A Ramsay Pioneer, and Prominent and Successful Farmer Called to His Reward - Sketch of His Life

It is with sincere regret that we chronicle the death of one of Ramsay township's most respected farmers, in the person of Mr John Steele, who passed away on Saturday last, after being confined to bed for a month with inflamation of the stomach. Few men in this neighbourhood were better known or more highly esteemed, and the announcement of his death carried sorrow to many hearts. All his life he enjoyed the best of health, being possessed of a rugged constitution. Up to last Christmas he had never been troubled with any illness worth mentioning; then he was laid aside for a time, but recovered, and was able to go about as usual until a few weeks ago, when he was attacked by the trouble that terminated fatally. the late Mr Steele was identified with the progress of the township in which he lived for upward of sixty years.

He had his share in the work of transforming the primitive forest into a section that is now covered with fine farms and comfortable homes; and in later years his enterprise as a farmer manifested itself in the line of introducing and encouraging the breeding of thoroughbred stock in the country. He was an officer of the first agricultural society orginized in this district, and for nearly fifty years he held office in it and took a keen interest in its welfare.

In 1886 he was elected president of the North Lanark Agricultural Society, and later on, when increasing years prevented his taking as active a part as he had done, he was elected an honourary director for life. Mr Steele was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland, on the 25th January 1812, so that he had reached the patriarchal of 82 years. He came to Canada with his parents (who were among the earliest settlers of this part) in 1821. They came first to Lanark Village, then came down the Clyde and Mississippi rivers in boats, their landing place and first camping place being on the site now occupied by the Almonte town hall property. His parents first took up"Riverside Farm" now owned by Messrs M. and J. McFarlane, some years later they lived on the one at present owned by Mr. A. A. Steele and a half century ago the deceased purchased the homestead, on which he resided continuously till he died. At Pakenham in 1850 the late Rev Dr Mann unitedhim in marriage with Mary Johnston, who survives, with six children, to mourn his loss. the chilren are Alexander and Robert in Montana, and John, William, Margaret and Jessie, on the homestead. In politics deceased was a Liberal and in religion a Presbyterian. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, and was one of the largest ever seen in the township, the cortege being about a mile long. the sorrowing widow and family have the sympathy of a host of friends.

    DEATH'S HARVEST
    Mr Alexander Steele
For several weeks Mr Alexander Steele had been in a physical condition which gave little hope of even a brief rallying, and he gradually became weaker until this Thursday morning when he slept quietly away. About two years and a half ago he suffered from a paralytic stroke, and again about a year later a second attack not only robbed him what he had regained in strength, but further deprived him of the wonderful vitality he had enjoyed throughout his years. He was born on the McFarlane farm now owned by Mr A.S. Duncan, and when he was but a few years of age, his father, the late Alexander Steele moved to the farm on the seventh line upon which the deceased lived until about twenty-three years ago, when he moved to Almonte, where he has since resided. He was born Sept. 10th, 1828, and was a twin, his mate dying nearly fifty years ago, from injured resulting from a kirk from a horse. On Nov 30th, 1858, he was married to Agnes Whyte, and eleven children were born to them. Two of these died in infancy, and another James R., who was captain in the U.S. Signal Service Corps in Cuba during the Spanish-American war, died there in 1898. Those living are Mrs Jas. Black (Isabella), who has been with her parent here; Mrs Jas. A. Dack (Kate) in Carleton Place; Mrs Neil Campbell (Minnie) in Arnprior; Alex A., in Mostyn, Sask.; John W, in Chicago; Dr. M.H., in Carleton Place; Dr W.H., in Arnprior, and Dr. Lorne D. in Regina. The late Mr. Steele was a man of quiet disposition and though he took keen interest in matters of public affair, he took little active part therein, though for a number of years he was a valued member of the school trustee board. He was of Scotch descent, and was a Presbyterian in religion and an ardent Liberal in politics. The funeral has been delayed until Sunday afternoon in order that Dr. Lorne, who is coming from Regina, and Mr John W., from Chicago, may reach here in time. The funeral will be at 3 o'clock, the service at the house taking place at half-past two.

