Word reached Almonte last Thursday that Mr John Neilson, of Pakenham, and formerly of Ramsay, had died suddenly that morning at the house of his daughter, Mrs McLean, of the Village of Pakenham, whither he had walked from his own house on the Arnprior Road, about a mile. He complained on arriving of not feeling well, and Mr McLean, seeing that he was in pain, got him to lie down, and fetched a doctor, but by the time the latter arrived Mr Neilson was feeling better. The Dr however, advised him to keep himself quiet, and he would write out a perscription, and the deceased asked him, to add the instructions for taking it also, as his memory was getting bad. The Dr seated himself at the table and commenced writing, but shortly after turning around to speak to his patient, when he found that he had ceased to breathe. The deceased was the brother of Messrs Matthew and James Neilson, of the 11th line of Ramsay, and was related by marriage to many of the residents of that neighbourhood, who heard of his sudden end with deep regret. Mr Neilson up to about two or three years ago lived on the town line between Ramsay and Huntley, and then he sold his place and went to live in Pakenham to be near his daughter. the deceased was well known as a great reader and a man of more than ordinary intelligence, profiting by what he read. To a very large number of friends who highly respected him, the intelligence of his death was a source of great grief, and all beat testimony to the virtues of the deceased.

    Very Sudden Death
    Mr James Neilson of Ramsay,
Expires Almost Without Warning on Monday

? short sketch of His Life.
The people of Almonte and the surrounding country were greatly shocked on Monday morning last to learn that Mr James Neilson, one of Ramsay's most respected farmers had died suddenly of neuralgia of the heart. Mr Neilson was in his usual health till Christmas Day. On that day, after going home from church, he was taken slightly ill, but recovered to a great extent, and nothing serious was feared, During the week following Mr Neilson did not feel quite well, but on the morning on which he died he ate a hearty breakfast and felt better than he had done for some days. Between ten and eleven o'clock he felt a sharp pain in the region of the heart, and died inside of two or three minutes. The late Mr Neilson was a man of sterling character, and enjoyed the esteem of the whole community. He was an elder in St. Andrew's church, and was an exemplary Christian all his life, and his family have the consolation of knowing that the dread summons, though it came suddenly did not find him unprepared. Mr Neilson was a thrifty and progressive farmer. He was a strong Liberal in politics, a man of good natural abilities, and well informed, but was of too quiet and retiring a disposition to ever accept any public position. He was born in Paisley, Scotland, May 15th, 1820. He came to Canada in 1821 with his father, the late John Neilson, who settled on the 12th line of Ramsay immediately after coming to this country. The deceased lived for 52 years on the old homestead and the balance of his life on the farm on which he died, and which he purchased several years ago from Mr Robert Bryson, of Almonte. In 1845 Mr Neilson was married to Miss Marion McFarlane, who survives him. Mr and Mrs Neilson had nine children, and all but one are still living, vis: Mrs David Forgie (Marion), of Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs (Rev) J. Wilkie (Agnes), of Indore, Central India; Matthew, C.E., of Calgary; William G., of Beaver, B.C.; and John, Sarah, Mary and Jessie, who are living on the homestead. We tender our deepest sympathy to the widow and family who have been so suddenly bereaved. The funeral took place this (Thursday) afternoon to St. Andrew's church here, thence to the cemetery, and was very largely attended.

    ?b?Mrs Wm Smith?/b?
Mrs Wm Smith, of the 11th line, Ramsay, had been in poor health for several weeks, though able to be about the house at times, and was not thought to be seriously ill, but on Wednesday morning death came and ended a long and useful life. Mrs Smith, who was in her 77th year, was Jean Neilson, daughter of the late John Neilson, and was born on the 12th line of Ramsay, one of a family of nine, of whom only one, Mrs Gavin Hamilton, is now living. The deceased was married to Mr Smith over fifty years ago, and has since lived on the farm upon which she died. The family born to them consisted of five sons, one of whom died in infancy, and three daughters. The daughters are Misses Agnes and Jennie, at home, and Miss Mary, who follows her profession as trained nurse in Ottawa, but who was home and tended her mother in her declining health. The sons who attained manhood are William, who is dead, John at Winnipeg; Robert, at Cornwall, and James, who died a year or two ago. Mrs Smith was of a quiet and retiring disposition, but her kind and motherly nature endeared her to many who bear testimony to her willingness to sacrifice her won comfort and convenience if by doing so she could help a needy friend or neighbour. The funeral takes place on Friday to the eighth line Cemetery. The bereaved family and friends have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.

