?b?The Late Robert Young Of Ramsay?/b?
The words at the head of this paragraph will send a pang to many a heart; for, there are few men we could name more widely known in this locality, and more highly esteemed, than was Robert Young. The comparatively short illness which preceded his death, on the evening of Sabbath last, affording so little pre-intimation, will make the stroke more deeply felt. It is hard to realize that, that familiar face shall be seen among us no more, and that, that cheerful voice is now silenced for ever. Since the time Mr Young came to Ramsay, now thirty-eight years ago, he has occupied a prominent social position. He had many admirable personal qualities which made him greatly liked, and led to his acquaintance being universally sought. He was cheerful and joyous in his temperament, genial and kindly in his disposition, and more than ready to fulfil all the offices of good neighbourship. Those who had the privilege of enjoying his closer friendship can never forget his fund of real and true kindness and warmth of heart, and the tenderness and affection which he could not forbear to show when the occasion called for it. How often has that kindly face come like a benediction to lighten trouble. As an agriculturalist he was foremost amongst those who took a lively interest in the advancement of that science, his council and advice being always looked for by the Director of the N.L. Agricultural Society of which he had been always a member and very often Vice-President. He will be greatly missed in many ways, and not least in the congregation of which he was a member. Ever since the Presbyterian worship was organized in Ramsay thirty-six years ago, Mr Young had conducted the praise in his congregation. First, in the Stone Church on the eighth line in Mr Fairburn's time; then in the Free Church there; and latterly in St John's Church, Almonte. He occupied his accustomed place on the Sabbath immediately preceding that on which he died, leading the praise of the congregation and hearing the word of God for the last time in the sanctuary on earth from the lips of his son. He was of sincere though unaffected piety, taking a large-hearted interest in every good work, an liberal in his support of them. We feel his death as a public loss. And what must it be to his surviving partner, and family? If a sincere sympathy with them in the sorrow of their bereavement can be any consolation, they have this, deeply and widespread. Mr Young had just completed his sixty eight year.

Robert married Anne "Annie" Mason on 5 Jun 1825 in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, Scotland. ?b?Sudden Death?/b?
The friends and relatives of Mrs Stephen Young, of Youngville, were shocked on Friday last to learn that she had died somewhat suddenly at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr J. McLean, Montreal. Mrs Young had been in poor health for a year of two, but her end came rather suddenly at the last. About three weeks ago she went on a visit to Montreal, where she had two married daughters. Miss Young was also with her mother when she died. The family have been sorely afflicted during the past few years, this being the sixth death within the past fourteen years. Through all these sorrows the late Mrs Young was never heard to murmur or complain, but with quiet and Christian resignation accepted them as come from her Heavenly Father, who doeth all things well. The end found her fully prepared and resigned to the will of God. The body reached here on Saturday evening, accompanied by Mr and Mrs McLean and Miss Young. The funeral on Monday last was a very large one, testifying to the high esteem in which the deceased and her family were held.

