The many friends had scarcely returned from following the late Mr. Snedden to the grave before they were called upon to wend their way thither again to mark their respect for the memory of Mr. A. Stevenson, J. P. who has gone over to join the 'majority'. The deceased gentleman came to Canada from Glasgow, where he was born, with other members of his mother's family, together with his stepfather, the parent of the late Mr. Galbraith of whom the deceased was a half brother , in the year 1821. The family settled in Ramsay and at that time our late townsman, was about nine years old. He resided with his family for six or seven years and then went to Montreal, where he learned the trade of a cooper, remaining there about seven years. When he removed to Carleton Place and commenced a cooperage for himself. He followed the trade for two or three years , his shop, being on the site of Savallees hotel. In 1833 he married and moved to his own farm on the second Concession of Ramsay, where he remained until 1870 when he came to Almonte and has since resided here. Mr. Stevenson was a member of the township council from 1852-1856 and was for many years a Justice of the Peace. For over thirty years he was Pork Inspector for this district. After 49 years of married life he has left a widow who feels her loss keenly and a family of 2 sons and 3 daughters. The deceased was a very quiet unobtrusive man and was consequently not as widely known as many less worthy, but in all various positions, he was called on to fill, he brought a strong conscientiousness combining with a good share of common sense to bear and thus succeeded in establishing a claim to the respect of those with whom he was brought in contact , owing to frequent attacks of asthma he was latterly confined much to the house but he was not long confined to his bed. He died on Sunday morning last, at the ripe age of 77 years and was followed to the grave on Tuesday by a very large number of people of the town and country those who knew the late Mr. Stevenson were conscious that he felt severely the death of the late Mr. Galbraith from the shock of which he never recovered.

Alexander married Margaret Jane Smith in 1833. Margaret was born in 1805 in Airdre, North Lanarkshire, Scotland; died on 14 Jan 1889 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 16 Jan 1889 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. ?b?Norman Stevenson?/b?
Mr Norman Stevenson has been in poor health for several months from nervous trouble, at times very seriously ill, and when the announcement of his death was made it did not come as a surprise to many, but there was sincere regret at the passing away of one who had been so long and so intimately connected with public matters in the town and county. The deceased was born in Ramsay in 1835 on the farm now occupied by Mr. I Deachman and was the eldest son of the late Alexander Stevenson. About 1873 he came to Almonte where he has since resided. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. John Rintoul of Fordyce, Huron County and Mrs. John Dunlop of Union Hall, Ramsay. Those deceased were Mrs. T. McFarlane, Carberry, Man.; And. Stevenson of Almonte, who died two years ago, and Mr Daniel Stevenson, who died at Toronto in 1869. With the passing away of his father, the late Mr. Stevenson continued to the pork-packing business which had been conducted by him, until failing health intervened. He had never married, but had lived on in the home on Queen Street, and from there the funeral took place on Tuesday, the 21st to the eighth line cemetery, where the body was placed in the vault. The pallbearers were Messers. A. M. Greig, R.A. Galbraith, John McDermott, Jas. D. Robertson, J. K. Darling, and Dr. McGregor. The services were conducted by Rev. C. H. Daly, pastor of St. John's church, of which the deceased was a member of many years standing. The late Mr. Stevenson, who was an ardent Liberal, always took an active and intelligent interest in political affairs, and was one of the most earnest workers in the interests of the party, to which he acknowledged fealty, In gatherings of workers his voice was often heard in words of wisdom and advice and his personal influence was a factor to be counted upon in accomplishing effective work during an election campaign. In municipal matters too, he was interested and for a number of years occupied a seat at the council board and assisted in the conduct of the business of the town. There are many both in the town, the township and the county, who will regret to learn of his demise.

    ?b?The late Andrew Stevenson?/b?
A year ago last fall Mr Andrew Stevenson, whose whole life had been ceaseless activity, fell on the ice and striking his side on a stone received injuries, which held him prisoner for many months and which finally developed into cancer of the liver, causing his death on Thursday last, in his 67th year. Deceased was a son of the late Alexander Stevenson, half brother of the late Daniel Galbraith and his day one of the prominent figures in Ramsay and Lanark. For twenty-five years he was a justice of the peace and many are the interesting stories of the justice and wisdom which he brought to bear on the quarrels of the pioneer days. Besides Andrew, there were two other sons - Mr Norman Stevenson, Almonte, and Daniel, who died in Toronto in 1869. Mrs Rintoul of Western Canada and Mrs John Dunlop of the 2nd line, are sisters. The late Mr Stevenson lives nearly all his life of the old homestead on the 2nd line of Ramsay, and there in 1869 he was married to Sarah Taylor, a neighbour of the same concession, who survives him. Their union was blessed with a family of nine - Mrs J Sutherland, Almonte; Mrs I. Deachman, on the homestead; Mrs C. James, Almonte; Miss Effie, teacher, Clayton; Mrs Ernest Robertson, deceased; Miss Sadie, at home; Daniel at Kingsley, Man.; Jack at Lanigan, Sask.; and Wm. at home. About eight years ago Mr Stevenson left his farm and purchasing the property on the corner of the 9th line and Almonte street from Gillies Bros., has since made his home there. Mr Stevenson was widely known all over the riding of North Lanark and wherever he was known, had won friends by his sterling worth and modest honesty. His funeral on Saturday was the parting tribute from the friends of many years.

    ?b?Daniel Stevenson?/b?
On Sunday, the 25th at his lodgings on Mutual Street, Toronto, after a short illness , Daniel Stevenson, age 24, clerk in the Provincial Secretary's department, and youngest son of Alexander Stevenson, Esq. of Ramsay. It is with deep regret we chronicle the death of this talented young man, which was unexpected and sudden. He had been ailing for a few days when he was seized with erysipelas in the head, which resulted on last Sunday morning, in his premature death. He was a young man of promising ability and was highly esteemed for his suavity of manners , and unexceptional character by all acquainted with him. His bereaved father conveyed the body home for burial arriving here on Tuesday noon. The funeral took place from the depot to the burying ground on the 8th line and was largely attended considering the short notice given. The community deeply sympathized with the family in their great affliction. May he rest in Peace.

    A Child's Peculiar Death
While partaking of dinner last Thursday noon, Willie, the five-year-old son of Mr and Mrs John Sutherland, of the Springfield section, swallowed a plum stone. Although the child had always experienced a difficultly in swallowing, this incident gave no cause for alarm until towards evening when the child became unable to swallow any food. Next morning his condition was unimproved and two town doctors were called in. They found it impossible to extricate the plum stone, which was firmly lodged in the gullet. Mr and Mrs Sutherland upon their advice took the child to St Luke's hospital, Ottawa, on the evening train, but he expired a few hours after entering the hospital. The remains were buried on Sunday last. Much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs Sutherland.