    Notes:

    Died:
Last Monday Mr Matthew M. Neilson, youngest son of one of the oldest and most respected families in Ramsay, died at his home on the 11th line, at the age of 65. His father, the late Mr John Neilson, was one of the pioneer settlers of Ramsay, coming from Paisley, Scotland. His father ntook up land on the 12th line, and there the late Mr M. Neilson was born and lived until 1881, when he moved to the farm on the 11th line and lived on it till he died. About the year 1872 Mr Neilson purchased a farm from the late Mr Jas Gemmill, having altogether 350 acres. His death is the sixth in a family of four sons and four daughters, the surviving members being Mrs Gavin Hamilton and Mrs William Smith. The late Messrs John and James Neilson were his brothers. His third brother died many years ago in Bellville, where he was a prominent contractor. In the year 1858 he married Emeline Teskey, daughter of the late Mr John Teskey, of Appleton. Mrs Neilson and their three sons and four daughters are all living. The children are John, on the old homestead; George, of the Gemmill farm; Mrs Alexander turner (Annie); Mrs John Thom (Aggie); and Emeline, James and Jennie, on the homeshead. The late Mr Neilson was a man of unblemished character and in his comparatively early death the community has lost one of its best citizens. he was of a very quiet and unassuming disposition, but was more than ordinary intelligent, and took a lively interest in public affairs. For many years he filled the position of school trustee for the Appleton section, and was a member of the Ramsay board of health at the time of his death. The deceased had been ailing for three or four years with a kidney trouble. He was a kind-hearted man, who laboured hard for his children and had the satisfaction of seeing them all well provided for before he died. although death came to Mr Neilson at a comparatively early age, it found him well prepared to face the grim monster, and before dying he called his family to his bedside and expressed the hope to meet them all in the better land. His last words were "remember me." In politics the late Mr Neilson was a pronounced Liberal, and was well posted on the affairs of the country. In religion he was a devout member of the Presbyterian congregation at Appleton, in which he held office for a time as manager. The funeral, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, was very largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev G. T. Bayne, of Ashton and Appleton, and the pall-bearers were Messrs D. Dowling, Thos Cavers, Robt Cavers, J. A. Teskey, William Paul, Jas Turner. The sorrowing ones have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.

    Notes:

    Died:
Businessman (ice cream and chocolate). William Neilson was born near Almonte, Ontario, but left his family's farm to earn a living. Stops in Rochester, Almonte and Toronto proved generally unsuccessful, forcing Neilson to join a brother in North Dakota until he could regain his financial footing. His break came through the production of ice cream in Toronto; first as a sideline to his grocery and then as his primary business in 1893. The firm branched into the production of confectionery in 1908. Chocolate bars followed soon afterward to further diversify the product line. William Neilson suffered a stroke while visiting Almonte in December 1914. A month later he stumbled in the company's Gladstone Ave. factory and, while recovering from that injury, suffered a second stroke, from which he finally succumbed. While William Neilson passed away in Toronto, the firm being his name went from supplying trans-Atlantic luxury liners to being the largest manufacturer of ice cream in the British Empire. The company continues as a dairy operation, having sold the ice cream business in 1990 and the confectionery line in 1996.

The funeral of the late Mrs W. Smith, of Ramsay, took place last Friday afternoon from her husband's residence to the eighth line cemetery. A large procession of friends followed the body to its last resting place, showing the esteem in which the deceased lady was held.

