    Obit. Mrs Peter Young
One by one the old settlers of Ramsay have been passing away to their long rest, until very few of those who settled her in the early years of this century are left. One of the earliest, Mrs Peter Young, of the 7th line Ramsay, passed away last Monday morning. She was the relict of the late Peter Young, who died in 1886. Both Mr and Mrs Young died in their 82nd year. Mrs Young's maiden name was Jean Erskine. She was born in Glasgow on Jan 14, 1810, and was married to Mr Young in that city. In 1832 the came to Ramsay, and resided in that township continuously to the time of their death. Mr and Mrs Young had seven sons and four daughter, all of whom are living and settled in comfortable homes of their own. The sons are William, Peter, John, Robert and Andrew, living in Almonte; Alexander, in Toronto; and Stephen, on the homestead. The daughters are Mrs John McCarter, Mrs Angus Sutherland, Mrs Henry Cavers and Mrs John McFarlane. Mrs Young enjoyed good health until she fell a few years ago and injured herself. She was able to move about the house until about two weeks ago. Her death was caused by a general break-up of the system through old age. Mrs Young was of a very gentle and kind disposition, and was greatly beloved by all who knew her. Both she and her husband were well-known and respected on account of their genial nature, and many a pleasant evening was spent under their hospitable roof that will long be remembered by their friends and neighbours. The large cortege that followed her remains to the 8th line cemetery on Wednesday showed the high esteem in which the deceased and her family are held in the community. Rev R. Knowles, of Pembroke, was the officiating clergyman, and six sons of the deceased were the pallbearers.

    Obit. ? Mr Wm Young
On Monday of last week a simple operation for the removal of a small growth, but this was followed by other complications which reduced his strength so that on Friday alarm was caused by his condition, and though efforts were made to stimulate his vitality he never rallied and passed away on Friday afternoon. The deceased was the eldest son of the late Peter Young, of Ramsay and was born in Glasgow, coming to Canada with his parents in 1832 when about a year and a half of age. They settled on the farm afterwards owned by Mr I. Nontell on the tenth line, known as the Shepherd farm and a year of two later moved to the farm on the seventh line which became the homestead. In 1861 Mr Wm Young was married to Maggie Sutherland, who died the following year, leaving an infant daughter who is now Mrs Wm Cavers, living near Arnprior. A few years later he was married to Agnes Nicholson, who died in 1868, of her children, Peter E., of Sault Ste Marie, being the only one alive, another having died when young. During these years Mr Young had lived on a farm on the sixth line of Pakenham township, but he sold this and removed to Almonte about 1870, where he joined his brother, Alex. E., in the erection of the sawmill which was afterward operated by the Foleys and later by the Caldwells. In 1875 he entered partnership with his brothers, Robt. and Andrew, in the foundry and machine business started in the old tannery building on Water street, and in 1866 he withdrew and since then lived a retired life. In 1874 he married Mary Clint, who survives him, and to them one daughter, Mrs A. M. Sutherland, of Langton, was born. Mr Young's death is the first break in a family of eleven brothers and sisters. Those left are Mrs John McCarter, town; Alex. E., of Toronto; Mrs A. Sutherland and Mrs H. Cavers, Ramsay; Peter, John, Steen, Robt. and Andrew and Mrs John McFarlane, Almonte. The late Mr Young was a man of quiet disposition and was never in the public eye, but he filled his place in life, consistently and cheerfully He was a member of St Andrew's church and was a staunch Liberal.

