LAST TRIBUTE PAID TO LANARK TWP. FARMER
One of the best known farmers of an older generation died at the home of his son, Frank, in Ramsay Township, Sunday, March 9th, in the person of William Edward James. He was in his 81st year and had been in ill health for some time. The late Mr. James was born on the 12th concession of Lanark Township on a farm where he lived until some four years ago when he moved to his son's home, a few miles away, where he spent his remaining years. He was a son of the late William H. James and his wife Eleanor Ennis, pioneer residents of what is known as the "James Settlement."
    Large Connection
He is survived by his widow, the former Annie Warren, and five children, namely. Gordon and Frank of Ramsay; Warren of Arnprior, and John on the homestead, Lanark Township, and one daughter, Eleanor (Mrs. Ray Bartlett) of Toronto. There are also two brothers and two sisters; Frank of Carleton Place; Harold of Vancouver; Eleanor (Mrs. James Warren) of Balderson, and Sarah of Carleton Place. There are five grandchildren. Deceased sisters were: Emma (Mrs. R. A. Montgomery); Bertha (Mrs. W. T. Hands); Mary (Mrs. W. J. Rothwell) and Gladys. The late Mr. James was a member of St. George's Anglican Church, Clayton, and took an active part in the construction of the building 50 years ago. He was a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge being affiliated with 1367 Clayton. In politics he was an unwavering Conservative. There were many floral tributes from relatives and friends and a piece from Ihe Supertest Oil Co.
    Funeral On Tuesday
The funeral, which was largely attended, took place from the James homestead in Lanark Twp. on Tuesday to St. George's Church, Clayton. and interment was in the Church cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. W. L. James, Herb. James, John F. James. Ben James. Alfred James, all cousins, and a brother-in-law, Thos. Warren. Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. Harold James, Vancouver; Dr. J. C. Rothwell, Montreal; Mr. and Mrs. Warren Rothwell, Ottawa; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Warren, Cornwall: Miss Gertrude Bredin, Woodland; Mrs. Margaret McCleverty, Wales; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kidd, Burritt's Rapids. Mr. James was a farmer of the old school He was quite successful and in his hours of relaxation he enjoyed company. He was well known all over the district, although in later years he did not get around very much because he was plagued with asthma. But he was always the same and with his friends carried on a cheerful conversation giving no hint that at times he did not feel the best. He was the kind of man those who knew him enjoyed meeting.

    Thomas Ashmore Kidd

Thomas Ashmore Kidd (May 1, 1889 ? December 19, 1973) was speaker of the Legislature of Ontario in 1930-1934 and served as Conservative MLA for Kingston from 1926 to 1940 and Progressive Conservative MP for Kingston City from 1945 to 1949.

He was born in Burritt's Rapids, Ontario, the son of Edward Kidd, and was educated there and in Kemptville. Kidd was a manufacturer and wholesale merchant. He served in France with the Royal Regiment of Canada in 1915 and was wounded at Ypres. In 1920, he married Eva Richardson, the daughter of the late senator Henry Westman Richardson. Kidd was a member of Kingston city council from 1922 to 1926 and also served on the Kingston Board of Works. He won the Conservative nomination in Kingston after the incumbent Conservative, William Folger Nickle, resigned from the cabinet of Howard Ferguson in order to protest the government's decision to run for re-election on the platform of repealing the Ontario Temperance Act and allowing government controlled liquor sales. Kidd defeated Nickle who ran as a Prohibitionist candidate in the 1926 provincial election.

Kidd was re-elected in the 1929 provincial election and served as Speaker of the Ontario Legislative Assembly from 1930 until 1934.

He resigned from the provincial legislature to run unsuccessfully for the Canadian House of Commons in the 1940 federal election but won on his second attempt in 1945. Kidd was defeated in bid for re-election in 1949 and again when he tried to return to politics in 1957. Kidd was also a Grand Master in the Orange Lodge.