For nearly half-a-century a missionary in India under the Presbyterian Church in Canada, Mrs Agnes Wilson Wilkie, widow of Rev Dr Jno Wilkie, died July 16th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs J.A. Brown, 67 Chaplin Crescent, Toronto, in her 96th year. Following her husband's retirement 15 years ago, Dr and Mrs Wilkie left India to make their home in Canada. Dr Wilkie died on the journey and was buried in the Red Sea. Mrs Wilkie, then 80 years of age, continue her journey to Toronto, where she had lived since with her daughter. Mrs Wilkie was born in Almonte and taught school here for a number of years prior to her marriage to Dr Wilkie who was teaching at the same time in Almonte High School. It was some remark of Rev McKenzie, then Presbyterian minister in Almonte, which caused Dr Wilkie to take up foreign mission work. Following their marriage, Dr. and Mrs Wilkie went at one to India, where they served as pioneer missionaries in Indore and Jhansi. Dr Wilkie, from funds collected by himself, built Indore College now affiliated with Calcutta University, as he believed the best results could be obtained by Christianizing the youth of India. Bible study was a essential part of every student's program. After establishing a great plant at Indore, Dr and Mrs Wilkie went to Jhansi and began educational work there, Boys' and Girls' Boarding Schools were built and an industrial school and Model Farm were established. Massy Harris and Australian plows were shipped out and also other agricultural machinery and farming was carried out, under an expert, on progressive, modern lines. The converts were then placed on these farms. Failing health forced Dr Wilkie's retirement to Canada 15 years ago, but he ever reached his homeland. Since coming to Toronto, Mrs Wilkie has retained her interest in missionary work and corresponded extensively until two years ago, with missionaries all over the world, whom she had met on her journey back and forth. In spite of travelling over most of the world, she loved above all places, her home town Almonte and was heard to say, when she arrived in Canada "Now I shall die happy, because I can be buried in Almonte." It was there she was laid to rest on July 19th in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. She is survived by her sister, Miss Jessie Neilson, Almonte and one son and two daughters, Mrs T. Graham Mitchell, Australia; Rev J. H. Wilkie, Cawnpore, India, and Mrs J.A. Brown, Toronto. Also surviving are two grandsons, Spencer Wilkie in the American Army and Neilson Wilkie in the American Navy; two grand-daughters Janet and Joan Wilkie, Toronto, one grandson Donald Mitchell and a granddaughter Helen Mitchell in Australia. The late Mrs Wilkie had a very charming and gracious personality and made friends easily among all classes of people. In India she was called "The Angel of Jhansi."

    ?b?Death of Mr W.G. Neilson, M.P.P.?/b?

