Another aged and highly respected resident of the community passed away on Monday evening, in the person of Mr Jas Barker, sr., after about four months of suffering from cancer of the stomach. Deceased who was the only son of the late Wm Barker, was born in Ramsay township nearly 83 years ago, on the farm upon which he died, but spent his early boyhood and until he was married on the farm on the eighth line now owned by his son, Mr R. Barker. In 1855 he was married to Joann Hood, who was born in Scotland, and had come to Canada. After their marriage they went to the farm upon both spent the balance of their lives, her death taking place in 1874. This union was blessed with a family of nine children., two of whom died in infancy. those who are now living are William in Almonte; James at Blakeney; Robert near Bennie's Corners; Alex on the homestead; Maggie (Mrs Arthur Beach) at Nokomis, Sask; David and Neil at Seattle, Wash. Some time after the death of his first wife Mr. Barker was married to Agnes Wood, a daughter of the late Walter Y Wood, who is still living. There were no children to the second marriage. A sister Mrs Wm Conner of Carleton Place, also survives. The late Mr Barker was possessed of more than ordinary energy and progressiveness, and as a consequence was one of Ramsay township's most prosperous farmers.
Evidence of his thrift and thoroughness was to be seen all over his farm, and many a traveller along the ninth line had looked with admiration at the splendid fields of waving grain which were the result of his up-to-date methods and his thorough application of them. in this connection he was crop-viewer for the township for a number years and was connected with the N.L.A.S., latterly as Honourary director, so long and so actively that when failing energy prevented him from being on duty at the fair, his presence and assistance were much missed. he was also a member of township council for some years, and here is fine, executive ability and good judgement were of much value, especially in the roads and bridge department. He was also active in church matters, and took a deep interest in the Presbyterian church of Blakeney, of which he was a member, and in fact was one of the few to whose earnestness and energy, the existence of the church was due. For many years he was a member of the managing committee, and was also a leader of the choir in his earlier years. he was one of those who was instrumental in the organization of the Rosebank cheese factory, and for some time its energetic president. the funeral took place today, Thursday, to the eighth line cemetery, and was a fitting tribute to the memory of so old and useful a member of the community as Mr Barker was. the services were conducted at the home and the grave by Rev Mr Merrilees of Blakeney.

The death occured at his home on Water Street on Tuesday, Feb 27, of Mr William Barker in his 84th year. He was born on the 8th line of Ramsay and farmed on the homestead until 1910 when he retired and lived in Almonte until the time of his death. His parents were the late James Barker and Joanne Hood.
Some 57 years ago he married Annie Coxford who survives together with one son and two daughters, namely Mr W.J. Barker of Saskatchewan; Mrs Viola Davis of Almonte and Mrs G.H Callard of Langley, B.C. There are also four brothers and two sisters, James, Robert and Alex of Ramsay; David of Seattle, Mrs W. Blanton of Seattle and Mrs A. E. Beach of Carleton Place.
The funeral took place this Thursday afternoon from the family residence on Water Street to St Mary's Vault where the remains were placed until the Spring when interment will be made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev C.D. McLellan of Bethany United Church. The pallbearers were four nephews and two grandsons, namely: Messrs John Barker, Almonte; Melville Barker, Ramsay; Herbert and Harold Snedden, Appleton; Clarence Barker of Renfrew; and Mac Davis of Almonte

The Grim Reaper's Harvest A Young Life Cut Off
After an illness from typhoid fever extending a little over six weeks, David Barker, son of Mr and Mrs Wm Barker of this town, passed away in the Rosamond Memorial hospital on Sunday last, at the age of fifteen years. Deceased was never endowed with a rugged constitution with the result that he was unable to successfully combat the fever, which ultimately resulted in his death. Besides his parents he is survived by three brothers, James at Viking, Sask., Wm at Moosomin, Sask.; and Robert at Renfrew, and two sisters, Misses Mable and Viola at home. The funeral took place on Tuesday from the residence of his father, Queen St., at 1.30 o'clock to the Eighth Line cemetery, the pallbearers being six of the chums of the deceased.

