As a run-down clock gradually ceases to tell off the passing hoursso did the life of Mrs Robt Duncan gradually ceases to be, when this Thursday morning her spirit passed back to Him who gave it. Born in Ireland over eighty-two years ago Eliza McLinton came with her parents to Canada, they settled in Goulbourn, where the deceased spent her life until her marriage about fifty years ago to Mr. Robert Duncan of Ramsay. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Duncan took up their residence on the Eleventh line, where their home was until they were called away. To them seven children were born. These are Robt and David at Cartwright, Man; James and Margaret (Mrs Geo Robertson, Winnipeg; Mary (Mrs J.K. Simpson), Ashton; Alex, New York and William at home. Mrs Duncan is the last member of her fathers family. The deceased was of a quiet and retiring nature, but a good neighbour and one respected by all. She was for many years a consistent member of St. Andrews Church, Almonte. the funeral will take place on Saturday at 2 o'clock from her late residence to the eighth line cemetery.

?/b?It is noted that this area was covered by large trees of mixed forest oak, elm etc. some several feet in circumference when the settlers first arrived. A fire went through the area some time after settlement and, combined with cearing and lumbering activities, removed this vegetation. The current vegetation is mature but not of the size reported.

1st mail delivery to Cartwright was 1882, earlier Clearwater, 16 miles away.

Present owner of Section is Ken Barkman (1979), Member of the Mennonite Church of God in Christ. Bought the farm from Earl Trembath. it was a treed property with a small amount of cultivated land. Strawberries and broilers.

(William) Bill and Flora (Sommerville) East (to Cartwright in 1905), lived on 29-3-14 for 22 years, then bought section 19-2-14, known as the Duncan Estate, a most beautiful farm, and lived there for 22 years. Son Murray farmed with them. They owned and raised standard bred race horses. In 1966 Bill and Flora retired to Killernay, MB.

Thomas Mowbray, born West Linton Scotland, came to Canada about 1906. Moved to Manitoba 1908 and worked for Bob Duncan for a short time.

The Badger River cuts deeply into the rolling prarie landscape at, and near, the Old Cartwright location and through the farm. A large portion of the Duncan section is occupied by river bed and the steep banks. Further north is a marked buffalo jump site where hunts were conducted.

On Robert's E 1/2 section, there is a deep V valley extending back from the river and we were told that the door to the 'cave' in the river bank was still there when Ken McKibbin was a young man. He is now in 80's but remembers the Duncans. In this V valley there is a quicksand swampy area that never freezes and into which farm animals (team of horses) have been lost. We walked along the river bank and up onto the hillside but the cave was in a location further from the river. The flat area along the river was the site of the Sunday School picnics. Robert's side of the river had more gradual access, David's opposite on the W1/2 of the section has very steep banks.

Robert's house, first one of small logs, was located on the SE corner of the property near Keith Barkman's house.

The Boundary Commission Trail (wagon wheel ruts) are still evident to the east of the road near the bridge on the hill behind the cairn for Old Cartwright.;;

(Research):From Letter from Art Thompson, Box 334, Cartwright, MB dated 16 Nov 1973.
Robert went to Manitoba in 1878 and in the spring of 1879 went to 'Old Cartwright' (a location which wasn't settled then - section 18-2-14 West of 1st meridian)

He squatted on section N 1/2 section of 19-2-14 W of which he later purchased the north half. Although Robert squatted on this section in 1879, he didn't register immediately and the official entry date was 8 May, 1883.

His first dwelling was on the banks of Badger Creek. In later years he lived on the southeast quarter of Sec 19-2-14 until he died which was Wednesday evening 13 October 1937. He was in ailing health for over a year and the immediate cause of death was pneumonia. Age at time of death 80 yrs, 8 mos, 15 days.

Robert remained single. He is buried in Cartwright cemetery but there is no marker for his grave. At the time of death he was survived by three brothers and three sisters - Alex, William and James, Mrs. GA Robertson, Mrs. Simpson and Mrs. L Caskey.
Mr. Duncan was a shy retiring man and took no active part in community affairs but was well liked and respected. Mr. Duncan was one of the earliest pioneer settlers in this area.