    Obit. ? Mrs John McCarter
Mrs John McCarter has suffered for several weeks from an internal trouble, and while there was no hope of her ultimate recovery, friends were buoyed up with the hope that she might rally from her present illness and again be around amongst them. But such was not to be, and early this (Thursday) morning her spirit took its flight to the world beyond. Mrs McCarter was a great sufferer through her illness, but bore it with the same uncomplaining patience and resignation which had characterized her whole life. She was truly a mother in Israel, quiet in disposition and so kind of heart that many a home in Almonte has been brightened by her presence and her help and many will miss her kindly ministrations in coming times of need. Mrs McCarter, whose maiden name was Agnes R. Young, was a daughter of the late Peter Young, of Ramsay, and was the second eldest of the family, having lived to enter her seventy-fourth year. About fifty years ago she was married to Mr McCarter and to them were born six sons and five daughters, all of whom, with the exception of one, who died in infancy, are still living. These are: Peter and Alex in Dawson, Yukon; William, in Victoria, B.C.; James, at Verona; John, in Toronto; Robert in Montreal; Mrs J.M. Masson, Concord; Mrs Eastwood, Peterboro; Mrs Flanagan, and Miss Agnes, Almonte. All of these except Messrs Peter, William and Alex have been home during their mother's illness. The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock, service at the house half-an-hour earlier.

Agnes married John McCarter in 1855. John was born on 10 Apr 1823 in Brechin, Angus, Scotland; died on 25 Sep 1899 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 27 Sep 1899 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. DEATH'S TOLL
    Alexander E. Young
Another to whom the call has come within the week is Mr Alex E. Young, who passed away on Monday, April 22nd, at his home in Toronto, in his 78th year. He had not been in good health for some time, having suffered from rheumatism and other infirmities which brought about his demise. he was born in Ramsay in 1834, son of the late Peter Young. He served his apprenticeship with the Cossitts in the woodworking department of their agricultural implement works at Smiths Falls. Later he had a door and sash factory in Carleton Place, and then came to Almonte, where he formed a partnership with Mr John Flett and established a foundry and machine shop where the Almonte Knitting Co's mill now stands. In 1870 he sold out his interests in the business, and during the next year he visited Scotland and spent some time with friends there. In 1871 he built the sawmill up at the island, which he ran for a short time and then sold to the Foley Bros. He was a member of the town council for several years and was one of the twelve men and true who were in office during the building of the town hall, Mr B. Rosamond being mayor. Of late years Mr and Mrs Young have had their home in Toronto, and from that centre went on pleasant jaunts to various points and so have seen quite a bit of the world. Some time was spent in California, a couple of winters in Cuba, and a leisurely trip through the Canadian west to the coast was taken. Almost fifty years ago ? to be accurate, in August ? Mr Young was married to Miss Christina Toshack, who survives him. There was no family. In the family of which Mr Young was a member there were four girls and seven boys. Of these Mrs Angus Sutherland, sr., and Mrs J. McFarlane, and Messrs Peter, John, Stephen, Robt and Andrew are living, and Mrs J. McCarter, Mrs H. Cavers and William are dead. The deceased was Presbyterian, and at the time of his death he was an elder in Cooke's church in Toronto. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, and was attended by many friends. The pallbearers were Messrs J. Young, Claybank; W. Thoburn, M.P., A.M. Grieg, Jas Snedden, Adam Scott, and James Forgie. Interment was made in the eighth line cemetery.

Alexander married Christina Toshack in 1862. Christina (daughter of Andrew Toshack and Christina Anderson) was born in 1839 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 26 May 1921 in Toronto, York County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in 1921 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. John Young Is Killed At Main Street Crossing Prominent Almonte Citizen Meets Death While Driving Buggy over Railway
Jury Returns Verdict of Accidental Death but Recommends that Improvements be Effected in order that View of Railway be Less Obstructed.