Those Who Have Passed On
James A. Barker
A well-known resident of Ramsay, and latterly of Almonte, died at the home of his son, Robert, in Carleton Place on Friday morning, Jan 16th, in the person of James A. Barker. He was in his 93rd year. Mr Barker was born in Ramsay Township on March 5th, 1860, a son of the late James Barker and his wife, Joan Hood. On April 27th, 1887, he married Isabella McPhail who predeceased him in 1940. For upwards of eight years he lived retired in Almonte with his son, Jack and Mrs Barker. For the last two months he was with Mr and Mrs Robert Barker in Carleton Place. He leaves three daughters and two sons, namely: Mrs H.B. Gilpin (Kate) of Smiths Falls; Miss Margaret Barker of Carleton Place; Miss Flora Barker of Renfrew; Robert of Carleton Place and Jack of Almonte. A son, James, died in infancy. There are also a sister and a brother, Mrs Helen Blanton of Seattle, Wash., and Mr Alex Barker of Almonte; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon from the residence of Mr Jack Barker, Union Street, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Service was conducted by Rev H.C. Wolfraim, pastor of Almonte United Church, at the home and Rev Thos McCord of Carleton Place officiated at the Cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs Geo Robertson, D.M. Campbell, Melville Barker, Aubrey Nesbitt, Kenneth Drummond and Jas Anderson. Mr Barker's farm was located at Blakeney. He was a successful farmer and a outstanding plowman. Like most men of a past generation who excelled in this agricultural activity, he used the walking plow and scorned the kind that the operator rides on. The year he reached 80 years of age, Mr Barker did all the plowing on his farm which is an outstanding achievement seldom equalled, especially in this mechanized era.

Robert Barker
ALMONTE, Dec 6 - (Special) - Robert Baker, well-known farmer of Ramsay, died on Thursday. He had been confined to his bed for the past six months. Born in Ramsay, 79 years ago, he was a son of the late James Barker and his wife, Joan Hood, early Ramsay settlers. He farmed all his life in Ramsay. In 1905 he was married to Miss Jessie Coxford, of Blakeney. Surviving in addition to his widow, are two daughters, Miss Thelma, at home, Mrs James Steele, of Ramsay, and one son, Melville Barker, at home; two brothers, James and Alex Barker, of Blakeney, and two sisters, Mrs Wm Blanton, of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs W. Beach, of Carleton Place. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon from his late residence and interment will be made in the Auld Kirk cemetery.

Funeral of Robert Barker
Fitting tribute to the memory of Mr Robert Barker was paid by a large circle of friends and relatives who attended his funeral which was held from the family residence on the sixth line of Ramsay on Saturday afternoon. Mr Barker was in his 79th year and his death occurred on Dec 5th, following an illness of five months. Rev W.J. Scott of Bethany United Church, conducted the service at the home and at the grave. Interment was made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were John R. Reid, Thomas Erskine, Wm Philip, Thos Coxford, Herbert Coxford and Alex Cochran. The many beautiful floral tributes included wreaths from Ramsay U.F.W.O. and the Ladies' Aid of Blakeney United Church.

Mrs Margaret Beach
The funeral of mrs Margaret Beach was held Wednesday afternoon from the Alan R. Barker funeral home, Carleton Place, to the auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte , for interment. Rev D. C Munro conducted the service.
Mrs Beach died at her residence on Moore Street on Monday morning in her 87th. year.
The former Margaret Barker, she was born at Blakeney, and was a daughter of the late James Barker and Joann Hood. She was educated in that district and later married Arthur Beach who died some years ago.
Mrs Beach lived in the west for some time before returning to Carleton Place. She attended Memorial Park United Church and was a member of the Women'sAssosiation.
She is survived by two brothers, James and Alex, of Almonte, and a sister, Mrs Helen Blanton, Seatle, Washington.

Mr Alexander Barker
Following a lengthy illness, Mr Alexander Barker passed away in Rosamond Memorial Hospital, Almonte on Monday, April 22. He was 87 years of age. Born on the family homestead on the 9th line of Ramsay Township, he was a son of the late Mr James Barker and his wife, Joanne Hood. He was the second youngest of a family of nine. He received his education at Bennie's Corners school and farmed successfully all his life until his retirement in 1944. In 1906 he married Miss Jessie McGill of Pakenham Township. Following their retirement from farming they moved to Almonte. Mrs Barker passed away in 1952. Mr Barker was a quiet, friendly man who had a wide circle of friends who mourn his passing. In his day he was a familiar figure in the show ring at the Ottawa Valley fall fairs where he exhibited his Clydesdale horses. In later years, he took a great interest in horticulture. He was a former member of Blakeney United Church where he served as elder and latterly was a member of Almonte United Church. He leaves one daughter, Vera, Mrs Lorne Ritchie of Almonte, one grandson, David and one sister, Mrs Nellie Blanton of Seattle, Sask. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. Rev J. Ray Anderson, minister of Almonte United Church, officiated and burial was in the family plot in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Messrs Ed Rose, Wilfred Lindsay, E.S. She resided in Seattle for 55 years. She was a member of Laurelhurst United Presbyterian Church and the Elderbloom Club. She was the mother of Harold Blanton of Packwood; Mrs. Martha Cournau of Tacoma; Mrs. Hazel McKenzie of Sacramento, California and Mrs. Gladys May of San Francisco, California She also had five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She died on April 24, 1960 in a hospital in Seattle, Washington. She had lived at 2023 43rd Avenue North. Funeral arrangements were by the Home Undertaking Company with cremation to follow.