His Father Stayed in a Tent in Almonte Where the Town Hall Now Stands
Mr John Steele, a prominent figure in Ramsay Township for half a century, died on Friday, after a long illness. Three years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered. He was 74 years of age. He was a son of the late John Steele and his wife, Mary Johnston. John Steele the elder was a boy six years old when he came with his parents from Lanarkshire, Scotland. On their arrival in Ramsay the family erected their tent on the site of the present Almonte Town Hall. The late John Steele was married in 1891, to Miss Amy Coulter, of Almonte, and to them were born seven children. Arthur, of Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia; Lou of Woodsfield, Ohio; James, on the homestead; Beth, Mrs Hal Kirkland of Montreal, and Ernest, of Grandmere, Que., survive along with Mrs Steele. Mary and Alexander are deceased. Mr Steele was one of the most progressive of the Ramsay farmers. He saw early the advantages of tile draining and was the first to adopt this method. He was a strong advocate of the taking over of the Rosebank power and developing it for the use of the district. For a time he was secretary-treasurer of the Bennies Corners School. and for a number of years he was a director of the North Lanark Agricultural Society. The funeral service on Monday was conducted by Mr A.M. Wootten, of Blakeney United Church, and the pallbearers were Messrs Alex Cochran, Albert Naismith, Robert Barker, John Fulton, Wm Phillips and John Snedden. The remains were interred in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The were many floral tributes and to the long cortege were many friends, from Ottawa, Pembroke, Arnprior and Carleton Place. ?b?John Arthur Steele Passes?/b?
After funeral services in Ottawa, John Arthur Steele (Art) was interred at the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte, September 4th. Mr Steele was born in 1894 on the Steele Century Farm, 8th line, Ramsay Township, the son of John Steele and Amy Coulter, and grandson of a Scot who came to Ramsay in the 1820's. Mr Steele always had great affection for Almonte and its people. Mr Steele leaves his wife, Laura McGregor, formerly of Pakenham; five daughters, Aileen, Amy (Mrs Robert Kempster) and Patricia, all of Ottawa; Joan (Mrs Humfry Peake), of England; Dr Marion Steele of Guelph; a son, Dr John Steele of Ottawa; two sisters, Louise of Cobourg and Beth (Mrs Hal Kirkland) of Almonte; a brother, Ernest of Toronto. He was predeceased by a sister, May and brothers Alex and James. After graduating from Almonte High School he entered the Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph. He, together with his comrade, the late Hal Kirkland, enlisted in the First University Corps which in July 1915 reinforced the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. After the war, he again attended the O.A.C.; later at Iowa State College he received his M.Sc. In 1920 Mr Steele joined the staff of the Soldier Settlement Board, working in British Columbia and Alberta. Later he served as a dairy promoter in Ontario and organized cow testing associations in Quebec. In 1925 he joined the livestock branch of the Canadian Department of Agriculture as a livestock fieldman for Nova Scotia. He is fondly remembered by many farmers and former Calf Club members there, where he introduced such then-new procedures as artificial insemination. In 1946 he returned to the Ottawa Valley on his appointment as assistant chief registration officer. In 1960 when he retired he was head of the Record of Performance, cattle section, of the livestock division. After his retirement he contributed articles to the Family Herald and other farm journals commenting on such subjects as the valuation system for farm price of milk. Mr Steele was a member of the Mason, the Canadian Legion, the Agricultural Institute of Canada and the O.A.C. Alumni. From the O.A.C. year book of 1920, the following quotation reveals aspects of Art which endeared him to so many: "In the spring of 1915 he took a trip to the Old Country with the P.P.C.L.I. serving with them until demobilized in 1919. While in France his thoughts wandered back to the old orchard on the farm upon seeing a pear tree some short distance from the trenches, and his fondness for pears was responsible for him being the object of an enemy sniper. However, Art got the pears and cheated the sniper of the coveted notch in he but of his rifle. Later, however, he selected an enemy bullet more to his liking and took a trip to the hospital areas. While convalescing, Paris claimed his attention and by the time he returned to his unit he could say, "Oui, la la." At the college many humourous sayings have originated in Art's cortex. He hold the record for breaking chemical apparatus, his bank account and monotony. To art all life's troubles are soluble in a grin and we expect to find him growing two turnips where one grew before, when he returns to agricultural life."

John married Laura Isabelle McGregor in 1927. Laura (daughter of Alexander S. McGregor and Martha Martin) was born on 21 Jan 1898 in Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 16 Jul 1982 in Ottawa, Ottawa Municipality, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