Mr. John Young, a well-known citizen of Almonte, was killed at the main street crossing of the C.P.R. on Saturday evening about 7 o'clock. He was driving across the railway in a buggy when a freight train travelling west struck him. From the evidence at the inquest held in the council chamber on Wednesday evening with Dr. A.A. Metcalfe, the coroner presiding it appeared that two freight trains had passed through Almonte within fifteen or twenty minutes on Saturday evening. Possibly Mr. Young, had judged that after the first had gone through the rails would clear for a considerable time. At any rate the second train was almost upon him when he observed it. It was about 75 feet away. He was affected with deafness, so that he did not hear the whistle of the locomotive the ringing of the locomotive bell and the ringing of the crossing bell, all the evidence showed that the usual precautions were observed, and that the train was not travelling at an excessive speed. W. Kenny, of Smiths Falls, the engineer of the train stated that there was no particular order for passing through the town of Almonte. They could go up to 30 miles. He states in reply to Dr. Metcalfe that slow up orders had been received since the accident. Both he and Leslie Ritchie, the fireman, saw Mr. Young endeavouring to cross the rack after he saw the oncoming train. When Mr. Young observed it he urged his horse forward but apparently it became frightened and balked. Mr. Ritchie thought he could have stopped instead of trying to cross. However, he made the effort to get his horse and buggy across the rails and failed. The train caught them, the horse was cut in two, and carried some distance. Mr. Young was thrown out and injured beyond hope of recovery. His skull was fractured, his jaw and both legs broken, and there were internal injuries as well. He was taken at once to the R.M. Hospital but died immediately upon his arrival there, some fifteen minutes after the accident. He never regained consciousness. It seems that the only persons in Almonte who witnessed the accident were Mr. Robert Ford and two children. Mr. Ford gave evidence at the inquest. He said he anticipated the accident. He saw Mr. Young drive up Main Street, and when he heard the approached of the train he remarked to a friend with him that he was sure the accident would happen. Mr. Young's horse was waling as he approached the crossing. Mr. Matthew Ballantyne was called upon as a witness. He was at the Power House at the time. He did not see the accident, however, although he noticed that the train had slowed up, He did not see Mr. Young drive up the street. A number of C.P.R. officials were examine and gave technical evidence the most vital of which appeared to be the difficulty of seeing a train on account of the flour mill obstructing the view. The width of the road on the north side of the railway is 53? feet on the south side 56 feet while the width of the C.P.R. crossing is about 70 feet. The jury was as follows: Messrs. John Blakeley, foreman, A. Johnston, Wm. Carnochan, Frank Murray, Robt. Needham, Samuel Davis, George Bradford, Walter Lockhart, Ed. Nicholson and Sidney McLean. They brought in a verdict of accidental death, recommending that improvements be effected in order to give a better view of the crossing an approaches. Rev. J.H. Rutherford of the Cameronian church conducted the funeral services in the absence of Rev. J.I. McCrea. The deceased is survived by two brothers and one sister; Robert Young, of Ottawa; Andrew Young and Mrs John McFarlane of Almonte. Four brothers, Alexander, William, Peter and Stephen, and three sisters, Mrs Angus Sutherland, Mrs John McCarter and Mrs Henry Cavers predeceased him. Although he had not been in robust health for some years Mr. Young's sudden illness and death came at a great surprise and shock to his many friends. He had a long and successful business career in conjunction with his brother, Robert who is now a resident of Ottawa. Together they established a foundry and machine shop business in Almonte which became widely known as the Mississippi Iron Works. They employed a large staff and built up a flourishing industry. In particular they catered to the farm trade, and their ploughs and other agricultural implements were noted for their excellence. There was a family eleven children, seven sons and four daughters, only two of whom now survive, his sister, Mrs John MacFarlane, of Almonte, and his brother Robert, of Ottawa. In 1882 he was married to Miss Alice June Glover, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Glover, of Bennies Corners and Almonte. The marriage took place at the bride's home in Almonte and the officiating minister was the late Rev. J.H. Edmondson. To this union was born three sons and one daughter, Russell, of Philadelphia; Morton, who died in 1911; Etta, Mrs E.H. Knight, of Ottawa, and Vincent, of Toronto. The untimely death of his son Morton, who was a very promising student at Toronto University, when he passed away in his 21st year, was a severe blow. ?b?Highly Esteemed Lady Of Almonte
?/b?Mrs John MacFarlane was Member of Well Known Family of Bennies Corners