A Busy and Useful Life Ended in its Prime

    ? Biographical Sketch ?
The Funeral a Splendid Tribute to a Popular Young Man
When the GAZETTE went to press last week Mr W.G. Neilson, of Calgary, member for North-East Kootenay in the British Columbia legislature, was lying at the residence of his brother, Mr John Neilson, 11th line Ramsay, Hopelessly ill from oedema of the lungs. He had returned with Mrs Neilson from Montreal on Tuesday, January 3rd, after being in bed for a week with grippe, and during the drive out into the country he caught cold. His condition became so alarming the on Thursday Dr Roddick, of Montreal, was summoned for consultation with the attending physicians. Dr R. arrived by the Soo train at 2:53 on Friday, but two hours earlier Mr Neilson succumbed, to the regret of a host of warm friends, not only here and in the far west, but wherever he was known. Although he had been a resident of the west for the past twelve years, the grief exhibited by the people of Almonte and around his old home in Ramsay at his untimely death was as great as if he had been a continuous resident of these parts. The late Mr Neilson was born in Ramsay in 1862, and was in his 37th year. After attending the Almonte high school for a number of years, he left home in 1881, at the age of 19, and for a year he was engaged as rodman in the engineering department of the construction of the Kingston & Pembroke railway. In the spring of 1882 he went to Winnipeg, and the quick and ready business turn which was one of his strongest characteristics soon secured him an important position ? that of having charge of the forwarding of supplies from Winnipeg to the end of the C.P.R. track. A letter about this time from Mr Burdick contractor, to the late Mr James Neilson (father of deceased), show the high esteem in which he was held by his employers. Mr B. congratulated Mr Neilson on having such a noble son, and says he has unlimited confidence in him and entrust him with all his business secrets. Later on Mr Neilson was given full charge of all the stores in the mountains, amounting at times in value to half-a-million dollars. Mr Neilson remained in the employ of the C.P.R. contractors until connection was made with the Pacific end of the line. In December, 1885, he came east and was married on January 13th, 1886, to Miss Jennie Anderson, of Prospect, Beckwith. In the spring of 1886 he went west again, and had charge of all the supplies, etc., for Ross & McDermott, contractors for the erection of snow-sheds on the C.P.R. line in the Selkirk Mountains. On the completion of this contract in December, Mr Neilson came east again, and took up house in Almonte, where he lived until the spring of 1887, when he received an appointment on the "International Railway of Maine," or what is sometimes called the C.P.R. short line. His work there, as in previous years, was at first connected with supply department, but he afterward had charge of the tracklaying on the Brownville Division. On the completion of the short line in December, 1888, Mr Neilson returned to Almonte, where he remained until the spring of 1889, when he was appointed secretary-treasurer and superintendent of the offices of the Columbia River Lumber Company, with headquarters at Beaver, British Columbia. He was also postmaster at Beaver, and justice of the peace. In 1891 he was appointed manager of the C.R. Lumber Company, with full charge of the whole business. This position he held at the time of his death, and during his term of management the business increased greatly. His employers, Messrs Ross & Mackenzie speak in the highest terms of Mr Neilson. At home, and among his old schoolmates and neighbours, Mr Neilson was always known as a bright, happy, manly, modest fellow ? one of the kind with a ring of the true metal; and as a business man his career was characterized by honesty, trustworthiness and more then ordinary business talent. That the people among whom his lot was cast were not unappreciative of his ability was shown by his election last June as the representative of one of the Kootenays in the legislature, and while here he was anxiously looking forward to his first session in that body, being ambitious to serve his constituents to advantage; but Providence ordained that he should never take his seat there, and he died the very day set apart for the opening of the new legislature, Another mournful reminder of "what shadows we are and what shadows we pursue." ....... The funeral took place on Sunday at 2 p.m. from the homestead in Ramsay to the eighth line cemetery. It was one of the largest ever seen in this neighbourhood, in spit of the disagreeable weather..........We join this whole community in tendering Mrs Neilson and family, the aged mother and the brothers and sisters of the deceased our deepest sympathy in the sad a sudden sorrow through which they have been called to pass.

    A Fine Young Man's Death
After about a year's illness with the trouble known as "pernicious anaemina" Mr John Neilson Hamilton (son of Mr. Gavin Hamilton, reeve of Ramsay) passed peacefully away last Friday afternoon, at the early age of 38 years. The insidious disease of which the deceased died seemed at times to relax its hold upon his system, and during these intervals his friends fondly hoped for his ultimate recovery; but it was a hope which in almost all such cases is doomed to disappointment. The late Mr. Hamilton was of a quiet and retiring disposition, but had endeared himself to all who knew him intimately. Although it was a source of great grief to his friends, death to the deceased was a happy release from human pain and suffering. He leaves a loving wife and two little girls, besides his aged parents, two sisters and two brothers, to all of whom we join sympathizing friends in tendering our sympathy. The funeral on Sunday was an unusually large one, evidencing the high esteem in which both the deceased and his family are held. The funeral services were conducted by Rev A.S. Grant B.D., the deceased's pastor.

John married Annie Kinnaird in 1891. Annie was born on 17 Jan 1864 in Smiths Falls, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 5 Jan 1914 in Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Mr Jas C. Hamilton
The sad news of the death of Mr Jas C. Hamilton, which occurred at Moosejaw, N.W.T., on Sunday last was received by his friends here on Monday morning. Mr Hamilton was the youngest son of the late Gavin Hamilton, of Ramsay, and was well and favourably known in Almonte and the surrounding district. he was for a number of years a clerk with Mr John B. Wylie when he kept store in the stand now occupied by Messrs Timmins & Co, his connection therewith being severed by the necessity for a change on account of failing health. About fourteen years ago he went west and located at Moosejaw, N.W.T., where from the position of clerk he rose to that of manager and then to partner in the firm, which was known as Robertson & Hamilton, the business under his care having grown rapidly. About eleven years ago he was married to Miss Ida Blake, of town, youngest daughter of Mrs H. Blake, and Mrs Hamilton, and one son, Kenneth, aged ten years, are left to mourn his loss. The deceased was not of a rugged physique, but after his removal westward his health was much improved until he was taken, with anaemia, and last year he spent some time in California, where he received much benefit from the change, but unfortunately the disease had not been eradicated and he succumbed to its ravages. The remains are being taken to Ottawa today (Thursday), where they will be placed in a vault to await interment in the spring. Mrs Hamilton and Mr Robertson (Mr Hamilton business partner), who accompanied the remains to Ottawa were joined here by some of the Almonte friends.

