Another home circle was broken on Monday when the grim messenger of death summoned the spirit of Mrs. James Foster, of Galbraith, to leave this earthly tenement. Deceased was a daughter (Margaret) of the late James Scoular, and was born in the township of Lanark fifty years ago. She leaves a husband and three sons to mourn her loss. The funeral services were conducted at her home by Rev. W.S. Smith, and the funeral cortege then proceeded to the Middleville cemetery, where the earthly tabernacle was laid at rest.

The Late James Schoular
About three weeks ago, Mr James Schoular was taken to the R.M. hospital suffering from typhoid fever, and despite the best medical and nursing care, succumbed to the ravages of that disease, his spirit passing to the Great Beyond early last Friday morning. The late Mr Schoular was in his fifty-sixth year and was born in Darling township in May 1863, and was a son of the late Robert Schoular, and his home there until going to Arnprior about twenty-two years ago. Two years ago he and his family came to Almonte, where they since lived. Twenty-eight years ago he was married to Margaret McKay, daughter of the late William McKay of Lanark, and to them seven children were born, one dying in infancy. Mourning the loss of a loving husband and father are his widow, three sons and three daughters, William overseas, Misses Mary, Lizzie, Della and Alex and James of Almonte. Two sisters are also living -- Mrs Jas Foster, Galbraith, and Mrs Thos Culbertson, Deloraine, Man. The funeral on Sunday afternoon was largely attended, and the services at the home and grave were conducted by Rev S.G. Brown, The pallbearers, all of whom were boyhood friends of the deceased, were Messrs James Schoular, James Rintoul, William Rintoul, Thomas King, Daniel Foy, of Darling, and James Schoular of Ramsay. Among the many floral offerings were a pillow from the family, sprays from Mrs Hederson ad Mrs Bothwell, and Atthewell Rebekah Lodge.

There passed to rest on Thursday, Jan. 15th, a respected resident of the neighbourhood in the person of Mrs. James Foster. Born in Darling Township. a daughter cf the late Robert Scoular and his wife Mary Rintoul. She was in her 71st year and the last surviving member of the family. Her husband predeceased her in November. 1926. She is survived by nine children and 24 grandchildren, namely Mary, Mrs. Vadboncoeur of U.S.A.; Rebecca, Mrs. Harold Munro; Margaret, Mrs. Gilbert Munro; Jessie. Mrs. John Munro of Clayton; Miss Flossie J. of Almonte; Roy R. of Cut Knife, Sask.; Ernest, Irvine and Thomas of Clayton. The funeral was held from the home of her son, Ernest, to Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. William G. Rintoul, for twenty years treasurer of Darling Township of Darling and one of its most respected residents, died on Monday after an illness of only a few days of pneumonia. He was 53 years of age. A native, of the township he was married twenty-six years ago to Miss Janet Gunn, daughter of Mr. George Gunn. To them were born a fam-ily of four sons and five daughters; Arnold, Jean, Margaret, George, Alex, Mary, Isobel and Daniel. One brother, Daniel, resides at Kemptville. Three sisters also survive; Mrs. John Bulloch, Sinclair Station, Man.; Mrs. Stewart Bulloch, Reston, Man.; and Mrs. Alex McKay, Almonte, The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from his late residence in Darling and interment took place in Middleville Cemetery. Rev. Henry Scott of Watson's Corners, conducted the service. The late Mr. Rintoul was an active worker in municipal and church affairs, and he will be greatly missed by a wide circle of friends.

Robert McKay
Robert Welland McKay died Dec 4, 1980 at the Almonte Nursing Home. Welland was the son of the late Thomas McKay and his wife Annie Rintoul. He was born in Lanark Township September 16, 1884. He received his education at Hall's Mills School, and Attended the Presbyterian Church in Middleville. On Wednesday May 4, 1910 Robert Welland McKay married the late Nellie Mabel Rodger daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J.H. Rodger of Middleville. The Rev A.D. Fraser officiated. Mr and Mrs McKay lived on their 300-acre farm across the road from his father's farm on the 7th line of Lanark, until March 1929 when they moved to the farm in Ramsay township. They retired in March 1952 and lived on St George Street, Almonte. After the death of his wife in February 21, 1961, his late brother Charles McKay came to live with him until May 24, 1974. Welland then moved to the Cowan Nursing, until November 17, 1976, when he moved to the Wilmart Nursing Home. On July 13, 1980 he came to reside in the new Almonte Nursing Home until his death. Welland was a faithful member of St John's Presbyterian Church, Almonte. He leaves a son, James Alexander McKay of Almonte, Ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. His oldest son, Thomas Wilbert McKay, died ten years ago, also his four brothers, and four sisters are deceased, namely John, Alexander, Thomas, and Charles McKay, sisters Margaret (Mrs J.R. Reid); Esther (Mrs Wm Mealy); Mary Ann (Mrs John Robertson) and Hattie (Mrs J.M. Rodger). The funeral was held on Saturday December 6 at 2:30 from the Gamble & Comba Funeral Home, 127 Church Street, thence to the Auld Kirk Cemetery for burial. Rev Edward Smith of St John's Presbyterian Church conducted the service. The pallbearers were his grandson's George Welland, Harold Thomas, Arthur Clare, Ronald Thomas, and John Robert McKay and Anthony Kennedy.