    The Late William Young
In the last week's Gazette mention was made of the death of Mr Wm Young, of the 10th line of Ramsay, he having passed away on Thursday morning January 5th, at the advanced age of 87 years. The late Mr Young was born in 1827 at Brae Head, in the parish of Kilbride, Scotland. He was a son of the late Robt. Young, who came to Canada in 1832, and who afterward settled upon the farm latterly owned by Mr P.J. Young, on the 9th line. Here Mr Wm Young lived until 1857, when he was married to Miss Marion Nicholson, a daughter of the late Alex. Nicholson of Ramsay, and went to the farm, "Brae Head," upon which he spent the balance of his life. A family of nine children, seven sons and two daughters, were born to them, the only break in the family being the death of Dr. John Young, who died suddenly at Smiths Falls, on Jan. 17th, 1901. The others are Robert W., on the homestead, Alex N., in Ottawa; William M., in Detroit, Mich,; Rev Stephen, at Lanigan Sask.; Peter A., at Crystal City, Man.; Rev Henry at Seven Person, Alta.; George at home; Jessie (Mrs T.G. Wilson), Arnprior, and Annie (Mrs P.Y. Sutherland), in Ramsay. Mrs Young is also living, and is over eighty years, and is more bright and active than many people ten or fifteen years her junior. Of the late Mr Young brothers and sisters there are still living, Mr John Young, of Almonte; Rev Stephen Young, of Clifford; Mr P.J. Young, of Almonte; Mrs Foster, at Casselman, and Mrs Robt. Buckham of Ottawa, Mrs Toshack and Mrs G. Buckham are dead. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, and had it not been for the extremely inclement weather, it would have been one of the largest if not the very largest, ever seen in Ramsay township. As it was, the cortege was almost a mile long and was a splendid tribute to the memory of the deceased. The services at the home and at the cemetery were conducted by Rev S.G. Brown. The pallbearers were fellow-members of the session -- Messrs. A.M. Greig, R. Young (Ottawa), D. Stewart, Angus Sutherland, J.D. Robertson and Jas McLeod. Friends from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr Wm Young, of Detroit, Rev Stephen Young from Clifford, Ont., Messrs Alex N. Young and Robt. Young of Ottawa, Messrs John and Wm Young and Mrs Andrew Young, Mr and Mrs T.G. Wilson and Mr and Mrs W. Cavers from Arnprior, and Mr Geo Buckham from Torbolton. The late Mr Young was of a very quiet disposition, and was a man of few words. He was a man of strong convictions, and when he had taken a position regarding any question of right or wrong he was always found on what he believed to be the right side, and it required a strong argument to induce him to change his decision. While attending the services in the Free church at the eighth line he was ordained an elder of that congregation during the pastorate of the late Rev Wm McKenzie, and when the congregation removed to St John's church, about 1867, he was retained in that position, which he held until his death. After the death of Mr Watson several months ago, Mr and Mrs Young were the oldest couple living, of those who were among the earliest members of St John's church. Mr Young was for about twenty years superintendent of what was known as the Green Bush Sunday school, retaining the position until, in Rev Knowles' time, it was removed to Blakeney. A good neighbour, a kind friend, a ready sympathizer and willing helper in trouble, his passing has removed another of the fast-disappearing links which has bound the present with the past, and in the passing of whom there is distinct loss to the community.

William married Marion Nicholson in 1857. Marion (daughter of Alexander Nicholson and Janet "Jessie" McIntosh) was born in 1833 in Ontario, Canada; died on 11 Apr 1918 in Blakeney, Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. ?b?A Runner Dropped Dead?/b?
While going through the eighth line cemetery lately a GAZETTE scribe was struck by a verse on the tablet at the head of the grave of the late Robert Young, which reads as follows:
    "My sudden death proclaims aloud
    To you, my living friends,
To be prepared to meet your God
    When He the summons sends."
Inquiry as to the cause of the sudden death brought out the particulars, which are worth giving here. On New Year's Day, 1863, on the Mississippi river between Youngville and Rosebank, there was quite a gathering to witness the sorts, which consisted of trotting races on the ice, the trotters being hitched to buggies. In the afternoon a foot race was got up, the contestants being John Young (blacksmith, Almonte), John Toshack (son of the late James Toshack) and Robert Young (Brother of Messrs P.J. and Wm. Young, Ramsay). They were all young men ? two of them Young by name as well as young in years ? and, removing their boots, they ran in their sock-feet. Robert Young was ahead as he came to the winning line, and just before crossing the line he dropped on the ice ? dead! The late Dr. Mostyn, who happened to be in Rosebank at the time was quickly summoned, but the winner had passed beyond the reach of medical skill. The crowd got a great shock by the event, the sports were cancelled, and there was sadness in the community the balance of that New Year Day

    Another Sudden Call
It is seldom that we are called upon to chronicle so many sudden deaths and in some cases quite unexpected deaths as have fallen to our lot in the few weeks that have just past. And it now becomes our sad duty to make a short death-notice of still another, whose name has just been added to the long list of our lamented dead. Mr Stephen S. Young, of Youngville, Ramsay, son to the late Stephen Young, Esq., who died so suddenly last fall, was taken ill of scarlet fever on Friday last, and, notwithstanding that every effort which are and forethought could suggest was put forth for the preservation of his life, kept growing gradually worse till Wednesday evening, when death stopped in and put an end to his sufferings at about half-past eight o'clock. The deceased was a comparatively young man - only 27 yrs. of age - but, by his genial disposition and gentlemanly deportment, had drawn to his side many warm friends and admirers, by all of whom he will be greatly missed and his untimely demise deeply lamented. We desire to tender to the again bereaved mother and sorrowing brothers and sisters our warmest sympathy in this their most trying situation. The funeral takes place from his mother's residence today (Friday) at the hour of 10 o'clock.

