    FLORENCE--Longtime Fairfield area farmer and World War II veteran Alfred Edgar Evans, 85, died Friday at his daughter's home in Florence of natural causes.

    Cremation has taken place under the direction of Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville. Graveside services are 11:30 Monday at the Fairfield Cemetery. Donations are suggested to the Fairfield Drop-In Center.

    Evans was born Nov. 9, 1914, in Fairview, where he grew up and received his education.

    During the Depression, he hopped freight trains to find work. After the Depression he worked on ranches in eastern Montana and often spoke of his experiences catching and breaking wild horses.

    He met Jean Huntsinger in Great Falls and they were married on Aug. 21, 1941.

    He joined the Army at age 32, one of the older men to sign up. He enjoyed sharing his experience of helping to save the Lipizzan Stallions. Evans was discharged in 1946.

    The couple then moved to Brady. They lived and farmed east of Conrad until 1954. In December of 1954 they bought a farm east of Fairfield. He continued to farm the land at Conrad and Fairfield until the mid-1970s. The couple moved from the farm in 1994.

    Evans was a member of the VFW and served as commander. He was involved with the senior citizens group, serving on the board and delivering meals on wheels. He was named Senior Citizen of the Year and enjoyed playing cribbage at the center.

    His wife died in 1996. He had lived with his daughter in Florence since May of 1997.

    Survivors include a son, Dale Evans of Seattle; daughter, Betty McBride of Florence; brothers, Albert Evans of Kalispell and Harvey Evans of Littleton, Colo.; three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.--Great Falls Tribune, Oct. 8, 2000, Pg. 2-M

    Alfred married Jean Louise Huntsinger on 21 Aug 1941. Jean was born on 8 Mar 1919 in Conrad, Pondera County, Montana, United States; died on 2 Jan 1996 in Great Falls, Cascade County, Montana, United States; was buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery, Fairfield, Teton County, Montana, United States.