The death of Mrs Harriett (Hattie) Rodger occurred at the Drynan Nursing Home, Almonte, on Tuesday December 5th, in her 82nd year. She had been a resident of the nursing home for ten years. Previously Mrs Rodger resided on Country street. Mrs Rodger was born at Hall's Mills on October 5th, 1886, a daughter of Thomas McKay and Annie Rintoul. She was married in March, 1908, at Middleville, to the late James M. Rodger. She was a member of Almonte Presbyterian Church. Surviving are one son, Roy, and a daughter, Annie, Mrs David Andrews, both of Almonte; two brothers, Welland and Charles McKay, and two sisters, Mrs John R. Reid and Mrs William Mealy of Brandon, Manitoba. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, Church street, at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 8th, with burial at Auld Kirk Cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev William Baird of Almonte Presbyterian Church. Pallbearers were Lloyd Watson, Lester Jamieson, James Rodger, Wilbert McKay, Garnet Rodger and Robert Andrews.

The death occurred in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, Almonte on Tuesday, Aug. 30th of Mrs. Joseph (Margaret Jennett Munro) H. Symington following a short illness. She was 81. Born in Darling Township, she received her education there and in 1903 married Joseph H. Symington, a Ramsay Township farmer and former Reeve of Ramsay. Mrs. Symington was an active church worker in St. Paul's Anglican Church. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary and the Ladies' Guild. Besides her husband, she leaves three sons and two daughters, Milton and Alex of Arnprior; Chas. of Almonte; Mrs. Everton McIntyre of Saskatoon; Mrs. Cecil Mclntyre of Almonte, also one brother, Alex Munro of Galbraith, 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The body was at the Kerry-Scott Funeral Home until Friday when the funeral service was conducted at St. Paul's Anglican Church by Rev. Canon J. W. R. Meakin. Interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. Allan, Donald, Claire and Wayne Symington, William Dean and Lorne Bretzlaff.

? The death of the late Mrs James Stewart, on Wednesday last, removes one who will be sadly missed, both in the home and the church. Mrs Stewart was the second daughter of Mr and Mrs Daniel Munroe of Clayton, and leaves to mourn her loss, her husband and four little boys, the youngest about fourteen months old. Besides these are the parents, Mr and Mrs Daniel Munroe, and six brothers and one sister ? John of Lanark, Margaret (Mrs A. McNeil) of Naseby, Sask, Hugh of Hopetown, David of Clayton, Wm of Darling, Robert on the homestead, Lanark, and Charles of Clayton. The funeral on Saturday was the largest seen here for some time. The service was conducted at the house and vault by Rev Mr Merrilees, pastor of the deceased. The remains were placed in the vault, The six brothers acted as pallbearers. The sympathy of the whole community goes out to the bereaved ones their sore trial.

One of the largest funerals to be held in the United Church for many years was that of Mrs. Ross Craig who died on Thursday, March 17 at the Shail Nursing Home, following 26 years of ill health. She was in her 55th year. Born on a farm on the Clayton Road, Ramsay Township in 1905, Annie May Reid was a daughter of the late John R. Reid and his wife, Margaret McKay of Middleville. She was educated at the rural school, Almonte High School and in 1925 graduated from Kemptville Agricultural School. In 1926 she married Mr. Allan Ross Craig, one of the well known farmers of this district and went to live with him on the 11th line of Ramsay. In addition to her husband she is survived by her mother who has lived in Almonte for a good many years, and by three daughters: Dorothy (Mrs. Lyle Reid) Almonte; Jean (Mrs. Keith Willows) Innisville and Miss Lois, in Ottawa. There are also two sisters, Mrs. Raymond Kemp and Mrs. Stuart Whyte of Ramsayville; two grandchildren, Shirley and Barry Willows. One brother, Robert, died in childhood. Mrs. Craig was stricken with an illness 26 years ago that eventually made her an invalid confined to a wheel chair. She spent the last three years of her life in a nursing home. But in spite of being confined to her home and the pain she suffered she was always remarkably bright and cheerful; so much so that people enjoyed visiting her.