Mrs John MacFarlane, one of the best known and most highly esteemed ladies of Almonte, died on Friday at her home on Church street. She was 73 years of age. She was a native of Bennies Corners. Her maiden name was Janet Young, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Peter Young. There were eleven in the family and all of them have passed away except her brother, Mr Robert Young, of Ottawa. She had four sisters: Mrs John McCarter, Mrs Angus Sutherland, and Mrs Henry Cavers. The brothers who are deceased were: Alexander, William, John, Peter, Andrew and Stephen. Forty-six years ago she was married to Mr John MacFarlane and she lived on the MacFarlane homestead with her husband until 27 years ago when they moved into Almonte to their home of Church street. The old MacFarlane homestead in now occupied by Mr James Turner. Mrs MacFarlane was a most charming woman. She had a delightful disposition and her home was noted for its hospitality. Besides her husband she leaves two daughters to mourn her loss: Jean, Mrs George Buckham, Duncan, B.C., and Mamie, Mrs S.R. Finlayson, Pembroke. There was a very large assembly of relatives and friends at the funeral on Monday. The service was conducted by Rev W.H. McCracken, of St John's Presbyterian Church, and many floral tributes adorned the casket. The pallbearers were all nephews: Messrs M.R. Young, Angus Sutherland, Peter Sutherland, Herbert Young, E.H. Knight and M.R. MacFarlane. Friends from out of town included: Mr and Mrs Robert Young, Mr and Mrs E.H. Knight, Mr Andrew Young, Dr and Mrs O.H. Spratt, Mrs Thos Urquhart, Mr A.K. McLean, and Miss Margaret MacFarlane, all of Ottawa; Col E.J. Mackie and many other friends from Pembroke; Mr William Baird, Carleton Place. Rev Mr McCracken said in part: "I want to hold up before you the life sized portrait of a good woman, as it is sketched for us by the pen of Solomon, believing that you will see in this picture a striking likeness of Mrs MacFarlane, an ideal to which any young woman would to well aspire, a woman of which any man could be justly proud, a mother whose children will rise up and called blessed. "The inspired writer says four things of this good woman all of which can be said of our departed sister. She was industrious. As a result of her work a home is purchased, a vineyard is bought, is not this beautiful home in which we are met today the product of a woman's toil as much as the reward of a man's industry? Such homes make a man independent of the grog shop, the club, or the street corner. ? the seat of the scorner, Mrs MacFarlane loved her household tasks, refusing to be idle, even when strength was failing. She died practically in harness. "She had the characteristic of 'hospitality.' While these neighbours could tell you of the unnumbered act of kindness and love, done by this best of women in the most unostentatious way, through all the year of her devoted life, so that we hear on every hand such testimonies as these 'The best woman in Canada.' 'There is only one Aunt Janet,' others could tell you of the wonderful home in which she was reared, where the heartiest welcome always awaited you, a home where friends always met on the great holidays of the year, and where worshippers could always get a good meal on the Sabbath. I would like to add my own word and bear my own testimony to many kind acts and loving deeds. "This good woman was faithful to her marriage vows. for well nigh half century had our lamented friend fulfilled the good opinion which must have been held of her, when she came to her husband's home, encircled with the glamour of early love. With kindness, fortitude and dignity had she ministered to the needs of husband and daughters, making the home a place of contentment, a haven of rest. "She was a pious women. She loved her Church and was always willing to help in any way towards her prosperity. She was not among the company of those who forsake the assembling of themselves together. It was with a feeling of real home sickness did she pine to be in her solemn assemblies and take her part in the praise Service of the House of God. Especially did she covet a place at our last Communion Service. "Looking back upon a long useful life of health and happiness, she could say with the Psalmist, 'Surely Goodness and Mercy have followed me all the days of my life.' With good faith she could also look forward to the future and say, 'I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever'."

    Obit. -- Mr McCarter
Very genuine indeed was the regret universally expressed in town last Thursday night when it was announced that Dr James McCarter had passed away in Kingston that afternoon. On Monday of last week he was operated on for appendicitis and was apparently progressing towards recovery when paralysis of the bowels set in on Thursday and caused his death. James Mostyn McCarter was born in Almonte thirty-seven years ago, being a son of the late John McCarter, for many years principal of the public schools. He was educated at the Almonte high schools and graduated in medicine from Toronto University. He subsequently located at Verona near Kingston about ten years ago and here, through his acquired skill and natural congeniality, he had built up a large practice and was one of the most popular and best known men in a large district. Last May he was united in marriage with Miss Asseltine of Verona and he had just completed the erection of a handsome home in that town. These two last facts make his demise peculiarly sad. Besides his wife he is survived by five brothers and four sisters -- Alex and Peter in the Yukon; William in Vancouver; Jack in Toronto; Robt in the United States; Mrs Masson Hilsboro, Mass; Mrs Eastwood of Peterboro; Mrs Flanagan and Miss Agnes of Bassano, Alta. The body was brought to Almonte and on Sunday interment was made in the family plot in the eighth line cemetery, the funeral being from the home of Mr Robert Young. The funeral was unusually large, on account of the sincere sympathy which generally prevailed over the untimely death of one who had grown to manhood in Almonte.