    Obit. ? Robert Young
In the passing away of Mr Robert Young of "Otter Glen," Ramsay, the community has sustained a distinct loss. Mr Young had been in declining health from paralytic trouble for about a year, the last few months of which he was confined to the house and finally to bed, but though it all there was neither murmur nor complaining. The end came on Saturday not unexpectedly, but with the shock and sorrow which accompany such occurrences. The late Mr Young was a son of Mr Stephen Young and the second in a family of eleven ? Stephen, S., Robert, James, Andrew, Annie (Mrs Ford), Janet (Mrs McLean), Christena, Maggie, Mary, Lizzie and Kate ? all of whom have passed away except Misses Lizzie and Kate, who have their home at "Otter Glen." The deceased was married just seventeen years ago to Miss Annie McKay of Montreal, who is still living. He followed farming, except for a few years when he conducted a woolen mill which had been erected on a stream passing through the property. He was a member of the Blakeney Presbyterian church, and an elder for a number of years. He was possessed of a great love for music and one of the pleasures of his life was his work as leader of the church choir ? work to which he lent himself with that earnestness and zeal which characterized his discharge of every responsibility which rested upon him. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon to the eighth line cemetery, and was attended by a very large number of those who desired to show this tribute of respect to his memory, among them being several members of the A.O.U.W., which order the deceased was identified. The service was conducted by Rev Mr Macleod of Blakeney, who spoke in terms of warmest appreciation of the late Mr Young. The pallbearers were Messrs Jas McDougall, Alex D. Snedden, J. Merilees, R. Philip, J. Arthur, and W. Thoburn, M.P. The late Mr Young was a man of kindly geniality, of sterling worth and with a large heartedness such as does not characterize very many men.

    The Late Andrew Young
We regret to have to announce the death of Mr Andrew Young, youngest son of the late Stephen Young, of the ninth line of Ramsay, at the comparatively early age of 33. The late Mr Young was cut down in the midst of a life of success and usefulness. The earlier years of life of the deceased were passed on the family homestead. He afterwards attended for a year or two the Almonte high school, from which he matriculated into the Science and Engineering Department of McGill University. After a year or two of study in that institution Mr Young was graduated with the degree of B.Sc., and almost immediately obtained a good position as mining engineer and assayist in Montana. For the past three years he had been in failing health, and spent part of the year 1894 in Montana in search of health, but it was all in vain. Death had marked him for his own, and he passed away on Tuesday last. Mr Young was of a very quiet and unobtrusive disposition, but was popular with those who knew him and could not fail to value him for his many good qualities of head and heart. We join a large circle of friends and acquaintances in tendering our sincere sympathy to the relatives of the deceased, who have been sorely afflicted, this being the eighth death in the family within a period of less than twenty years, and the third within a period of four years. The funeral will take place today (Thursday) from the residence of Mr Robt Young to the 8th line cemetery.

ALEX. N. YOUNG PASSES AFTER SUDDEN STROKE
Had Just Concluded Week-end Visit With Relatives Here.
Member of Well-known Ramsay Family Was Schoolmaster For Number of Years Before Becoming
Librarian of Geological Survey at Ottawa.