The body rested at the Kerry-Scott Funeral Home, Elgin Street until 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon when it was removed to the United Church which is located just across the street. The pastor, Rev. J. Ray Anderson, conducted a service in which he spoke words of comfort to the mourners basing his remarks on passages from the Bible, particularly from Job and the Apostle Paul. There was almost a full choir and the flowers around the altar rail were very beautiful. Hymns sung were "What a Friend we have in Jesus," and "Abide With Me." Pallbearers were three nephews, Messrs; John Whyte, Donald Kemp and Wilfred Neilson and Messrs; Morden Duncan, Arthur MacNicol and Eric Munro. Honorary Pallbearers were members of the session of the church of which Mr. Craig had long been a member. Among the many tributes were flowers from the Bank of Canada, Ottawa; Carleton Place Public School Board; the neighbors and Circle NO. 3 Almonte United W.A.; and in lieu of flowers, donations were given to the British and Foreign Bible Society from the session of Almonte United Church; W. A. of Boyd's United Church and Mr. And Mrs. Arthur McNichol in memory of the deceased. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery

Thomas Wilbert McKay
The sudden death of Thomas Wilbert McKay, occurred at his home, St George St., Almonte, on Saturday morning, October 17th, at the age of 59. Born at Middleville on July 21, 1911, he was the eldest son of Welland McKay and the late Nellie Rodger. He received his education at Middleville. Later moving to Ramsay, where he farmed, besides being Stationary Engineer at the Almonte Dairy, No 1 Mill, and for the last ten years was employed at the Collie Woollen Mill, Appleton. On September 30, 1936, in St George Church, Clayton, the late Mr McKay was married to Marjorie Poole, who survives his loss with three sons, George and Harold of Ottawa, and Arthur at home. Two daughters-in-law, Margaret and Janis, and a darling granddaughter, Krista Margaret, all of Ottawa. His father, one brother James and his uncle, Charlie McKay of Almonte, also survive. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 20. Burial was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Service was conducted by Rev L. Hughes of Arnprior. Honourary pallbearers were Messrs John Sutherland, M.R. Thompson, N.T. Sadler, Earle Currie, Ralph Sinnett, John Waddell and W.A. Metcalfe. Active pallbearers were Messrs Earl Cowan, John Mann, Don Thurston, Gordon Weir, Delmer Paterson and Ernest Giles. Flower-bearers were Ray Cowan, Bob Sadler, Ronnie McKay and Karl Mann.

Annie Andrews died March 3 in the Almonte General Hospital following a six week illness. She was 82. She was born Annie Rodger in Galbraith Jan 29, 1910 daughter to the late James Rodger and the late Harriet McKay, both of Galbraith. She married the late David Andrews Nov 5, 1930 in Almonte. Mrs Andrews lived in this area for 65 years. She is survived by sons Raymond of Kingston and Don of Oshawa. She is also survived by their wives Shirley and Eileen, and grandchildren Cindy, Patti and Stanley of Kingston and Robbie of Oshawa, and great-grandchildren Lance, Shawntell and Jessica also of Kingston. She was predeceased by sister Ella Andrews and brother Thomas (Mac) Rodger. The funeral was led by Rev Bob Hill at the C.R. Gamble Funeral Home chapel March 5 at 2 p.m. Burial will take place at the Auld Kirk cemetery.

Well-Known fiddler dies at Fairview Manor May 8

Long-time Ottawa Valley entertainer Milton Symington died May 8 at Fairview Manor. He was 92.

After a long career as fiddle player, Mr. Symington moved into Fairview Manor in Almonte last September. He continued to play with the band, Milton Symington and Friends at local venues, including the Manor and Country Haven.

Mr. Symington lived with his wife Annie in Ramsay township until 1953, when they moved to the Arnprior area. They raised six children and Annie , who died in 1887, attended as many of her husband's concerts as she could.

Mr symington headed the Renfrew County fiddler's Association, sang in the Almonte United church choir and volunteered with the Oddfellows and the Masons. He also called square dances.

"I wonder now how I found the time." Mr. Symington said in an interview last September. "Many's a night I didn't have time to sit down to supper."