First Cartwright settlers (Sutherlands [Andrew, SE 1/4 30-2-14 10 Jun 1879; and Mrs. Andrew forest tree claim, on SW 28-2-14], McKibbins [John P. NE 30-2-14], Duncans [Robert N 1/2 19-2-14, registered 8 May 1883] and Waughs [J C S 1/2 18-2-14, 20 Oct 1881]) arrived via the Boundry Commission Trail with teams of oxen, Red River carts and supplies. David Cochrane settled on SE 7-2-14 but is not noted as arriving at this time. (sourced from Dept of Lands and Natural Resources) The McKibbin [site of school] and Waugh sections [in river valley] became the site for Old Cartwright

Received his education and a degree in civil engineering in Ontario.

"He was a lover of nature, an honest man, and always willing to give a helping hand. He helped many settlers to build their first home, mostly of logs." He was a successful farmer and lived on his farm until his death in 1937. His brother Alex lived with him for a few years before going west to Penticton, BC.

Died:
Robert never married. His story is well told in the local history book "Memories Along the Badger Revisited" (1985) page 240-241. Robert's birthday is listed in his death registration (#1937-051112) with Manitoba Vital Statistics. His brother David Duncan is also buried in the Cartwright Cemetery.

Ramsay lost one of its best known farmers on Tuesday, January 28th, 1941, in the death of Mr William John Duncan. he was in his 84th year and passed away on the farm, 11th line of Ramsay, where he was born and spent his long life.Mr Duncan was a son of the late Robert Duncan and his wife Elizabeth McLinton. In 1905 he was married to the former Mina Simpson of Goulbourn, who predeceased him in 1935. He is survived by two sons, James K. Duncan of Ashton and Robert J. on the homestead. There are also brothers and sisters, namely, James of Winnipeg; Alexander in Penticton, B.C.; Mrs James Caskey, Winnipeg; Mrs Geo Robertson, Penticton, B.C. and Mrs Kidd Simpson, Ashton. The late Mr Duncan was one of this district's most substantial citizens. He lived quietly and industriously and never sought public office. He was a member of Bethany United Church, Almonte. He was a good neighbour and will be greatly missed by a wide circle of friends. The funeral will be held from the family residence on Friday afternoon at 2:30 (Standard Time) to the Auld Kirk Cemetery.

Funeral from the Penticton Funeral Chapel and was conducted by Elder W. A. Clemenson fo the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Internment in Lakeview Cemetery. (Old section #466A - currently 2011, overgrown with a large lilac tree, small ground marker found - Maggie Robertson).
She had resided in Penticton since 1910, from Winnipeg where her husband had been a contractor.
Mourned by sons, Sgt. R.H. Robertson RCOC and J.C. Robertson of Vancouver, brothers James of Winnipeg and Alex of Penticton, three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Pall bearers were Don and Paul Donesky and Jacob and William Vaselenko.

1888 - The first school in Cartwright was built in 1888 and the first teacher was David Duncan at a salary of $35 per month. "Mr. Duncan was a splendid teacher and greatly loved by all his pupils. He had planned to study for the ministry and although he did one term in college was unable to complete his education."

Walter Laidlaw, born at Yair Lodge, Selkirk Cty, Scotland, 29 Jul 1876, came to Canada by steamship in spring 1904. Arrived in Cartwright in fall and worked for David Duncan for approximately seven years.

George Charles Richens. born 1879, arrived in Cartwright in 1891 from London England under the Dr. Barnardo's Immigration scheme. Worked for both David and Robert Duncan during his youth. Later with CNR. Son Lewis, married to Evelyn Fluker, lived on old David Duncan farm since 1934. George and wife Sarah Jane Pinkerton, retired to farm in 1944. Sold farm in 1946 after a heart attack.

To Cartwright District in 1883 and taught in West Derby, Crystal River, Haseldell, Chesterville, Howard and Cartwright. Students included Bishop Richardson of NB and Robert Stead of Ottawa.
Served on municipal council before the formation of the municipality of Roblin. Purchased farm northwest of Cartwright in 1895, year of his marriage where he farmed until about 1932.

