    On January 17th, 1956, at the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, Almonte, Ontario, there entered into rest, after an illness of seven weeks, Agnes Jane Caldwell, of Tatlock, widow of James H. Rintoul. She was in her 80th year. She was one of the older residents of Darling Township and had lived all her married life there. Mrs. Rintoul was born near Watson's Corners in Dalhousie Township, October 24th, 1876 the daughter of John Caldwell and Ellen Mcllraith. As a young woman she taught school. In 1901 she married James H. Rintoul of Darling Township and came to live there. Her husband died in June 1946. To them were born five children: Helen M. who died in 1931; William H. who died in 1909; Annie A. (Mrs. Ben E. James) of Almonte; John C. of Tatlock and David A. on the homestead at Tatlock. There are nine grandchildren: Donna, Brian and Doreen, children of Dave; John Claire and Franklin, children of John; Benjamin, William and Jane, children of Annie (James) and one great granddaughter, Jennifer James of Bowmanville. Surviving also are four brothers and one sister: Rev. James S. Caldwell of Winnipeg; Charles M. of Watson's Corners; Ellen E., (Nellie) Mrs. A. W. Scott of Powassan; Thomas R. of Edmonton and Calvin L. of Kingston and one foster sister, Jean, (Mrs. Walter Yuill) of Whitby. One sister and three brothers are gone on before. They are Esther A., Mrs. Geo. F. Lashley, Lanark; Rev. John A. of Edmonton, Alex and Scott, Watson's Corners. Mrs. Rintoul was of Irish-Scottish descent and was a member of the Presbyterian Church and in later years the United Church, St. Peter's at Tatlock. Her kindly manner, generous nature and tolerant views endeared her to a wide community of many friends who today mourn her passing. The faith in God, which she professed openly by expression, and in her living will be remembered down the years by those who follow. Her body rested at her late (no more)

    Word was received here of the death of Miss Helen Rintoul, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. H. Rintoul. The funeral which was held on Wednesday was largely attended. The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved.

    Quite a number of the residents of this place attended the funeral of the late Helen Rintoul, held at the church at Tatlock, on Wednesday last. Her body was interred in the family plot in the cemetery of this place.

    MRS ANNIE JAMES
    Annie Adella Rintoul James passed away at the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital on July 17th, 1978, at the age of 72. Born on August 13, 1905, in Darling township, she was the daughter of the late James Haig Rintoul and Agnes Jane Caldwell. She was educated at S.S.#2, Darling, Lanark Continuation School and Ottawa Normal School from which she graduated in 1924. She taught school at Herron's Mills prior to her marriage on June 16, 1928, to Benjamin Edward James of the James Settlement in Lanark township. She farmed with her husband in Lanark township until 1949 and while there was, for a time, secretary-treasurer of Rosedale Cheese Factory at Union Hall. She lived briefly at Appleton and Carleton Place and then moved to Almonte in 1953 where she resided until her death. She was past-president of the Almonte Ladies' Curling Club, the first women elected to the Almonte Public School Board' a long-term member of the Women's Institute and director of the W.I. Provincial Board in 1947 and 1948 and was active in the Progressive Conservative Association, The Anglican Church Women and the Senior Citizens' Club, including the Senior Citizens' Choir. She also worked for the Prices Division of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics for a number of years until her retirement in 1970. She is survived by her children: Benjamin David of Ottawa; William Haig of R.R.6, Bowmanville, and Jane Ann Elaine (Mrs John A. Chamney) of Carleton Place; and ten grandchildren - Margaret Ann, Martha Helene and Elizabeth Jane (Jennie) James of Ottawa; Jennifer Edith Ann James of London, Ontario; Donald Thomas, Glenn William and Sheila Lynn James of Bowmanville and Lori Ann Lila, Sara Jane and Amy Melissa Chamney of Carleton Place. She is also survived by her brothers, John C. Rintoul of Lanark and David A. Rintoul of Almonte. She was predeceased by her husband in 1973 and her brother William and sister Helen a number of years ago. Funeral service was held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Almonte on July 19, 1978, with Archdeacon John Salter officiating, assisted by Geoffrey Coupland, Burial took place at St. George's Cemetery, Clayton. The pallbearers were Ivan Gardiner, grandson Glenn James, nephews Herbert Stanley, Brian Rintoul and Harold James and her neighbour Arnold Gunn.

    Annie married Benjamin Edward James on 16 Jun 1928.     Passed away on Dec. 27, 2020 at Elisabeth Bruyere Hospital in his 92nd year.

    He was a fifth-generation Canadian of Irish ancestry, descended from pioneer Canadian settlers who emigrated from County Wicklow, Ireland, to Lanark Township, in Lanark County, Eastern Ontario in 1820. He was born May 29, 1929, and grew up in the "James Settlement", Union Hall, Lanark Township and returned to that area to live in 1991. He was a resident of The Waterside Community Retirement Residence in Carleton Place since 2016.

    He had a career of almost 40 years in the Canadian Telecommunications Industry, retiring from Bell Canada in 1987. He was formerly with the Trans-Canada Telephone System (Telecom Canada/ The Sentor Group of Companies) and Bell Canada International Inc. He was involved in the industry from coast to coast across Canada including Canada's North, Greenland, continental U.S.A. with A.T. & T. Long Lines, Europe and the Middle East with B.C.I. Inc. and the Arabian American Oil Co. (ARAMCO) in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, the Hague, Netherlands and Houston, Texas, U.S.A.

    Following retirement he was elected as Councillor for the Township of Ramsay and later served on the Town of Mississippi Mills Police Services Board and the Zone 2 of the Ontario Association of Police Services Board (OAPSB). Throughout his lifetime he was an active member of the Anglican Church of Canada, serving in various capacities at the Parish and Diocesan levels in Montreal, Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley areas. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, Mississippi Lodge #147 Almonte and Maple Granite Chapter #61 Carleton Place, Ontario. He was a strong supporter of the Progressive Conservative Party having served on Riding Association Executives for the Notre Dame de Gras and Westmount Ridings in Montreal and Ottawa Carleton and Lanark Renfrew Associations in Eastern Ontario.

    During his retirement years he received his Canadian Radio Amateurs licence (VA3 BDJ) with the help and patience of associates in the Lanark/North Leeds A.R.E.S. Group with whom he later became associated. He was a Life Member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and a Charter Member of B.P.G. Inc. After his daughter Jennie's death in 2005, Ben was instrumental in the establishment of the Jennie James Depression Research Fund at the Royal Ottawa Hospital. He also was a long-term member and Past President of the Folger Hunt Club, an outdoor enthusiast with active interests in agriculture, forestry, gardening and motorcycling, as well as fast-ball, baseball and curling.

    He was predeceased by his parents Benjamin E. James and Annie A. Rintoul, his estranged wife Sally Helene (Code) and his daughter Elizabeth Jane (Jennie) James and survived by two daughters, Margaret Ann James (Scott McLean) of Ottawa, Martha H?l?ne and Sam Lubbat of Chicago and by four grandchildren, Christopher and Steven James and Vivienne and Kate Lubbat as well as his brother Wm. H. James (June) of Courtice, Ontario and his sister, Jane Ann E. Chamney (John) of Carleton Place, Ontario and many nieces, nephews and their families.
