the storm.
Funny thing about this interesting lady -- she is in despair of her immediate family because she insists upon living alone (since her husband's death in 1954) but she brings up an interesting philosophical point. She claims that she enjoys her housework and still has time every day to go shopping and see the downtown sights.
She has been very cute with the paintings. Already she has given away 22 scenes to children and grandchildren. Secretly hoping to come up with another artist, I suppose. However I notice the 1899 landscape still hangs in the living room and I unhesitatingly place it as good professional work."

Agnes and Ben Holden marked their golden wedding anniversary September 1949 with all seven daughters present.

The tragedy took place very close .to my own house and. everyone was shocked to hear of the outcome. Your son was of such a happy disposition that he endeared himself to all those with whom he came into contact and there are many citizens in Prince Albert today who feel that his untimely death was a real tragedy. Rae
    Duncan

She was a "family oriented" wife and mother who always went "beyond the call of duty", through the depression, war, illness and hard times as well as all the good times! Her dry sense of humor and good Scottish work ethic along with the ability to turn her hand to whatever - including "plowing a straight furrow" and her incredible ability to cook and bake are what we remember.
In her later years she discovered "Bingo". She liked to win but she really enjoyed shouting "Bingo" and the getting together with other bingo fans several times a week in the summer.
Mom/Rae: Thanks for showing us that good friends are hard to find, hard to leave, but impossible to forget!

    A Favorite poem:
    You did some good today
You spoke something helpful along the way
    You spread a little happiness
Said a kind word to someone in distress
You could show a kindly deed
    Plant a tiny positive seed
You gave someone a better start
We remember your caring, loving heart.

DUNCAN, ROBERT MCINTOSH P/O(P) J19957//R135751. From Almonte Ontario. Killed in action January 29/44 age 25. #77 Squadron (Esse Potius Quam Videri). Halifax aircraft # HR 841 was shot down during night operations over the target Berlin, Germany. WO. W.C. Thom Sgt. G.M. Jandron, and two of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. Two of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Officer Pilot Duncan has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Runnymede War Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, England.

taken from War listings at Aviation Museum in Hamilton Ont.

Robert's name has been inscribed on his parents head stone in the Auld Kirk Cementary Almonte, Ontario.

    Died:
On January 28, 1944, Duncan, along with his crew was flying in low visability and collided with a German aircraft. After a successful bombing raid, their Halifax Mk. II was returning to base. following the collision, the aircrasft lost control and crashed into a large building, catching fire. According to a German report, the collision occurred over Wittenberg Platz, Berlin, the plane dived into the eighth floor, only coming to rest on the fifth floor of the building, which was already devastated from previous raids. When the fire died out, eight bodies were recovered, all of which were unrecognizable. The bodies of Sergeant Jarvis and Sergeant Jandron's were identified from the crash site. Because the crashed Halifax aircraft had a crew of only seven men and eight bodies were recovered in the building, there was some question as to their identities. As such, the names of the remaining five men including Pilot Officer Bert Duncan were listed as missing in action for several months until, in September, 1944, they became officially presumed to have died on Active Service overseas. In a letter to the Department of National Defence, Bert's mother expressed doubt of her son's death and the possibility that he had been taken a prisoner of war, in an attempt to gain information from the officer.

944, Thursday June 8, The Almonte Gazette front page

Officially Listed As Killed In ActionMr and Mrs E.H. Duncan Are Informed of Their Son's DeathMr and Mrs E.H. Duncan of Ramsay, received a letter last week from the R.C.A.F., Casualty Officer for Chief of Air Staff, Ottawa, stating that the body of their son, Warrant Officer 2 Robert MacIntosh Duncan had been positively identified. The message which was forwarded by the International Red Cross Society quoted German information that five members of the crew lost their lives. Two only R.M. Duncan and Sgt G.M. Jandron were positively identified. The other members of the crew are still classified as missing. Mr and Mrs Duncan were first informed that their son was missing on Jan 29 and their many friends sincerely regret that the long period of anxious waiting ends so sadly. "Bert" as he was usually known was 24 years of age and went overseas late in 1942. He enlisted in November, 1941, and trained at Manning Pool, Brandon and at Calgary and Regina. He received his wings at Dauphin. Besides his father and mother, he leaves six brothers, five of whom are in the armed services and three sisters.

Obituary?tab?WILLIAM ROBERT DUNCAN APRIL 4, 1944-APRIL 7, 2010 Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind; Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave. It is with sadness, but relief that Bill's fight with cancer came to a peaceful end on Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Predeceased by his father Willis Duncan ( 1998) and his mother Grace Duncan (2004), Bill leaves to remember all the good times his wife Eleanor, his son Chad (Christina) and granddaughters Kimberly and Jessie; daughters Marquita (Grant) and Jana (Tim) ; and stepson Trevor Gates (Sonia) and grandson Atticus. Bill is also survived by his sister Carole Splett (Ed), brother Doug, father-in-law Paul Desjardins (Barbara), sisters-in-law Marie and Cindy (Gary), and brother-in-law Wil Desjardins (Rhonda), as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Most of Bill's life was spent in Regina; he attended the University of Regina for his Bachelor of Arts degree, as well as his Bachelor of Administration. Although Bill was tempted to pursue a career in science, he opted for economics and had a long and successful career as a civil servant, retiring as Director of Finance for Social Services in 2004. Bill's interests were many, including astronomy, rock formations, nature, history, genealogy, creating home videos, downhill skiing, ballroom dancing, golf and travel. Bill loved the Rocky Mountains camp trips when his children were young, downhill skiing and more recently hiking at Jasper. He also enjoyed spending time at the cottage on Pasqua Lake where, under protest, he would help Eleanor with one of her many projects. Last April's hot air balloon ride over the rock formations in Cappadocia, Turkey was a highlight of Bill's travel experiences. A Celebration of Bill's Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 12, 2010 in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina. Flowers gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, memory gifts may be made to the World Wildlife FundCanada (wwf.ca/donations) or Willi...