?/b?It is scarcely a year since Mary Alice Barker left her father's home as the bride of Mr. W. G. Chamberlain, of the 6th. line, Ramsay, and already her friends are called upon tomourn her loss. Mrs. Chamberlain, who was the daughter of Mr. Wm. Barker, of the 8th. line, Ramsay, had been ill for some weeks with heart trouble. She gradually grew worse till the day of her death on Monday last. mrs. Chamberlain wa only 19 years of age and her death is a ppeculiarly sad one. The funeral on Wednesday to the eighth line cemetery was very large. It was conducted by Rev. J. H. Miller, of the methodist church, andRev. Ferguson Millar, Mrs. Chamberlain's former pastor. The occurance is one of unusual sadness, and has called forth sympathy for those to whom bereavement has come.

Mrs Anne Mabel Callaid, wife of Mr. G. H. Callard, 21767 Simmonds Road, Murrayville, passed away In Langley Memorial Hospital on Wednesday of last week. She was in her 65th year. Mrs. Callard was born in Almonte, Ontario, and came to Murrayville 18 years ago from Sask. An active community lady, Mrs. Callard took special interest in the Langley chapter No 50 of the Order of the Eastern Star and in the Missionary Society and Womens Auxiliary of Sharon United Church.
Funeral Services were under the auspices of the OES, Langley Chapter No 50, in Sharon United Church on Friday, July 8th, at 1 30 oclock. Rev. H I Hare officiated and the service was .followed by cremation. Columbia Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements. Rather than have flowers, Mrs Callard had requested befoie her death that donations be sent to either the Sharon United Church building fund or the Womens Missionary Society.
Mourning her passing are her husband; a daughter, Laura, at home; a son, CFO John, RCN, at Dartmouth, NS, three grandchildren; a brother, William, in Moosomin, Sask , and a sister, Viola, at Kingston, Ontario.
Pall bearers for the funeral service were R. M. Johnson, A Anderson, B. Anderson, W. Mattick, R Rump and R R. Fox, all past masters of Eureka Lodge No 103, AF. and AM.

After an illness from typhoid fever extending a little over six weeks, David Barker, son of Mr and Mrs William Barker of htis town, passed away in the rosamond Memorial hospital on sunday last, at the age of fifteen years. Deceased was never endowed with a rugged constitution with the result that he was unable to successfully combat the fever, which ultimately resulted in his death. Besides his parents he is survives by three brothers, James at Viking Saskatchewan, William at Moosomin, Sask; and Robert at Renfrew, and two sisters, Misses Mable and Viola at home. The funeral took place on Tuesay from the residence of his father, Queen St., at 1:30 o'clock to the Eighth Line cemetery, the pallbearers being six of the chums of the deceased.

Final tribute was paid to the memory of Mr Robert Burns Barker at his funeral which took place on Saturday, October 10, 1970, from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., Carleton Place, where the service was held at 2 p.m., with Rev K.J. Murray officiating. Interment was in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. John Alexander Barker
John Alexander (Jack) Barker died suddenly at his home in Almonte on Sunday February 17, 1980, at the age of 81. He was a son of James A. Barker and Isabella McPhail of Blakeney. On June 20, 1942, he married Evelyn Stewart, who survives. Also surviving are his sisters, Katie Gilpin of Smiths Falls, Margaret Barker of Carleton Place, and Flora Barker of Renfrew. His brother Robert predeceased him. Mr Barker was a veteran of World War I, having enlisted in the 72nd (Queens) Battery RCHA. He was employed in the office of the Rosamond Woolen Company for 44 years, and before his retirement was Registrar of Deeds for North Lanark for nine years. At the time of his death he was an Honourary Elder of Almonte United Church, and Honourary Director of Almonte General Hospital. In 1965 he was given an Award of Merit by the Board of Almonte General Hospital in recognition of his many years of community service. He had been in ill-health for several years but was blessed with many faithful friends who brightened his days with their frequent visits and telephone calls. Visitation was at Gamble & Comba Funeral Home. The funeral service was conducted in Almonte United Church on Tuesday, February 19, with Rev Archie Manson officiating, followed by cremation at Pinecrest Crematorium, Ottawa. Interment will take place at Auld Kirk Cemetery in the spring. The pallbearers were George Gomme, John Steele, Joseph Granich, Wallace Barker, Milton Stewart and Norman Hogg.