Was superintendent of the Presbyterian Sunday School, served on Bd of Managers and Elder in Presbyterian Church, later elder of the United Church

Survived by Robert - Cartwright, Alex and Mrs. Robertson - Penticton BC; William and Mrs. Simpson - Almonte; Jas. Duncan and Mrs Caskey of Winnipeg.

One of his greatest pleasures was preparing for the annual Sunday School picnic which was always held on his grounds. "It was a fun day. Everone could have a boat ride on the river and pick the large yellow water lilies. There were games, races and plenty of food."

David died on his farm in 1936 and is buried in the Cartwright Cemetery.After David's death Hannah made her home with Robert Duncan on his farm until his death. She then lived with the William Chesneys for a few years. Later she lived with Mr. and Mrs. William Herd and died in 1942.

David Duncan Passes to Well-Earned Reward.
One by one our pioneer settlers are departing this earth, and as they in turn go one less is left of the hardy pioneers who endured hardships such as we of today do not know, to blaze the trail for those to follow. On this occasion Cartwright community mourns the passing of one such of these as will be kindly remembered by a great many friends, in the person of Mr. David Duncan, who passed away early Tuesday morning, November 24th. in his 73rd. year, after several months of patient suffering. The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the United Church of Cartwright cemetery. Rev. W.A. McKim Young will be in charge.

Mr. Duncan was born in Almonte, Ont., on March 29th, 1864. In the year 1883 he came west to Cartwright district, and for a number of years followed the teaching profession, serving West Derby, Crystal River, Hazeldell, Chesterville, Howard and Cartwright. Not a few of the youth of that day under his tutorship are now filling important positions in the public life of the Dominion, two of whom we recall being, Bishop Richardson, of New Brunswick, and Robert Stead of Ottawa. For several terms in the early days Mr. Duncan served on the municipal council, before the formation of the present Municipality of Roblin. In 1895, the year of his marriage Mr. Duncan purchased a farm north-west of Cartwright, where he and Mrs. Duncan followed farming and made heir home until five years ago.

Prior to Union, Mr. Duncan, for many years, was Superintendent of the Presbyterian Sunday School and many men in our district today recall with deep satisfaction his leadership, and the example he set them still remains warm in their memories. They are better citizens as the result of their associations with him in their boyhood days. We no of no greater tribute that can be paid a man than that his christian life in generous measure was given in the interest of the boys and girls who were fortunate enough to be associated with him. For many years Mr. Duncan was active in church work, serving on the Board of Managers and an Elder in the Presbyterian Church and latterly as an Elder in the United Church.

Forty one years ago he was married to Hannah, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Wray, who survives him, along with the following brothers and sisters, Robert Duncan, Cartwright, Alex Duncan and Mrs. A.G. Robertson, Penticton, B.C. William Duncan, Almonte, Ont., Mrs Kidd Simpson Ashton, Ont. Jas. Duncan and Mrs L. Caskey, of Winnipeg.

The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved family in their great loss.

Could not find a marked grave in area indicated by cemetery records. Nearby is a marker for ?u?John Gray Duncan?/u? who passed away in the Penticton hospital on 5 Jan 1949. In his obituary, it is indicated that he was born in Scotland, lived in Penticton area for 38 years, died at age 85, and was survived by 1 brother, 2 sisters in England.

Alexander articled in Law and left Almonte for New York. Little is really known of his activities and events there. But Alexander became stone deaf and returned to his elder brother Robert at Cartwright, Manitoba in 1914. He remained there for some few years and then left for Penticton, B.C. Little was heard from him after he left. He died and was buried there, the actual date unknown but believed to be the in early fifties. Alexander never married.

The funeral of John Robert Drummond was held Friday afternoon from the Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Avenue West, where Rev. E. C. Kelloway conducted the service. Interment took place in Pine Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Drummond died at his home, Miguel Street, May 3 in his 79th year. He was born in Goulburn Township, son of the late Malcolm Drummond and his wife, Elizabeth McEwan. He was yard foreman for many years with the Canadian Pacific Railway at Carleton Place.
He was married in 1902 to the former Catherine McLinton who survives him. Other survivors are two sons, Gordon and Arthur, and a daughter, Mrs. J. E. Drynan, of Carleton Place.