    The Late Jas C. Hamilton
The Moosejaw Times of March 10th has the following reference to the death of Mr Jas C. Hamilton:
"Moose Jaw mourns the loss of one of its best known and most highly esteemed citizens. At 4:30 o'clock Sunday morning, Mr James Cochrane Hamilton, of the firm of Robinson & Hamilton, passed peacefully away at his home on Main street. Deceased was a victim of anaemia, from which he suffered much for several years past. Two years ago he was taken very seriously ill, and his death was hourly expected. With great care he managed to pull through and recuperate, and for the past year was able to attend to his business as usual. About the first of the year it could be seen that he was losing ground, and three weeks ago he was compelled to give up his work. The manner in which he always bore up against the ravages of the disease, and his always cheerful disposition, even in his weakness and most trying moments, was remarkable, so much so, that while everyone knew of his illness, few thought that it was so serious and the announcement of his death on Sunday morning came as a surprise. The funeral service was held at family residence at 3.30 p.m. Monday, and the remains were taken to Ottawa on Monday's delayed train, where they will be interred. Mrs Hamilton, and his only son, Master Kenneth, and Mr T.W. Robinson, accompany them. Mr Robinson will return to Moose Jaw at once, but Mrs Hamilton will remain in the east for some weeks. The sympathy of the whole community goes out to the bereaved wife and little son, who are left to mourn his loss. The deceased was a native of Almonte, Ont, where he was born in January, 1867. He was therefore yet a young man of 37 years, but the disease from which he suffered made him look much older. He was educated at the public and grammar school of his native town. He started his business career as apprentice at the age of 17 years, and after several years experience in Brockville, Ont, and in Manitoba, he came to Moose Jaw in 1892 to accept a position as manager for Mr T.W. Robinson. In 1896 Mr Robinson took him into partnership retired from active business, and moved to Toronto, since which time Mr Hamilton had entire charge. Deceased was one of our most public spirited and enterprising citizens and always gave a helping hand to every movement calculated to further the best interest of the community. He served as town councillor, but was unable to complete his last term owing to ill health. He was also an active member of the Board of Trade and, possible, worked energetically to further its interest. He was a staunch supporter of St Andrew's Presbyterian church, of which he was a member, a trustee, and a manager, and he will be greatly missed by the whole congregation."

James married Ida Gertrude Blake on 21 Jun 1893 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Ida was born in 1864 in North Augusta Township, Grenville County, Ontario, Canada; died on 14 Mar 1939 in Moose Jaw, Moose Jaw Census Division, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Moose Jaw, Moose Jaw Census Division, Saskatchewan, Canada. The Late James Smith
Although the friends of Mr Jas Smith, of Ramsay, had seen for some time that he was gradually sinking under the lung trouble from which he had been suffering for the past two years, they were shocked last Saturday when the news reached town that he had passed away that morning. Only the night before he had driven to Appleton and back, unattended by anyone. On his return it was noticed that he was in a very weak state, and the family saw that the end was not very far off; but the vital cord was broken almost ere they fully realized it. Death at any age and under any circumstances is sad and painful to contemplate, but it is a peculiarly sad thing to see a useful young man like Mr Smith cut down in the very prime of his life, he having reached only his thirty-fifth year. But it must be a comfort to the bereaved in all such cases to know that "God doeth all things well," and that
"Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face."
Mr Smith was one of Ramsay township's most intelligent and enterprising young farmers, and was highly respected by all who had the pleasure of being acquainted with him. He took a course in Almonte high school, and brought the education there obtained to bear upon his work on the farm, although he might with profit and honour to himself have chosen a professional calling and done well in it. In politics he was an ardent and active Liberal, and on the public questions of the day he was more than usually well informed. About two years ago he contacted a cold, and, as is too often the case with the young and vigorous, he thought lightly of it and paid no attention to it until that fell enemy of mankind, consumption, had marked him for its own. A long holiday in the Adirondacks was tried, but it was in vain, as the disease had made too great headway. The only previous death in the family was that of the eldest son, Mr William Smith, who died of typhoid fever in 1884, in Arnprior, where he was engage in the hardware business. Both parents survive, the father, Mr Wm Smith, having reached his 88th year. The funeral on Tuesday, notwithstanding that it was a wet day, was a very large one, testifying to the high esteem entertained for the deceased and his family. The funeral services were conducted by Rev Mr Watson, who is at present in charge of St Andrew's church. We join the community in tendering sympathy to the aged parents and their family.

