Thomas Eli Blakeney
Thomas Eli Blakeney, better known as Tommy, 229 Ann Street, a long time resident of Almonte, died in the Almonte General Hospital on Tuesday, May 19th, following a lengthy illness. Born in Paris, Ontario, on June 12th, 1890, he was a son of the late John and Emma Blakeney and was in his 80th year at the time of his passing. For a time the family lived in Toronto, coming to Almonte 53 years ago, when he took a job working for his father, who was manager of the former Yorkshire Shoddy Mill, located at the foot of Mill Street, where he stayed until the mill closed a number of years ago. In the late 1920's and early 1930's he was trainer for the Almonte Senior Hockey team when hockey was at its height here. He was an ardent fisherman and was quite fond of gardening. Mr Blakeney was a member of the Almonte Volunteer Fire Brigade for 35 years, retiring with the rank of lieutenant. Fifty-seven years ago, in Toronto, he married the former Lillian Collinson, who survives along with four daughters and two sons, namely Grace (Mrs Boyd Hurdis), Norway Bay, Doris (Mrs Lawrence Morton), Almonte, Thelma, (Mrs Harold Robinson), Carleton Place, Earl, Almonte, Murray, Peterborough, Jean (Mrs Vern Le Blanc), Ottawa. One son, Donald is deceased. In addition he is survived by two sisters, Annas (Mrs Bill Pikard), Toronto and Edna (Mr Wilmer Illingworth), Almonte; three brothers, Bill of Almonte, Art and Jack of Simcoe. The funeral service, conducted by Rev R. McCrea, of the Almonte United Church, was held at the Comba Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon, May 21st, when a large number of friends and relatives were on hand to pay their last respects to a well-known resident of the town. The following members of the Almonte Fire Brigade acted as pallbearers: Durward Washburn, John LaMaistre, Frank Honeyborne, Ross Stanley, Keith Blakeney and Frank Lowe. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery.
Thomas married Lillian Grace Collinson in 1914. Lillian was born on 13 Apr 1896 in Toronto, York County, Ontario, Canada; died on 25 Apr 1988 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