The death occurred on Monday of Mrs J.F. Presley at the age of 49 years. She passed away at the Brockville hospital after being a patient there for a fortnight. Three weeks before that she had taken seriously ill, and little hope was entertained for her recovery. Her maiden name was Isabella May Drummond, daughter of the late Malcolm, of Ashton and Mrs Malcolm Drummond of Brockville. In 1900 she was married to Mr J.F. Presley and three years after the young couple moved to Cobalt. Mrs Presley was the first white women in Cobalt and had many interesting stories to tell of her early married life there. Mr and Mrs Presley stayed at Cobalt until 1918 when they removed to Almonte. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband and six children, one child having died in Cobalt. They are: Lorne, Raeburn, Cecil, Muriel, Winnie and Hazel. her mother, four sisters and three brothers also survive. The funeral, which was very largely attended took place on Wednesday to the Presbyterian Cemetery on the eighth line of Ramsay. Rev J.D. McCrae, her minister, conducted the services. The pallbearers were; Messrs Robert Tosh, John Andrews, Wm Rodger, Lester Jamieson, James Drynan and John Blakeley. The deepest sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved family.

DUNCAN - Suddenly at his residence, R.R. 3, Almonte on Sunday, January 24th, 1971. Robert John Duncan. Dear son of the late William Duncan and the late Mina Simpson. Beloved husband of Elizabeth Ila Coxford, dear father of Donald, at home Nancy and Janice, Kingston. Dear brother of James K., Chesterville, in his 62nd year. Rested at the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin Street, Almonte, where services were held on Wednesday, January 27th, at 2 p.m. Entombment Auld Kirk Cemetery Vault. Interment in the Spring.

Robert John Duncan
The sudden death of Robert Duncan occurred at his residence, R.R. 3, Almonte, on Sunday, January 24th, 1971.
Born in Ramsay Township on January 26, 1909, he was born the son of the late William J. Duncan and the late Mina Simpson. Throughout his lifetime he farmed on the 11th line of Ramsay.
Mr Duncan was married June 14, 1941, to the former Elizabeth Coxford of Almonte.
He was a member of Almonte United Church, a member of the session of the Church, and served on the Auld Kirk Cemetery Board. Also a member of the Masonic Lodge No 147. He was an ardent curler for a great many years.
Survived besides his wife are one son Donald at home, twin daughters, Nancy, Queen's University, Kingston, and Janice, School of Nursing, K.G.H., Kingston; a brother James K. of Chesterville.
A Masonic service was held at the funeral home, Tuesday evening at 8 p.m.
the funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 27, 1971. Service was conducted by Rev McCrea of Almonte United Church.
Pallbearers were Morden Duncan, Charles Symington, Roy Thompson, Lloyd Reid, George A. Thompson and Ross Craig.
Entombment was made in the Auld Kirk Vault. Interment in the spring.

?/b?Fairview Manor resident Eliza Eviline Simpson died in the Almonte General Hospital Jan 30. She was 90 years old.
She was born Nov 17, 1901 in Goulbourn Township in Carleton County, the daughter of the late John Kidd Simpson and his late wife Mary Jane Duncan.
Miss Simpson never married and spent her life working as a piano teacher. She was a member of the United Church of Canada, Ashton Charge (U. C. W.) choir, (C. B. C., etc).
She is survived by her niece Norma Kathleen Simpson (wife of James C. D. Simpson) of Trenton, and grand nephewws, James Kidd Simpson of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Danny Ormond Simpson of Stoney Creek, Carl Richard Simpson of Thunder Bay and Scott David Simpson of Hamilton.
Miss Simpson was predeceased by her brothers Joshua Ormond and James Garland Simpson as well as her sisters Zelma and Eliza Mary Simpson. She was also predeseased be her nephew James Carl Simpson.
The funeral took place at the Ashton United Church Feb. 9 with the Rev. James Baldwin officiating. Remains resting at Kerry's Funeral Home with interment in the Dewar Cemetery in Ashton in the spring.
The palbearers were James Simpson, Danny Simpson, Scott Simpson, Bill Simpson, Vern Menzies and Clarence Lewis.
