    ?b?James Metcalf?/b?
Death removed on Tuesday of this week one who had been for years a familiar figure on the streets of Almonte, when Mr Jas. Metcalf was called across to the great mysterious beyond. He had not enjoyed the best of health for the past three or four months, and when that insidious disease pneumonia fastened itself upon him, he had not the strength to combat the onslaught of the physical foe and went down in the conflict. The deceased was a son of the late Hugh Metcalf, who died in May last, and was a resident of Almonte for the past thirty years. In his younger days he was a strong hardy man, and being the eldest son in a family of twelve children, he had to take a large share of the hard work. He worked for some time with the late Alex. Caldwell, and it was here he gained a knowledge of the sawing business which he put to practice in Almonte in after years. In partnership with his brother, Robert, he started a saw and shingle mill on the old Cannon property below the stone bridge. They afterward moved to a mill on the site on which the Anchor Knitting mill now stands. Some time late they bought the water power now owned by Messrs. Young Bros to whom they sold it after buying the Lang sawmill. Here they did business for several years, lately disposing of the power to the town for electric light purpose. The late Mr Metcalf was for several years a member of the town council, and was successful in polling a large vote in contest for public positions. In politics he was a supporter of Conservative principles, but was not so bound to his party that he could not see good in any other, and supported Mr W.O. Caldwell in the election against Dr. Preston. This he did for personal reasons having known Mr Caldwell well when he worked for his father, the late Alex. Caldwell. In 1880 the deceased was married to Miss Reilly, of Wakefield, and to them two children were born, a son, who died in infancy, and a daughter, who is now eight years of age, and who, with her mother, mourn the loss of one who was dear to them both. His death is the first break in the large family of children, the death of his father, a few months ago being the first in the family circle. His mother still resides at the home in Ramsay, and his brothers Dr. Metcalf Robert, and Henry are residents of Almonte, and Alex., of Ramsay. The funeral took place this (Thursday) afternoon to the eighth line cemetery and was largely attended.

James married Catherine Reilly on 18 Apr 1889 in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Catherine was born in 1861 in Wakefield, Outaouais Region, Quebec, Canada; died on 14 Dec 1927 in Carleton County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 16 Dec 1927 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Almonte Loses One of Its Best Known Citizens
In Death of Dr. A.A. Metcalfe
The funeral of the late Dr. Archibald Albert Metcalfe was held from his late residence Main Street to Almonte United Church. where service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. F. C. Gerard, assisted by Rev. D. Leslie Elder of the Presbyterian Church. He was in his 93rd year. Dr. Metcalfe died in the General Hospital, here, on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 1st following an illness of about two weeks' duration. He was one of Almonte's oldest and best known citizens having practiced medicine here for 65 years and having filled various elective offices for almost half-acentury. He served as mayor of the town for a couple of terms and previous to that had been a member of the council but it was as an electric light commissioner and later as a member and chairman of the Public Utilities Commission that he was best known to the public.
    Electrical Pioneer
The doctor was a pioneer in the field of electrical development: and it was only at the last nomination that he retired from active service on this important body. Dr. Metcalfe who was the last of a family of 12 was born on the homestead, eighth line of Ramsay and after attending the rural school in his section graduated from the Almonte High School which was then directed by the redoubtable P. C. McGregor. He made up his mind to study medicine at an early age but before entering Queen's University for that purpose he went to the model school at Perth where he received a permit to teach school. He taught at McDonald's Corners for one place a find often reminisced a little about the model school at Perth which was under the supervision of a most efficient principal the late James Jacques.
    Post Graduate Course
After getting his medical degree, from Queen's the doctor took a post graduate course in training at the famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester. From the first he was a most successful physician and surgeon and he had a large practice, He was noted for his kindly attitude and often unpaid ministrations to the poor. To be exact about his public life it is understood he served seven. terms as mayor between the years 1917 and 1929. He first was elected to what was known in those days as the electric light commission in 1901 and had a seat on it almost continuously until the end of last year. While Mayor he served on that Board by virtue of his office as chief magistrate of the town, and at other times as an independent elective commissioner. In 1910 he helped form the Mississippi River Improvement, Co. Ltd., the purpose of which is indicated by its name.
    Encouraged Education
Dr. Metcalfe was interested in education and always encouraged: improvements at the local high school. He was active in sports In. his youth being on the track teams here and at the university in Kingston, As he grew older he maintained his interest in lawn bowling, curling and was a patron of hockey, baseball and all such games. Like so many doctors of the old school he was fond of horses and had some good ones in his time which he drove himself at the fall fairs and other shows. During World War I he served as a lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps and during the last 56 years was a Lanark County coroner. There was a large attendance at the funeral service in the United Church where, Rev. Mr. Gerard paid a fitting tribute to one who had performed such outstanding services in the medical and municipal fields.
    Staunch Conservative
Dr, Metcalfe's wife the former Isabel Mitchell McCallum died 25 years ago. There was no family but since then a niece of his wife made her home with the doctor. She is Miss Ishabel Guthrie a trained nurse who came here from Scotland to be with her aunt in her last illness, No obituary of the doctor would be complete without a reference to his political activities. He was a staunch Conservative and for many years was an active and successful worker in the Party's interest in Almonte and North Lanark. He had a cheerful disposition and was friendly If he had any use for a person at all. One of his saving graces ? one that is well worth mentioning ? was that he could have a great argument with some person today and be just as friendly with him when he met him on the street tomorrow. He was an institution in this town and will be missed by a host of friends. Pallbearers were Messrs, Jas. Metcalfe, Thos. Voyce, Frank Honeyborne, John Lyons. Don Campbell and Jack Joss.

Archibald married Isabella Mackenzie McCullum on 10 Apr 1900 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Isabella (daughter of Archie McCullum and Ellen Shannon) was born in 1874 in Oban, Argyll and Bute, Argyllshire, Scotland; died on 2 Feb 1937 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