BARKER, Alan Robert (1919-2005)
Peacefully in hospital at Carleton Place, Ontario on Thursday, October 6, 2005 in his 86th year. Dearly loved by his wife of 58 years Melba Barker (nee Hogarth). Treasured father of Janet Messervey (Rob). Much loved grandfather of Maggie. Survived by his sister Isobel Nesbitt (Aubrey). Alan will be fondly remembered by his numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his cherished son James Alan Barker, and his siblings Helen Drummond, Wallace Barker and Ruth McDougall. Alan's life was filled with devotion to his family, friends and community. He was a respected businessman and founder of the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home where he worked well into his eighties. Alan served in World War II Royal Canadian Corps of Signals from 1939-1945, M.I.D. Alan was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 192. He was the recipient of the distinguished Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship awarded by the Queen Mother in 1979 and was named Carleton Place Business Person of the Year in 1993. Friends may call at his funeral home 19 McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place, on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., Monday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. thence to Zion-Memorial United Church for the Funeral Service at 2 p.m. Interment Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. Fisherman drowns in Mississippi River
A 57-year-old Carleton Place man drowned, late Sunday afternoon, after his boat capsized as he attempted to anchor it in the fast-flowing Mississippi River. Dead is Wallace Keith Barker of 25 Charles Street. Carleton Place Police Chief Ray McIsaac said Monday that Barker had apparently launched his boat from a spot near the sewage plant to do some fishing. He moved to a position behind William Street. About 5 pm he attempted to stop the boat by throwing the anchor out the back into the current, McIsaac said. The pull of the current on the anchor forced the back of the boat into the water, it quickly filled and capsize. Barker, who was not wearing a lifejacket, was thrown into the water and was unable to swim to shore. Other fisherman on shore witnessed the mishap heard cries for help and alerted authorities, but by the time police and Carleton Place Ocean Wave Fire Volunteers arrived it was too late. One witness to the tragedy was Bill Stewart who lives on Highway 29 near the Appleton cutoff. Overturned He said he was "shooting the breeze with a young lad," while he fished and took note of the boat as it made its way up river. He went back to his fishing and when he looked again (just after first noticing the craft) all he could see was a floating object "either a gas can or life-jacket." The Stewart noticed the stricken man trying to make it for shore through the fast-flowing, ice cold water. He said he seemed to be making way, but suddenly disappeared beneath the dark waters. Another local resident, Dave Stanley, was on shore and saw the boat overturn. He told the police that he quickly launched his own boat and chased Barker, who was being carried along by the current. However Stanley was unable to get to him as he disappeared beneath the surface. Police, firefighters and civilian volunteers used a variety of craft to search the river and the shoreline all the way from the area of the tragedy to Mississippi Wonderland, opposite the Mississippi Golf Club Scores of people lined both sides of the river to watch the grim search, but nothing was found and police called off the effort until Monday morning. Some searching resumed as early as 6 am, with fire volunteers having been asked to come back in the morning with their boats to aid in the task. Police set stop-logs in as the dam to cut down on the current in order to aid in the effort.
Body Found
A full search was underway by 7:45 am and half and hour later the body was discovered in five feet of water near the end of William Street (not far from where the tragedy occurred) by Deputy Fire Chief Don Ferrill. Diver from the Ontario Provincial Police would have been called had the initial search failed Monday. Lanark County Coroner Dr M.N. White of Carleton Place attended at the scene on Monday morning. An autopsy was performed and drowning was officially cited as the cause of death. A police department spokesman said an inquest in unlikely. Wallace Barker is survived by his mother Mrs Georgina Barker, one brother Alan and three sisters Ruth (Mrs Allan McDougall); Isobel (Mrs Aubrey Nesbitt) and Helen (Mrs Kenneth J. Drummond) all of Carleton Place. Remains rested at the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place until this afternoon when service was held in the chapel at 3 pm Interment Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte.
