    Obit. ? The Late William Gilmour
    With sincere regret we have this week to record the death of one of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of this town, in the person of Mr Wm Gilmour. The sad event took place at his home here last Thursday in the 69th year of his age, after an illness of about a week from pleurisy. Deceased was one of the best known men in the county and a generation ago was one of Ramsay's leading citizens. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, February 2nd, 1821, and when an infant six weeks old his parents (the late Allan Gilmour and wife) emigrated to Canada. They settled the same year of the farm in Ramsay now owned and occupied by Mr E. Tierney, and there the subject of this sketch lived continuously for over sixty-four years. He had an opportunity of experiencing the hardships incident to the early settlement of this county, as well as the pleasure of seeing the primeval forest make way for the prosperous towns, villages and farms that are now to be found throughout this section. When but twelve years of age he did his share in clearing the land and assisting his parents in the work of tilling the soil, whereby they secured a livelihood. At that time education was almost out of the question. The school (!) then in use was a small log building that stood on what is now our Bridge street, opposite Mr Robertson's store; and the roads leading to it were paths through the bush ? "blazed roads," as they were called. Later on what was known as "Gemmill's school" was established, and there Mr Gilmour received what little education he got. However, he made good use of his spare time at home, and in this way picked up knowledge that proved very useful to him in after life. He filled the important office of collector of taxes for the township before Almonte was made a separate municipality; was for many years a constable; and from about the year 1860 till his death he was the trusted agent of Major (now Lieut,-Col.) Gemmill. He was also librarian of the Ramsay Library and Mechanics' Institute for a good many years. He was thoroughly honourable in his dealings, and won an enviable reputation among his fellows. In 1844 he married Ellen Burns, Who survives him. Seven children were born to them, five of whom are living, viz.: Mrs Peter Naismith, Ramsay; Allan W. Gilmour, Braeside; Robert, of this town; William, of Ramsay; and James B., now in Dakota. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, and was very largely attended, old residents from all parts of the county being present to pay the last tribute of respect to their departed friend. The mourning widow and family have our sympathy in their bereavement.

    "The Late Allan Gilmour"
    It becomes our duty this week to chronicle the death of one of the earliest inhabitants of this neighbourhood in the person of Mr. Allan Gilmour, who passed away last Thursday, aged 74 years. His system had been gradually wearing out for six months past ? a general breakup. Mr. Gilmour's parents, the late Allan Gilmour and wife, came to Canada from Scotland with the early Settlers of 1821, and less than a year after their arrival here deceased was born on the lot on which he lived all his life and on which he died ? the corner lot on the 9th Line of Ramsay adjoining Col. Gemmill's property. He was therefore one of the very first children born in this vicinity, and saw the wonderful transformations that have taken place in the last three quarters of a century.
    He was twice married ? first to Miss More, sister of Mr. James More of Ramsay by whom he had a family of seven children, who survive as follows:
    Allan A. Gilmour of Renfrew;
    John A,
    William & Joseph Gilmour,
    Mrs. James Townend and
    Mrs. W.F. Peden, Almonte; and
    Mrs. Wilson, Brockville.
    Mrs. Gilmour died many years ago.
    His second wife nee Miss Clarke of Packenham survives. The funeral took place on Saturday to the Eighth Line Cemetery when a large number of people turned out to pay the final tribute of respect to one who has so long been associated with the progress of this section.

    Mrs Peter Naismith died at her home on the ninth line of Ramsay, on Sunday morning, She was 81 years of age, and had been in poor health for the past two months. Mrs Naismith, whose maiden name was Catherine Gilmour, belonged to a pioneer family of Ramsay Township. She was a daughter of the late William Gilmour and his wife, Helen Burns, settlers from Scotland, who made their home on a farm on the outskirts of Almonte. Sixty years ago she was married to Mr Peter Naismith and their wedded life was an ideal one. He predeceased her in 1914. On both sides of the house they were widely connected. They had a family of eleven children all of whom reached maturity. They are: Peter and Albert on the homestead in Ramsay; John of Calgary; James of Vermilion, Alta; Welland, of Exparto, Calif; William, of Denver, Col; Lawrence, of Almonte, and Maggie on the homestead. Mrs Naismith was a member of the Auld Kirk on the eighth line of Ramsay, as a girl and continued as a member of St Andrew's, now Bethany United Church until her death. She was of the finest type of the pioneer stock, always ready, despite her busy home life, to render help to neighbours and friends when needed. She was one of the best known ladies in the district, and this was evidenced by the very large assembly of mourners at her funeral on Tuesday when she was laid to rest in the Auld Kirk Cemetery beside the remains of her husband. Rev J.R. MacCrimmon conducted the service and the pallbearers were old neighbours: Messrs Andrew Cochran, Wm Paul, Wm Phillips, Greville Toshack, Alex Barker and Jack McGill.