Seized with a paralytic stroke on Monday afternoon just after he had left the home of his brother, Mr R.W. Young of Ramsay, to return to Ottawa after spending the week-end here. Mr Alexander N. Young passed away about three hours later. Mr Young, who was the widely known and esteemed librarian of the Geological Survey department of the Dominion government service, very often revisited his old home in Ramsay. Few public holidays failed to bring him back. Monday being a civic holiday in Ottawa he came on Saturday by motor to visit his brother Robert. He was accompanied by Mrs Young and his niece Miss Jean Young. It was somewhat of the nature of a family gathering for there were also present Rev and Mrs Stephen Young, of Saskatoon and others. The late Mr Young had been in a particularly happy mood and enjoyed very much the intercourse with his brother from Saskatchewan. They had planned to see more of one another before the latter returned to the west, and on Monday afternoon about two o'clock Mr Young started for the city accompanied by his wife and niece and Mrs Stephen Young. Mrs Stephen Young was to go as far as Carleton Place to visit relatives there, while the others were to go on to Ottawa.
    SUDDENLY STRICKEN
Miss J Young was seated with her uncle in the front seat and the car had barely left the residence when the automobile lurched to a stop. Miss Young immediately noticed that her uncle was not well and at once shut off the motor. While the others in the car attended to Mr Young she ran back to the house and summoned a physician. Mr Young was carried to the house, but from the first there was absolutely no hope of his recovery and he died at six o'clock. A soon as it was known that Mr Young was seriously ill a telephone call was sent to Ottawa for Donald Young, his only son, and when he had been reached, he left immediately in a motor car accompanied by Mr Ralph St. Germaine. His father had passed away but a few minutes when he arrived.
    WAS WIDELY KNOWN
The death of Mr Young came as a great shock to his friends. He was of a robust physique and always looked far younger than his years. He was held in very high regard and had a very large circle of friends. He took keen pleasure in meeting his friends and preserved his old associations. One of his chief delights was to visit his old home and to attend worship of a Sunday with his relatives at Bethany United Church, which he continued to call St Andrew's. He was an elder of the First United Church Ottawa. He was a scholarly man and a wide reader. He had a knowledge of works of geology probably unequalled in this country. He was fond of athletics and proud of the distinction which his son Donald has won as a member of the champion Rideau Basketball team and as the star outside wing of Ottawa's champion football team.
    OF RAMSAY STOCK
He was a son of the late William Young, of Ramsay, and his wife, Marion Nicholson, who and whose family have been prominent in the life of this community. He was born near Blakeney about sixty-five years ago. For a number of years he was a schoolmaster in this vicinity and established a high reputation. Over twenty years ago he was appointed librarian of the Geological Survey at the Victoria Memorial Museum, a position for which he was eminently fitted. The family home is at 370 Elgin street which is near the Museum. Some thirty-two years ago he was married to Miss Belle Campbell, of Almonte. He leaves to mourn his passing his widow and his son Donald. Another son, Grant was killed a numbered of years ago. He is survived also by two sisters and five brothers: Mrs P.Y. Sutherland, of Ramsay, Mrs Thomas Wilson, of Arnprior; Peter Young, of Vancouver; Rev Henry Young, of Bowden, Saskatoon, Sask.; William Young, of Detroit; and Robert W. Young, of Ramsay.
    THE FUNERAL
The funeral took place on Wednesday to the Auld Kirk cemetery where his remains were laid besides his son Grant. There was a remarkable concourse of mourners, the largest seen here for many years, and many Ottawa organizations were represented. Many representative citizens from Almonte and the surrounding district as well as Carleton Place, Arnprior, Pakenham, Bristol, etc., were in attendance. The service was impressively conducted by Rev J.R. MacCrimmon of Bethany United Church, Almonte, and Rev W. Whidden and Rev A.F. Pollock, both of the first United Church, Ottawa, (formerly Westminster Church), of which the deceased was a devoted member of long standing and was also a representative on the board of session.
