Mrs Stewart L. Nontell
The death occurred in Ottawa on Tuesday Sept 6th at the home of her daughter, Mrs Kirby Chamberlain, of Elizabeth Gemmill, widow of Stewart L. Nontell in her 98th year. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon and interment will be made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs Chamberlain and a son Percy of Ottawa. Another son, Roy of Almonte, died some years ago. The family lived originally on the 10th line of Ramsay near the half-way crossing. Mr George Gemmill of Almonte is a nephew of the late Mrs Nontell.

Elizabeth married Stewart Nontell in 1881. The daughter of James Gemmill (c.1842-1895) and Isabella Lawford (1844-1918), Margaret was born and raised in the Town of Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario.

On her father's side her Gemmill and Bridget ancestors came from Paisley, Scotland in 1821 as part of the Lanark Society Settlers. While on her mother's side, her GM Margaret Cameron's family came from Govan, Scotland also in 1821 and her GF Thomas Lawford was a discharged British soldier who fought at the Battle of Waterloo.

As a young woman, Maggie worked at one of the mills on the Mississippi River as a "factory hand" (1881 Census). In 1884, she married Walter H. Manning and moved with him to Clinton in Huron County. They made their lifelong home there and raised their family of two sons, James and Lewis, and their daughter Margaret or as she preferred to be called, Marjorie. Their youngest child, Herbert Gemmill Manning, died very young.

Maggie died at Toronto in Aug. 1941, aged 78.

A bright and popular young lady Miss Maggie Gemmill, daughter of Mrs John Gemmill, Brougham street, passed away last Thursday night after a prolonged illness from consumption, within a month of her twenty-first birthday. She was a member of the Methodist church, and was much thought of by all who knew her. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon to the eighth line cemetery, and was a very large one.

Mr Geo M. Gemmill
Mr Geo M. Gemmill passed away in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, May 17, at the age of 62 years. Mr Gemmill had been ill for the past three months, two months of which time he spent in Ottawa Civic Hospital. He was taken suddenly worse about 7 p.m. on Wednesday and passed away about 11 p.m. The funeral will be held on Monday, May 22, at 2.30 p.m., from the Comba Funeral Home to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Service will be held at 2 p.m.

Last Tribute Is Paid George M. Gemmill
The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home on Monday afternoon of one of Almonte's well-known citizens, George M. Gemmill who died in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital on Wednesday evening. He was 62 years of age and while he had been in rather poor health for some time the end came suddenly. Mr Gemmill was a son of the late Mr and Mrs John Gemmill and after serving his apprenticeship in the dry goods store of the late A.J. McAdam, for some years he operated a ladies' wear and dry goods store later selling out to his partner, Mr W. Taber of Carleton Place. Of late years he was on the staff of N.S. Lee & Son, hardware merchants. The late Mr Gemmill was an enthusiastic bowler and curler and at the time of his death was President of the Almonte Lawn Bowling Club. His wife, the former Robena Mae Willoughby predeceased him many years ago. Left to mourn his passing is a son, Arthur, of Ottawa and a brother, Robert of Fort William, both of whom were present for the funeral. Attending also from Ottawa were Mr George Willoughby, Miss Myrtle and Mrs and Mrs Graydon Willoughby and children. Funeral services were conducted at the Comba Funeral Home and the grave by Rev H.L. Morrison of Trinity United Church assisted by Rev H.C. Wolfraim of Bethany United Church. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs J.E. Lindsay, F.A.C. Darling, J.D. McCallum, J.H. Martin, N.S. Lee and Derward Washburn. Mr Gemmill was a man of quiet disposition who attended to his own affairs and never was known to say unkind things about other people. Many floral offerings testified to the esteem in which he was held.

Sudden Death Of Roy D. Nontell
Former Councillor Passes Away SuddenlyAt His Home This Morning
The death occurred suddenly this Tuesday morning at his home of Ottawa street, of Mr Roy Donald Nontell, aged 59 years. He complained, yesterday, of a pain in his chest but went to work with his wood sawing outfit this morning. Not felling any better he returned home and died of a heart seizure about 10.30. The late Mr Nontell was a son of the late Stewart Nontell and his wife Elizabeth Gemmill. He was born on the 10th concession of Ramsay but did not continue to live on the farm. For upwards of twenty years he was n charge of the big stationary engine in the saw mill at Nicholson's Siding. About two months ago he returned to Almonte after spending the spring and summer in charge of an engine in a mill at Beauchene, Que. Mr Nontell was a most efficient mechanic, having first class papers in steam and a long experience in the handling of sawmill machinery. From time to time he was a member of the Town Council and while his service at that Board was intermittent because of the nature of his vocation he must have served quite a few years. He was elected to the Council for the last time in 1940 but only served a few months in 1941 as he left for Beauchene early in the year. His seat was finally declared vacant after he failed to attend three regular meeting. Mr Nontell is survived by his aged mother of Ottawa and his wife who was Sadie Ritchie previous to her marriage. He also leaves a daughter, Aileen and a brother and sister in Ottawa, namely Percy and Mina, Mrs Kirby Chamberlain. Mr Isaac Nontell of Almonte, is a uncle. Harry of this town and Stewart, now overseas with the Canadian army are cousins. He was a member of the Orange Order and of the I.O.O.F. The funeral will be held on Christmas Day at 2.30 pm. from the home of Mr George L. Comba, Church Street, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery vault. Service half an hour earlier. The death of Mr Nontell came as a shock to his friends because he had always enjoyed robust health and did not complain of feeling badly until a day before his death
