    Went Down in Hunland
The following extract is from a letter received by Dr Kirkland from Capt W.R. Greene, 57th Squadron, Royal Air Force, regarding what happened to his son, James Kirkland: "About Kirkland and Riley, what happened was this: They were on a bomb raid which I was leading. The weather was very bad, and we had been followed around by Pfaiz scouts. Just as we got to the objective and had dropped our bombs a thunder storm burst right on top of us. The rain which followed absolutely blinded every one of us, with the result that the formation got split up. I eventually collected a few of them, and having seen them across the lines, I waited for about ten or fifteen minutes; but seeing nothing I came home to find that Kirkland had not arrived. Later on we got a report through from the line that he had been seen going down over Hunland with the Huns following. Probably his engine was hit, or something like that. We are extremely sorry as he was such a topping fellow and awfully stout, and Riley no less so." Riley, referred to above, was Jimmy Kirkland's observer, and "Pfaiz Scouts" are one type of German war planes.

2014, Saturday June 14, The Toronto Star
KIRKLAND, John "Jack" Steele, QC - On Saturday, June 7, 2014 in his 78th year, surrounded by his family, Jack left the world as he had lived his life: with courage and dignity. Predeceased by his parents, Hal and Beth (Steele); his infant son, John; and his precious son, Joseph (2006). He will be forever missed by his loving and cherished wife, Beverley; his adoring children, Jimmy (Crystal Lemay), Mary, Catherine (Christopher Newton) and Jacqueline (Gene Bruce); his beautiful grandchildren, Alexa, Leah, Olivia, Madeline, Adam, Jackson, Clara, Clayton, Celeste and Atley; his devoted brother, James T. Kirkland of Toronto; his daughters-in-law, Louise Kirkland and Lisa Giffin; special family friend, Freddy Laphen; and his many wonderful friends and colleagues. Jack practiced law in Smiths Falls for 54 years. He went to work until his body could no longer take him there three weeks ago. He was the consummate small town lawyer - he did a little bit of everything, but he flourished in criminal law because he loved the drama of the courtroom. The law was his calling as he was a keen observer of the human condition and fierce defender of the underdog. He will be sorely missed by the many people whose lives he touched. Honouring Jack's request, there will be a private family celebration of his life and no visitation or funeral.

Jack married Beverley K. Fraser in 1962. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