    John W. Neilson
Mrs John Stewart, of Appleton writes as follows to the Gazette:
It seldom falls the lot of your correspondent to chronicle a death which had caused such widespread sorrow and sympathy as that of Mr John W. Neilson, who passed to the "Great Beyond," on Sunday morning at his home in Almonte. Mr Neilson was in his 68th year. He was born, and raised on the farm now occupied by his third son, John B. Neilson. About nineteen years ago he bought from his youngest brother, James, the Elm Dale Farm, now occupied by his second son, William H. Neilson. On that farm he made a real home, until four years ago, when Mrs Neilson failing health caused them to abandon the strenuous life of the farm, and move into Almonte. Since that time his own health had been giving anxiety to his friends. A stroke of paralysis last Monday evening of last week, brought his useful life to a close. He leaves to mourn his passing, besides his wife, five sons, George, William H. and John B. of Ramsay, Gordon of Winnipeg and MacFarlane of Chatham. Two daughters, Laura and Elsie predeceased him. He is also survived by his youngest brother, James, of Toronto, and two sisters, Annie, Mrs Alec Turner, of Ramsay, and Maggie, Mrs Robert Karr of Vancouver. A younger sister, Jean, Mrs Wood, died in Haileybury, some years ago. Mr Neilson was a Presbyterian in religion and a Liberal in politics. He was a prince of good neighbours, absolutely honourable and upright in all his dealings, genial, friendly and hospitable, doing a good deed whenever, and wherever possible. We mourn the passing of a type of man not often met with in this age. The sympathy of this community goes out to Mrs Neilson and family in their great bereavement. Another correspondent of the Gazette writes: "It was very sad to lose John W. Neilson. He was a rare type of man. He had simple, unassuming ways, and neither affectation nor ostentation had any place in his life. He was all genuine. Friendliness and consideration for others were conspicuous traits of his nature. The art of being kind ? the most needed art in all the world ? was the one in which he was most proficient, and many there are who bear witness to his gracious deed of kindness and to his warm sympathy in time of trouble. "When he retired from farming he still kept in close touch with his boys who remained on the farms, and at the same time his two sons who were absent from the home circle were not forgotten, for they found in his numerous letters a faithful chronicle of the doings of the folk at home. He missed sadly his daughter Laura who died in 1902 when she was only 18 years of age. Another daughter died in infancy." The funeral was held from his late residence on Church street, and the large attendance indicated the esteem in which the deceased was held in the community. The floral tributes were numerous and very beautiful. The service was conducted by Rev Edwin Preston of the Presbyterian church. Interment was made at the Aud Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs Robt Woods, George Neilson, John Simpson, William Simpson, Herb Simpson and John Metcalfe. Friends from a distance included Mr and Mrs Wm Scott and Miss Florence Scott, Sault Ste Marie; Mrs Robt Woods, New Liskeard; Mr Geo Neilson, Toronto; Mr and Mrs J. Forgie and Miss Sarah Neilson, Renfrew; also friends from Arnprior, Ottawa and Carleton Place etc.
