    Mrs John Arthur
    The funeral of the late Mrs John Arthur was held this Thursday afternoon from the home of her son, Oral, Ottawa Street to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Mrs Arthur died at the home of her daughter, Mrs John McGill on Tuesday following a period of failing health. She was in her 84th year. Mr Arthur was the former Jessie Stewart and was born on the Stewart homestead, 10th line of Ramsay, a daughter of the late John Stewart and his wife Margaret Morrison. In 1888 she married John Arthur and the couple occupied the farm on the 11th line until 1910 when Mr Arthur passed away. She leaves one son, John Oral and three daughters, namely, Mrs John McGill (Margaret) Pakenham; Mrs Frank Rose (Kathleen) Perth and Mrs Robt McPhail (Jean) Ramsay. There are also two brothers George and William of Ramsay. Four brothers and two sisters predeceased her ? John, James, Charles, Archie, Katharine and Margaret, Mrs Geo Murphy. There are also, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mrs Arthur was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Blakeney until union after which she continued as a member of the United Church. Funeral services were conducted at the home and the cemetery by Rev H.L. Morrison, pastor of Trinity and Blakeney charges. The pallbearers were Dr Edgar Murphy of Cobden; Charles Stewart, Perth; Wilbert Whaley, Athens; James Bingham, George Arthur and O.A. McPhail. Mrs Arthur was highly regarded in the community where she lived all her life. She was charitable and kindly and took an interest in activities of the church organizations and in social work until advancing years made this impossible. She was a member of a fine generation that has all but passed away.

    Margaret M. McGill
    Mrs Margaret Morrison McGill (nee Arthur), widow of the late John McGill Sr., of R.R. 1, Pakenham, passed away at the Lake Avenue Nursing Home, Carleton Place, at 11.15 p.m. on Monday, April 28, 1975. She was 86. Born in Pakenham Township on March 12, 1889, she was a daughter of the late John and Jessie Arthur. She received her education at Blakeney Public School and at Willis Business College in Ottawa. On October 31, 1919, she was married at Blakeney to the late John McGill. Mrs McGill was a member of the United Church, the Women's Institute, Ladies' Aid and the Horticultural Society. With a special interest in handicrafts, she was a lady director of the North Lanark Agricultural Society. She is survived by two daughters, Jean S. McGill, Toronto and Marion K. (Mrs Murray Cavanagah) of Pakenham, and three grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs Jean McPhail of Almonte and Mrs Kathleen Rose of Perth. She was predeceased by one brother, Oral. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, Church Street, Almonte, on Wednesday afternoon, April 30th with Rev C. Dodds of Pakenham United Church officiating. Burial was at Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were Keith Armstrong, Art McPhail, Ted Woods, Ken Campbell, Jack Arthur and Alex Bowes.

    The death of Mr Oral Arthur occurred at Almonte in the General Hospital, Saturday, April 10, 1971. He was 77. Born on February 9, 1894, he was a son of the late John Arthur and his wife, the late Jessie Stewart. He was married to Kathleen Anderson on September 29, 1921, who predeceased him February 7, 1966. Surviving are two sons, Jack of Almonte and Donald of Pakenham and five grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs Jack McGill (Margaret), Pakenham; Mrs Frank Rose (Kathleen), Perth, and Mrs Robert McPhail (Jean), Almonte. He received his education at Blakeney school. He was a member of the Masonic Order, receiving his 50 year membership pin in February. The funeral was held at the Kerry Funeral Home on Sunday, April 11, 1971, at 2:30 p.m., with Rev Robert McCrea officiating, Entombment at Auld Kirk Cemetery Vault, with interment in the spring. The pallbearers were John Currie, Weldon Timmons, Melville Royce, John Gorman, Sam Arthur and Jack McPhail.

    John married Kathleen Helen Anderson on 29 Sep 1921 in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.     Kathleen Almeda Rose
    Kathleen Almeda (Arthur) Rose, died August 19, 1981, at the Great War Memorial Hospital, Perth, in her 82nd year. Born Dec 25, 1899 in Ramsay township, she was the daughter of the late John and Jessie (Stewart) Arthur. As a young woman she was employed in Almonte at the Telephone Co and later at Taber's Dry Goods Store, until her marriage in 1926 to Frank Rose of Ramsay township. After residing for a short time in Hamilton, Ohio, USA, they settled in Smiths Falls in 1928, where her husband began a 20-year career in the OPP. Predeceased by Frank in 1948 she began practical nursing, which lasted until she was 70, but her lifelong service to others continued. Mrs Rose leaves two daughters Barbara (and her husband Keith Armstrong, Kingston, Ont) and Margaret (and her husband Ken Campbell, RR 6 Perth, Ont) and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by her older sister Margaret, Mrs Jack McGill and her only brother, Oral Arthur. Surviving is her younger sister, Jean, Mrs Bob McPhail, RR 3 Almonte. Since 1940 Mrs Rose upon moving to Perth, attended St Paul's UC. The funeral August 21 was conducted in the chapel by the staff of Blair & Son Funeral Home with the Rev Mr Andrew McKenzie officiating. The pallbearers were: Frank Campbell, Robert Campbell, Jack Arthur, Jack McPhail, Raymond Arthur, Murray Cavanagh. Honourary pallbearers were Arthur McPhail and Ronald Arthur. Interment was in Auld Kirk Cemetery 8th Line Ramsay, near Almonte. Floral tributes were beautiful and other donations were many.

    Kathleen married James Francis "Frank" Rose in 1926.     Jean Stewart

    Jean passed away at Stoneridge Manor in Carleton Place, on Thursday, March 7th, 2019 at the age of 98.

    She is survived by her sister Marion Cavanagh, nephew Stewart Cavanagh, nieces Barbara Cavanagh and Norah Yuill (Brian) and grand nephew Michael Yuill and will be sadly missed by all. Jean is predeceased by her parents John and Margaret McGill (nee Arthur) and by her brother-in-law Murray Cavanagh.

    After finishing Almonte High School, Jean worked for the Federal Government in Ottawa before moving to Toronto in the 1950's where she held jobs as an editorial assistant, copywriter and researcher. The last 12 years of her working life were spent doing research for the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Jean enjoyed writing and researching and authored a number of books including one on the early history of Lanark County and one on the life and work of sculptor Robert Tait McKenzie. Jean also wrote and published two children's books. During her spare time Jean enjoyed sketching and painting watercolour landscapes.

    The family would like to thank Dr. Drake and the staff at Stoneridge Manor for their care of Jean over the past 10 years.
