Dies In Ottawa at 97
?/b?A former mayor and warden of Lanark County died in Ottawa on Saturday at the age of 97 years in the person of George Wellington Willoughby. He was a native of Athens, Leeds County, and was born there when the place was known as Famersville. He was a son of William Willoughby and his wife, Eleanor Stringer. The family moved here in 1865 and Mr Willoughby became a stone mason and with his father built many buildings here and in the district around. It is understood they were mason contractors for St Paul's Church, St John's Church, Zion Church, Carleton Place. the Methodist (now United) Church at Appleton and Mr Willoughby is thought to have been one of those who worked on the stone bridge which is located on Main Street and is one of the most ornamental of its kind in the country. He held many posts in town in the old days having served in the council in various capacities and while reeve he attended county council, and as stated before, became warden, He was also a fire chief in Almonte during the time he lived here. The files of the Gazette show that Mr Willoughby made a trip to the West returning 50 years ago this week. At the time he thought of locating there but changed his mind. He engaged in many lines of work besides contracting, during his long lifetime, and was in mercantile business for a while. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Isabella Simpson in 1949 and by one daughter and five brothers and four sisters. Of the immediate family two survive ? Mr Graydon Willoughby and Myrtle of Ottawa. The late Dr J. K., W.G., and Richard Kelly were nephews of Mr Willoughby. He moved to Ottawa in 1910 and not many of the younger generation in Almonte remember him. He used to be an ardent curler and for a long time was associated with one of the clubs in the Capital. He was a member of Mississippi Masonic Lodge and of the United Church. Funeral Services were held for him at his home in Ottawa; a Masonic Service at the Comba Funeral Home in Almonte and Rev J. Ray Anderson conducted the committal service at the Auld Kirk Cemetery.

George married Isabella Simpson in 1884. Isabella (daughter of Charles Simpson and Louisa Walker) was born in 1863 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 7 Jul 1949 in Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. beloved husband of Bessie Manahan, in his 90th year, father of Mrs Ruth Brown, Ottawa, and grandfather of Gregory. Resting Hulse and Playfair, Central Chapel, 315 McLeod St. Service on Saturday at 9 a.m. Interment Capital Memorial Gardens.

Graydon married Bessie Victoria Manahan in 1919. Bessie was born on 20 May 1894 in Lanark Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 6 Jun 1976 in Ottawa, Ottawa Municipality, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 8 Jun 1976 in Capital Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Ottawa, Ottawa Municipality, Ontario, Canada. Attended by many friends and relatives the funeral of Robena May Willoughby, wife of George M. Gemmill, took place at Almonte on Thursday January 2nd. The Late Mrs Gemmill who was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs George W. Willoughby of Ottawa, was born in Almonte and with the exception of a few years in Ottawa, had spent her life in her home town. She was married to r. George M. Gemmill on Nov 7th, 1916 and is survived by her husband, one son Arthur, her parents and sister Myrtle and brother Graydon. The late Mrs. Gemmill was actively identified with church work in which she took a great interest, holding office in the Ladies' Aid and Missionary Societies of Trinity United Church of which she was a member. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Andrew McLauchlin, assisted by Rev. Mr. C.D. McLellan of Bethany United Church, interment being made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Almonte. The pallbearers were Dr. J.K. Kelly, W.G. Kelly, Thorpe Kelly and R.D. Kelly. Numerous floral offerings and messages of sympathy were received including wreaths from Trinity Church, The Ladies' Aid, The Almonte High School and Mississippi Lodge A.F.& A.M.

Robena married George Murray Gemmill on 7 Nov 1916. George (son of John Gemmill and Mary Murray) was born in 1887 in Gananoque, Leeds and Grenville County, Ontario, Canada; died on 17 May 1950 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