    THE PALL BEARERS
The pallbearers were three brothers of the deceased: R.W. Young of the Township of Ramsay, William Young of Detroit; Rev Stephen Young of Rochester, N.Y.; a nephew, Dr. W.S. Young of Rochester, N.Y.; and two brother-in-law, Thomas Wilson of Arnprior and P.Y. Sutherland of Almonte. The honourary pallbearers were: W.H. Tate, William Fraser, J.M. Young, George Gourley, Leonard Thomas and A.R. Douglas all of whom were members of the session of the First United Church, Ottawa. Among others noted at the funeral were many friends of Donald Young, only son to the late Alex. N. Young, as follows T. Rooney, R. St Germaine, D. Dawson of the Rideau Baseball Club, Joe Miller, Capt. Joe Tubman and Dave McCann of the Ottawa Football Club; H. Shouldice and H. Starrs of the Metropolitan Baseball Club also Geo W. Bennett and John B. Arbrick of the Railway Commission, J.H. Lowry, Lyle Laishley, S. Hooper. T.L. Hamilton, Hon Andrew Haydon, R.L. McDonald, all of Ottawa.

Alexander married Isabella Campbell in 1897. Isabella was born on 23 Nov 1871 in Kenmore, Perth and Kinross, Scotland; died on 12 Jan 1958 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 14 Jan 1958 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. While still a young man he learned the plumbing trade in Almonte and later moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he carried on his trade until he retired some 10 years ago and moved back to Almonte where he lived until the time of his death. Killed In His Bedroom
    ????
Sudden death of Dr. John Young at Smiths's Falls, While Handling an Electric Lamp ? An Inquest ? Funeral on Tuesday, From the Home of His parents in Ramsay ? A Melancholy Affair.
    ????
The people of Almonte and Ramsay were shocked last Friday morning when a telephone message was received from Smith's Falls stating that the previous night John Young, L.D.S. D.D.S., of that town, fourth son of Mr William Young, of Ramsay, had been instantly killed by an electric shock while handling the electric lamp in his bedroom. It appears that prior to retiring for the night the deceased took a bath in the bathroom next to his bedroom, which is on the flat above his dental offices. The supposition is that after taking the bath and drying himself with a towel he was in the act of carrying the electric lamp (to which is attached a long cord to admit of its being carried about) from the bathroom into his bedroom, when he touched the stovepipes and probably had his feet on the ironwork that encased the pipes leading from the stove in the room below, through which the water pipes run to heat the water. At all events at this point the electric lamp seems to have become charged with more that its due share of electricity, as he undoubtedly got the shock that killed him on the spot. Experts explain that the high voltages was caused in some way by the electric current, which always seeks the shortest way to ground, following the stovepipes and the waterpipes to the ground. As soon as Dr Young put his feet on the ironwork he was instantly killed, in the opinion of electricians. In falling he fell against the stovepipes in the room, knocking them down. Nothing was known of the fatality till Friday morning, when Miss Bessie Clint, the Doctor's assistant, after waiting an hour longer than usual, and not hearing any noise, ascended the stairs and found the Doctor's body lying on the floor in his room. As soon as word reached Almonte Rev Mr Mitchell communicated by telephone with Dr. Y's brother Mr A.N. Young, of Rosebank, and drove down to the homestead to break the news to the family. This is the first death in the family of ten children, and is a heavy blow to the parents. Death at any age and under any circumstances is both sad and painful, but it is doubly so when, as in this case, the one cut off is in the vigour of manhood, with apparently a bright and useful future before him. The late John Young, after attending the Almonte high school for a number of years and obtaining a departmental certificate, taught school at White Lake, and afterwards in a section close to Smith's Falls for a few years. He then studied dentistry with Dr. McPhee, of Arnprior. On obtaining his degree he opened an office in Smith's Falls, where he soon, by his kindness of manner and his professional skill built up a