Mr symington is survived by sisters Mary McIntyre of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Evelyn McIntyre of Almonte, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is the father of Helen (Bill) Dean, Kay (Jim) Kilburn, Doreen (Garnie) Zeibarth, Ron (Denise) and father-in-law of Barbara symington and Merlyn Zeibarth.

He was predeceased by son Allan and daughter Eileen Zeibarth, as well as brothers Alex and Charlie.

After a private family funeral on May 10, interment took place at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Glenn, Dale and Barry Dean, Dwayne and Greg Zeibarth, and Jason Symington were pallbearers.

Mary Ann McIntyre (nee Symington) January 10, 1909 June 28, 2011 Mary Ann McIntyre (nee Symington), passed away peacefully Tuesday June 28, 2011 at Saskatoon, Sask. aged 102 years. Survived by daughter Margaret Phillips, four grandchildren (Glenn, Kimberly, Laurie Sutherland; Mark Phillips) and two great-grandchildren (Naim, Hannah Sutherland), four nephews (Allan and Dave Brown; Edward and Charles McIntyre), and three nieces Joyce Bergman, Darlene Peterson, Wilma Chapman and Gail Colbourne and other nieces and nephews much loved in Ontario. Pre-deceased by husband Everton McIntyre, daughter Evelyn (Sutherland), brothers Milton, Charles, Alexander, and sister Evelyn, nephews Jack, Gordon, George Brown and nieces Eileen Fouhse (Brown). Born 1909 on a farm in Almonte, Ontario, Mary was raised with two home boys who went off to fight in WW1, and she also knew as a child a survivor of the Titanic. Although she loved school, especially algebra, Mary only completed Grade 10, at which point she had to stay home to help her mother. She obtained her Licentiate in Piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music in 1928. Before her marriage to Everton in 1930 she played at dances throughout the Ottawa Valley with her brothers as the Symington Orchestra, stalwartly driving all of them home in the wee hours in a model T Ford. Upon moving west in 1930, she and Everton raised their family and farmed near Langham, Sask. until 1974. One of her first tasks upon arrival in Langham was to feed the road crew that was building the Yellowhead Highway and the Borden Bridge. Her legendary cooking from her large kitchen garden and loving manner made her a main stay in the District, where she boarded the teacher (supporting, among others, William Perehudoff to get his education), fed threshing gangs and kept several members of Everton's large family during the Depression. During many years living in Saskatoon, she was an energetic center of social and family events, sports, and an inexhaustible source of garden blossoms, food, and laughter for friends and neighbors. Since 1995 she lived at Prairie Springs Care Home, where the laughter continued to the end. Besides her love of plants and birds, family and friends near and far were the centre of Mary's life, and she remained keenly interested in their wellbeing all of her life. She leaves behind a very large legacy of love, light and grace in those who knew her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Prairie Springs Care Home, Saskatoon. The Funeral Service will be held Saturday, July 2, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home. George Daniel Stewart, a resident of Ramsay township, died at Almonte General Hospital of Jan 11, 1983 after a lengthy illness. He was 75. The death of Ila Mae Elizabeth Munro, widow of the late George Jones, occurred at the Civic Hospital, Ottawa, on Saturday, October 2nd, following a severe stroke. She was 65. Mrs Jones was born at Clayton on February 2nd, 1911, a daughter of the late David Munro and his wife, Edith E. Thompson. She received her education at Clayton schools and Almonte High School. She was a member of Almonte Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the choir. Her chief hobby was music and at one time she played the organ at the Baptist Church. On December 8th, 1943, she was married at Almonte United Church to the late George W. Jones. She is survived by a step-son, Kenneth Jones, O Kemos, Michigan, and a step-daughters, Gladys (Mrs Edgar Wilson), Ottawa; Phyllis (Mrs Ted Boal), Lively, Ontario and Vivian (Mrs Al Harrington) of Richmond. Also surviving are a brother, Raymond Munro, Toronto, and two sisters, Kathleen (Mrs Gordon Thom), Almonte, and Lottie (Mrs Wilbert Belford), Pakenham. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Almonte, on Monday, October 4, at 2 p.m. with Rev Paul Rumball officiating, assisted by Rev Smith, a former pastor of the Baptist Church. Burial was made at Auld Kirk Cemetery.

Ila married George Whitehorn Jones in 1943. George was born in 1889 in Woolston, Southampton Unitary Authority, Hampshire, England; died on 25 Apr 1962 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
