But few of the hardy pioneers remain who cleared the forest and paved the way for the fine farms and comfortable homes that now dot the surface of Lanark County, and the number has been lessened by the death last Sunday, at his home in Upper Pakenham, of Mr Alexander Lindsay, who had attained the patriarchal age of 91 years. He was a strong man all his life, and had the use of all his faculties to the last. Aday or two previous to his death he was able to split wood and do some other work around the house. Saturday morning he took ill, but rallied until early the following morning, when another attack proved fatal. the late Mr Lindsay was born in Scotland in 1804; came to Canada with the early settlers in 1821 - seventy-four years ago; married in 1830 (Mrs Lindsay died January 30, 1892 aged 85); and for over sixty years resided continuously on the farm on which he died, enjoying the esteem of his friends and neighbours. His children are Mrs Alex Duncan of Wyoming, Ont, William, in Australia, James D., of Kars, Carleton County; Misses Mary and Lizzie, of Fargo, Dakota; Mrs James Marshall, of Oil Springws, Ont; Miss Susan and Mr Alexander Lindsay, on the homestead. Most of the above were home to the funeral which took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery. A very large number turned out to pay the final mark of respect to one who had his part in struggles incident to pioneering life in this section, and who for almost three-quarters-of-a-century was identified with the interest of the neighbouthood in which he lived. Rev J.M. McLean conducted thew religious exercises.

    ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE
The few now remaining of the pioneer settlers of this section are rapidly passing away, leaving behind but memories of their many noble qualities. This week we have to record the demise of another -- a man rich in the good opinion of his fellows -- Mr Wm Lindsay of White Lake. The sad event took place on Sunday last, and although not unexpected, the news was received with a great deal of regret by those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He was 74 years of age, 63 of which were spent in the neighbourhood. Deceased came with his father from Cambusnethan, Scotland, in the year 1821, and they settled in Ramsay the same year. When he grew into manhood he became a school teacher, and taught in the townships of Ramsay and Beckwith for about fifteen years. Some twenty years ago he went to White Lake, where he built a sawmill, and established a profitable lumber trade. He was a keen politician -- always a consistent Liberal -- and many a time has traveled to this neighbourhood, some 26 miles, to record his vote. His funeral took place on Tuesday, and the large number whose followed his mortal remains to their resting place showed the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and neighbours.

    A Respected Old Settler's Death
One by one the old settlers of this neighbourhood are passing away, and we are being reminded of the truth of the saying that, "the young may die, but the old must." Mr Gavin Lindsay, one of the oldest and most respected residents of this section, joined the silent majority last Monday at noon, in the 80th year of his age. He had been ill for a time ? a wearing out of the system. Deceased was a son of the late William Lindsay of Ramsay, and was born in the town of Wisha, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Nov 15, 1818. He came to Canada in 1820 with his parents, who were among the very first settlers in Ramsay. Some idea of the hardships endured by these old settlers in the "primeval forest," as far as regards travelling may be gathered from the fact the effects of the Lindsay family when they went to occupy their newly drawn land were conveyed thither on a raft from the foot of the fall at Almonte down the Mississippi to the farm Mr. Lindsay had selected, which is now owned by Mr. William Simpson. The hard work incident to early life in the bush must have been more than balanced by the simple life of the people, for most of them lived to a good old age. Gavin was the youngest of a family of seven, and the only surviving one is Mrs Pollock, of North Gower, aged 86. Two had reached the patriarchal age of over 90 at death, and all exceeded the allotted span. The deceased remained single until about eight years ago, when he married Elizabeth Cumming, widow of the late Edward Cumming, of Almonte. The late Mr. Lindsay in his early years was a farmer, having, like most youngest sons of the old settlers, succeeded to the homestead, on which he remained until twelve of fifteen years ago, when he retired from the active duties of farm life and moved into Almonte. For several years, in company with his brothers William and Alexander, he successfully ran the sawmill at White Lake Mr Lindsay, like all old Scotch settlers who settled in this county in the early twenties, was a great reader and a very intelligent man. He was exceedingly quiet and unostentatious, but was of the sterling kind of which the best citizens are made. He was a strong adherent of the Presbyterian church and a member of St. Andrew's congregation, Almonte. In politics he was a pronounced Liberal, and like most of the old Reformers of this county, was always able to give a reason for his political faith. His funeral, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, was largely attended, Rev R.J. Hutchson, M.A., pastor of St. Andrew's officiated. Mrs Lindsay and the other relatives have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.

Gavin married Elizabeth Beaton on 2 Jul 1890 in Lanark Village, Lanark Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Elizabeth (daughter of John Beaton and Janet Paton) was born in 1852 in Darling Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 16 Nov 1941 in Poland, Dalhousie Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 18 Nov 1941 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