Last Tribute is Paid to Peter A.E. Young
Almonte lost another of its elderly residents who retired from business a few years ago, in the sudden death of Peter A.E. Young on Sunday, following a heavy stoke that befell him during the night. Mr Young was in his 80th year and had been about as usual to the end. Although he sold out his interests in the planing mill business he conducted so long, in January of 1947, he continued to do work for his successor, Mr. H.R. Davey, local building contractor. For several hours a day this remarkable man glazed sashes in the plant he had conducted so long before disposing of it. Mr Davey states that on the Thursday before his death he did 30 of them. Peter Young was born in Almonte a son of the late Peter C. Young and his wife, Annie Anderson. He received his education in Almonte and at an early age entered the planing mill conducted by his father. On the death of the latter he carried on and for years was associated in the business with his brother Herbert who predeceased him a few years ago. Mr Young was a member of Bethany United church. He was an elder and there were few Sundays during his long lifetime that did not see him in his pew. A good businessman, tradesman and above all a most honourable person to deal with, Mr Young commanded the respect of all who knew him. His wife, the former Sarah Ann Giles of Blakeney predeceased him in 1941. He leaves one son, R. Ernest Young, of Danville, Que. Surviving are one sister and two brothers, namely, Mrs Geo. Etherington (Jessie) of Almonte; J. Howard of Ottawa and William of Almonte. Robert and Herbert passed away some years ago. The funeral was held from the family residence on Cameron Street, Tuesday afternoon, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. H.C. Wolfraim, pastor of Bethany Church. Obit. ? Morton Young
Much anxiety was caused by word received on Friday last by Mr Andrew Young stating that his son Morton, was ill at Toronto, where he was attending the School of Practical Science. Mr and Mrs Young at once left for the city, and when they reached there found that an operation had been performed by Dr Starr for appendicitis and that there was other serious affections of the bowels which rendered recovery somewhat uncertain. Every care and attention were given but dreaded complications developed and on Wednesday morning the disease had done its work, and death came.

Though not unexpected here, the sad word came as a severe shock, not only to the relatives but to many others who appreciated the worth of the young man just entering the portals of real life, and with the ability, energy and stability to make that life a success. Mr and Mrs Young returned home on Thursday morning, bringing the remains with them and the funeral will take place from the home on Church street to the eighth line cemetery on Friday afternoon at half-past two o'clock. Andrew Morton Young was the second son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Young, and was twenty years of age. He was a young man possessed of a mechanical mind far beyond the average, and it was natural that after graduation from high school here he should turn his attention to work of that character. He spent some time in the foundry here, then in the Canada General Electric Works at Peterboro, and at the time of his death he was taking a course of study at the School of Practical Science at Toronto. Mr Russell Young, a brother of the deceased, is at Vancouver, B.C., and Miss Etta and Master Vincent are at home. Much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs Young and the family in the deep shade of sorrow that has so suddenly overspread their home.

    A Sudden Call
The sad news was flashed over the wires from Batavia, Ill., on Saturday night to friends here of the death of Lillian, the only daughter of Mr and Mrs David Sutherland. The only particulars given were that brain trouble was the cause of death, and that the funeral would take place on Tuesday afternoon. The end must have come very suddenly as a letter written on Thursday stated that though she had not been as well as usual she was at school that day. Mrs McDonald, (Mrs Sutherland's mother) and Messrs Peter and Alex left by the Sunday night train for Batavia. Little Lillian, was a bright and winsome child of a disposition so loveable that though only a child of tender years she had won her way into many a heart that will be saddened to learn of her death.