splendid and increasing practice. Everything bade him hope for a successful and useful future, but the all-wise Father willed it otherwise. Dr Young was highly respected by all classes and conditions of men in Smith's Falls, and his untimely death has placed the whole of that town in gloom. He was an active worker in St. Paul's church, being secretary of the congregation and a Sabbath school teacher. A letter for his clergyman, Rev Mr Nixon, says that it will never be known on this side of eternity the amount of good done by the deceased, so pure was his life, so kind his disposition to all, and so generous was he in assisting those in need. Deceased was an Oddfellow and a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters, and the members of those societies showed every kindness and rendered all assistance possible to the relatives when they reached Smith's Falls Friday afternoon, in preparing the body to be brought home. An inquest was held Friday, and the verdict of the coroner's jury was that the deceased died from an electric shock, but that no blame attached to anyone. When the father and two sons arrived with the body at Almonte on Saturday evening, a large number of sympathizing friends met them at the station. The body was conveyed to the homestead of the 10th line Ramsay. He leaves behind him, besides his sorrowing parents, seven brothers and two sisters to mourn his untimely death. His sisters are Mrs Thos Wilson, of Fitzroy, and Mrs P. Sutherland, of Ramsay; and his brothers are Robert, the eldest, and George E., the youngest, on the homestead; Alexander N., teacher at Blakeney; William M., in Detroit; Peter, in Crystal City, Man.; Rev Stephen Young, at home at present; and Rev Henry Young, of Calgary, N.W.T. With the exception of Rev Stephen Young and Peter, of Crystal City, all the children were present at the obsequies. St Paul's S.S. and the Smith's Falls Oddfellows, Foresters, dentist and other sent handsome floral offerings.
    The Funeral
Took place on Tuesday at 1.30 p.m. from the homestead to the eighth line cemetery, and was one of the largest ever seen in this section, testifying to the universal esteem entertained for the deceased and to the deep sympathy felt for the bereaved family. The relgious services were conducted by Rev Mr Mitchell and Rev T. Nixon of St Paul's church, Smith's Falls, of which the late Dr. Young was a member. Mr Thos Clint, a member of the session of St Paul's, was also present. The C.O.F. and I.O.O.F lodges of Smith's Falls and Almonte attended in a body. The Foresters of Court Victoria, Smith's Falls, were represented by the following brethren: Jas Garvin, C.R., F.W. Hall, secretary, Thos Devlin and G.H. Frost, Court Hope, C.O.F. ?J. Lyle, Wm Miller and Robt Storey; Rideau Lodge, I.O.O.F. ? Dr Weagant, Dr Burns, Dr Loucks (the three Smith's Falls member of the dental profession), J.A. Reid, D.D.G.M. M.W. Evertts, John A. Johnston, W.J. Steele, F. Atkinson. There was a good turnout of the Almonte Oddfellows. The grave, after a brief service by Rev Mr Mitchell, the burial service of the I.O.O.F. was read by Bro. J.A. Reid, of Rideau Lodge No. 241, acting as Noble Grand, and by Bro. P.C. McGregor, Chaplin of Alpha Lodge, Almonte. Bro. Jas Garvin, of Court Victoria, C.O.F., Smith's Falls then read a portion of the service of the Foresters, after which all the was mortal of the late Dr. Young was committed to the tomb.

    Died:
Sports Figure. He invented the game of Basketball in 1891. Born in rural Ontario, Canada, both his parents died while he was still in grade school and his grandparents and then an uncle were left to care and raise him. Becoming an ordained minister and a medical doctor, he took a job teaching physical education at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. There he created the game of basketball, intending to introduce a game that allowed exercise indoors, by using two peach basket hoops, a soccer ball and 13 simple rules. He later came to the University of Kansas at Lawrence in 1898 , filling the dual post of Athletics director and chapel director. He initiated the first collegiate Jayhawks basketball game at the University. Throughout his lifetime he never received any fame or fortune from the sport he created, and only after his passing in 1939 was enormous recognition heaped upon him.
